My expectations for this Sunday in Warsaw were: 1. In the morning, a Zoom meeting with my family in Sydney . Check. 2. In the afternoon, lunch with friends. Unfortunately, family/work/business made that impossible. 3. In the evening, a new Honest Guide video. Czech.

You let us know what is cool, what is not and how to deal with it. You also keep a strong level of integrity and never sell out. Panská skála is a very good example of columnar Basalt. Basalt is an extrusive rock which is created by a volcanic eruption (can be a gentle eruption). When the lava cools, the joints are formed in a hexagonal form which is a common form and not very rare. Thanks for showing this. I will love to visit this place... Greetings...

I would love to see more episodes of the Czech Republic’s beautiful natural wonders and I’m sure you’re audience would enjoy as much as well. One place you could show is Moravský kras. The true beauty of this place is understated and not often shown outside of CZ. Great job and keep up the good work. Na zdraví!!

This is a wonderful episode, thank you so much! Kamenický Šenov (Steinschönau in German) is actually the Chech partner town of the town I live in, Rheinbach in Germany! After WW II, a lot of glass blowers from Bohemia emigrated to Rheinbach, so this became a town for glass manufacturers as well. There is even a glass making trade school here and a glass museum. Now I am even more motivated to learn some Czech, get in touch with the Kamenický Šenov friendship club here in Rheinbach, and after revisiting Prague coming September, I will make sure to go and visit Rheinbach's partner town and the surrounding area in the North of the Czech Republic! :)

@@schlollepop That is suprising to me, I always thought that "Jugendstil" is the equivalent of "Art Nouveau" in German... I´m also curious about the ethymology of the word "Sezesssion/secese", because it carries some negative connotations. Any thoughts on this topic? :)

The building with the outside made of glass tiles would have been more interesting if it was stightly tinted. Maybe, green like the scales of a lizard. Time for another trip into this area for a second video. Here are some proposals from my side: visit the fancy Motoklub Pekelné Doly (Tip: Best by bike then entrance is free ;-) just around the corner are the Tiské stěny in the same area in summer time a very white beach (I saw this very seldom at a lake) at Hamr na Jezeře welcomes you. Finally a very scenic look araoud from the top of the hill with this (I call it Sputnik) Restaurant, the Ještěd. I assume you know them almost all if not - hurry up these things are worth while to discover and when you can't get enough from fancy stones, the Adršpašské skály (other direction) should be on your list as well. Na zdraví

A bit of casual research shows that basalt columns are probably date to volcanic fissure activity 30m years ago. The fissures were part of the European Cenozoic Rift System - a system of faults that developed as a result of the development of the alps. Basalts are most commonly the results of ocean volcanic activity, but they are also common in rift systems where deep mantle magmas make their way to the surface without too much mixing with continental crust. Basalt fractures like this when thick basalt flows solidify at the surface allowing the interior to cool slowly and fracture in an organized way. The surface layer above them is tyipcally blockier and randomly fractured like the upper layer you can see at Zaltý vrch.

The fate of the Elias Palme factory is indeed very sad. There are thousands of beautiful dilapidated buildings like that in the Czech borderlands (Sudetes). The local German population was expelled after WW2, then communists ruled the country for 40 years. The wounds are still visible all around.
