I love that page from Superchops. Very true and very inspirational. I'm a huge fan of Howard Roberts. He was one of the greatest guitarists players who have ever lived.

Great advice from HR coz we all go through that, all the time. It turns out (although I was too young to know it at the time), one of the key reasons I became interested in jazz guitar was a track on an LP entitled, "Ten Trumpets and Two Guitars". Someone gave the record to me coz they saw my excitement and they'd lost interest in it (the music is a bit corny, especially these days). The track that hooked me was the last one called, "Two Guitars" and the 2 guitarists are Howard Roberts (L channel) and Al Viola (R channel). sectionHoward Roberts

Gaaark! Looks like stoopid Y/T dropped the rest of my text. Anyway, here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppjCiIWZmLFmpa8 if you're interested. I originally said, it would great if there was a transcription but that that was unlikely. While saying that, I had the outrageous thought that I might be in a position these days to transcribe it myself. OoO The guitar parts don't sound as incomprehensible and unreachable to me now as they did originally.

Jon ... did you ever meet HR?
@jonmaclennan4 жыл бұрын
Wish I could have. I was five when he died so I wasn't playing guitar yet. But one of my previous guitar teachers knew him and actually has his famous "black guitar" I got to play it. It had a lot of mojo!

@@jonmaclennan You took lessons from Wolf Marshall !!! cool.. tell me more about the black guitar ..ok?
@jonmaclennan4 жыл бұрын
Yup! Wolf was the guy who told me about Howard. Wolf told me he actually went to Howard to get lessons and Howard said you should go to George Van Eps. So Wolf did and he actually showed me some lessons he got from George Van Eps. But Howard's guitar was really cool. It was really played in. The neck felt really great, apparently Howard sanded down the neck in the dark or something like that just to get it to feel exactly how he wanted it. It was the guitar he used on Color Him Funky and so many sessions. Wolf bought the guitar from Howard's wife. It's definitely a cool piece of guitar history.
