Indeed, although my understanding is that some bacteria for instance can swap traits with their mutated peers. Anti-biotic resistant staphylococcus can do this, and thus give the normal staphylococcus bacteria (extremely common) that may be present in a host a resistance boost. Not a perfect representation, but more accurate than other pathogens perhaps. The nano-virus pathogen scenario also essentially accounts for the mutation mechanic as man-made activations of certain traits as you go.
