Prague Walks in 4K / Malá Strana-Nerudová Ulice

Malá Strana (Czech for "Little Side (of the River)" ) or more formally Menší Město pražské (English: Lesser Town of Prague) is a district of the city of Prague, Czech Republic, and one of its most historic neighbourhoods. On this short journey, you will see the side streets of Malá Strana. When you think of Malá Strana, the first thing that comes to mind is St. Nicolas Church and then the narrow streets leading to Prague Castle. You may have passed Nerudová Street (Nerudová Ulice) and Jan Neruda's house ("U Dvou Slunců") on your way to Prague castle. Jan Nepomuk Neruda (9 July 1834 - 22 August 1891) was a Czech journalist, writer, poet and art critic; one of the most prominent representatives of Czech Realism and a member of the "May School".
Jan Neruda was born in Prague, Bohemia; son of a small grocer who lived in the Malá Strana district. Initially, they lived on Újezd Street and later, when he was four, moved to Ostruhová Street (now called Nerudova Street, in his honour), where they owned a house known as “U Dvou Slunců” (At the Two Suns).
The surname Neruda may be reminiscent of Pablo Neruda for many of us, not just a resemblance, but an expression of Pablo Neruda's admiration for Jan Neruda's art, whose real name was "Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto".

🔸The most extensive building of the Baroque Era on Malá Strana is the Wallenstein Palace.
🔸 St. Nicholas Church is one of the finest and the most prominent church in Malá Strana. This is a masterpiece of Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, father and son.
🔸The famous statue of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague is in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Malá Strana.
🔸In 1989, the Prague Embassy of West Germany, in the Palais Lobkowicz, was the site of a drama involving thousands of East German refugees.
🔸The famous Czech novelist Jan Neruda was born, lived in and wrote about Malá Strana; Nerudova Street is named after him.
🔸The Petřín lookout tower is located in Malá Strana.
🔸The Czech composer Bohuslav Jan Martinů lived in an apartment near Kampa Island in the Malá Strana while a conservatory student and a plaque now commemorate his stay.
