1905, Maharashtra. Latika gets married into a family where her husband, an open minded person with a new wave of thoughts, passes away a few weeks after marriage. Widowed, Latika is asked to go bald and wear the widow's garb for the rest of her life. Her brother-in-law, Shridhar essays roles of women in the local musical theatre. Latika, who is educated, feels disgusted seeing a 'man' dressed in an attire that is rightfully hers, creating tension in their relationship. However, they get to know each other better through the course of time, eventually falling in love. Full of questions, their relationship stands at a threshold, where there is no going back, and this happens on the auspicious night of Pradosh.

Towards the end of the story, both makes love to each other and story ends with Latika's question to Shridhar next morning - "What's next" which means in marathi "Aata??" It's a question that story teller has ceded to us viewers whether Shridhar will marry Latika which is quite controversial, especially looking at the time period of the story or will he leave her devasted and ends their relationship. Or both of them decides to compromise with the weird situation they have got into and keep loving each other secretly by continuing their love affair hidddn from the world. It's really upto us in what way we wish to end this story. Explanation is for non-marathi people who are having hard time understanding the end of the story. Love. Peace.

कथेला शेवट नाही आहे , दुसरा भाग यावा असे वाटते पण नाही आला तरी चालेल कधी कधी अपुर्णत्वाने काही गोष्टींना पूर्णत्व लाभते , त्या काळात नायकाने नायकीला आशा दाखवल्या म्हणूनच तिने आशेने त्याला आता असा प्रश्न विचारला , येतेच कथा संपली , नायकाचा भांभावलेला चेहरा बरेच काही न बोलता बोलून जातो , विधवा पुनर्विवाह त्याकाळात समाजसुधारकरांनी सुरु केले , पण येथे असे काही होईल अशी अंधुक आशा बाळगणे ह्यापलीकडे आपण काहीही करू शकत नाही , पूर्वी ब्राहमण विधवा महिलांचे गर्भारपण फुले दांपत्यांनी केले असे ऐकिवात होते , कथेचा शेवट पुढील भागात हा प्रेक्षकांनी मानायचा तर सकारत्मक नाहीतर शोकांत असावा गर्भवती राहिल्याने नायीका कदाचित आत्महत्या करू शकते , नायक कालांतराने लग्न करून संसारात रुळू शकतो , अनेक शक्यता आहेत , परंपरा प्रथा समाजाला वळण लावायला असतात त्या जेव्हा समाजाच्या भूलभूत आकांक्षेला वेसण घालायचा प्रयत्न करतात तेव्हा त्यांना तिलांजली देणे योग्य असते, नायीकेने उत्तरेस तीर्थयात्रेस जाण्याचा बहाणा करून येथे मृत्यूची खोटी बतावणी करणे व नायकाने काही कारणास्तव डोक्यात राख घालून घरदार कायमचे सोडणे व मुंबईत येऊन नवीन नांवांनीं लग्न करून आपले वैव्हांहिक जीवन सुरु करावे, दोघांच्याकडे धर्मांतर करण्याचा मार्ग आहे पण आपल्या धर्मात योग्य सुधारणा झाल्यास दुसऱ्या धर्मात कोण कशाला जाईल तस्मात दोन जीवांना आपल्या मर्जीने जगण्याचा अधिकार तत्कालीन समाज देणार नसेल तर त्यांनी आपापल्या तर्हेने जगावे , हि कथा बंगाली किंवा अजून कोणत्या हि भाषेत सहज बनवता येईल येईल व डंबिंग द्वारे इतर भाषिकांना सहज उमजू शकते , संहिता व कथेतील पात्र त्यांची मानसिकता सगळे सशक्तपणे मांडले आहे,

I am a Brahmin but these stupid customs make me feel ashamed. Treat widows with respect and dignity. Give them a second chance to remarry and live a normal life. One of artistic movies with singing and poetry. Very well done.

Kulkarni, such films are set in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you wake up and look around none of these practices exist anymore. Brahmins are perhaps on the forefront of widow remarriages amongst any other communities. So if I were you I'd be proud to be a Brahmin. I'm widowed myself and choose to remain unmarried by choice. If I were younger I would definitely have chosen to get remarried and I can guarantee the majority of suitors would have been youth from the Brahmin community. Other communities unfortunately have not been so open minded yet.

@@user-cp3wc5yj3g hello, I agree that Brahmin community is in the forefront as far as social reforms are concerned. However, it is true only in the urban area. I am surrounded by orthodox Brahmins in a second tier city. A divorcee or a widow can not openly admit and feel unashamed to tell about her in any social activity. I went to US for higher studies in 1972 and had to attend a Xmas party. The woman sitting next to me told straight forward that she was a widow. I have many other issues on the hypocrisy of the Brahmin community here regarding eating non-vegetarian food and taking alcohol. A lot needs to be changed to be open minded. Ours is a still a very closed society.

@@anandkulkarni8313 I don't know what part of India you live in. I'm from rural Karnataka from a very conservative background. Our village has more than 50% orthodox Brahmins, mostly engaged in Pourohitya in temples. I have never had any issues with any person saying what I am. I have travelled to Wai, Nashik, Kashi, Nepal and Manipur for religious matters, nowhere did I face any discrimination. There are of course people who have zero experience about anything trying to convince me to feel like a victim of something. I stay away from such toxic personalities.

Do not understand why the tradition slipped from being so free and flexible in Dwapar Yug to such strict and heartless practices. Perhaps we did not evolve as well as our ancestors did. Such a sad story :( I wonder whether the head of the house would have married off the widow to his younger brother in Dwapar! Or was this a taboo only for the brahmin community in all yugas.
