Also because of the Buddhist concept of Ahimsa which the British ascribed to Ashoka. As a result of this we've had to give up our territories 70 years ago. Historically though, none of the Buddhist, Jain or Ajivaka kings practiced ahimsa. It was meant only for the Bhikshu.

It’s a great delight to watch your podcast, but just a request: if you are reading the comments, please bring some PhD professors in Sanskrit or experts who can elaborate on the matter regarding manuscripts yet to be translated. I believe it will spread awareness among a large section of society who will step up and we may uncover some lost knowledge or lost parts of history from those manuscripts.

Knowledge is what is “known “, thus we must take time to understand what actually happened in the past. Look at the outstanding work done by Nilesh Nilkanth Oak who discovered the technology used by in ancient Indian texts “Ramayan “ and “Mahabharat “. We are now fairly certain abut the time of “Ravan Vadh” and Bhishma’s “Ichcha Mrityu “. Nilesh Oak’s theory is based on the position of stars Jupiter and Arundhati. Arundhati moves around Jupiter in about 28,000 years. The calculations presented by Nilesh bring the accuracy to probably one / two weeks. We must be thankful to Ashoka at least in one sense that he left inscriptions that give us the sense of his thoughts and the technology available in his time.

41:30 in fact, the phrase “the enemy of my enemy…” is attributed to Kautilya. It is from his theory of the Rajamandala in Sanskrit that the phrase travelled to become ‘amicus meus, inimicus inimici mei’ in Latin and then its modern English form in the 19th Century.

54:00 Very true about the so-called Ashoka chakra. In the Vedic idea of kingship, the sovereign is seen as the earthly embodiment of Indra, the king of the heavens. When speaking about Indra Rigveda 1.32.15(2) says "he(Indra), verily, rules, the King of those men who can see, like a felloe of wheel around spokes, {he} became {around} them." The felloe i.e. the rim of the wheel symbolizes the king, and spokes sysmbolize his subjects that he holds together protecting them as well as forming a functional wheel.
