Pravus, it isn't a bug. The game automatically houses your new buildings when they are ready. To prevent it you just have to not build houses unless you have more families. Family consist of two different gendered people and their offspring untill they are either 10 or 16 (age when students turn laborers). So don't build more if you have all full, it will split them. And as you can see the split makes no sense :D Also a city hall helps you keep track of the number of families.

I know it's been a while but just in case some people, like me, still watch this and might get help from this : What you say is mostly true, at least it's true with vanilla Banished but in colonial charter it's a bit different. Most couples will stay together even is there are extra houses available except for 2 reasons : One of the parents moves to be closer to his job The actual house is full (stone houses for example can have 5 people at most in them) and the couple wants to have another child. Normally they can't because there's no room but if there is an extra house available the family will split between the 2 houses so the wife can have the extra baby. The couple "stays together" as in they're still a family and will have more babies in the future but at a slower rate than is they were living together. In that sense if you need to grow your population but can't build the bigger houses yet it might be advantageous to have a couple of extra houses as long as they're all close together, that way families won't split to get closer to a job but if the house is full they'll use 2 houses to have more babies. It does make it harder to keep track of families though as you said yourself, until you have the town hall or town arrival that'll give you all numbers. But you won't know who the couples are that are together as you could if they lived together.

17:52 Response about the "bug". As far as I know it isn't a bug, it's part of the original game. When you build houses when no new family can move in, the old ones get separated. When children become students, they seem to be still considered children so they can't marry and have babies 'cause they are no longer considered as "adults". However I remember someone saying to me that the age is about 16-15 to be married if they are students... I'm not sure if that is right though.

One solution to get the families back together is to start a demo of the houses. They'll move out of the "demolished" house, and back to the family house.

The same bug happened with my game of banished. It caused for every adult to die off leaving only the children.I actually had a town filled with children from ages 1-9 yrs old.

Haven't played this in a few years and kind of itching to go at it. Anyway, families splitting is normal even in vanilla. It does slow down the breeding process, I noticed, but doesn't stop it completely. I play with the mod that makes 1 year time actually 1 year age wise, so population growth is even more crucial. In early game, I tend to plan out new houses but build only when really necessary as to not split up moms and dads. I think the wooden houses only has a capacity of 4 so if a couple produces a third offspring, one of the parent will have to move with an existing child. The other reason is their job. When you're low on labourers or have jobs turned on and off, this could displace a working adult as they move closer to their "new" jobs.

I know this is a year late but you can tag a house for destruction so that the residents move out. Banished will then recalculate the couples. 90% of the time is works a 100%

I got the same problem. I "fix" it by start destruct a house and as soon as the family is out you reclaim it. When i did that they moved in with the old family and stayed there. So try that and see if you get the problem fixed.

I've had the male only households show up in the vanilla game, operated with no mods. It's extremely annoying. The other thing I saw a lot of was a much older single adult and young child, or some random aged adult in a house by themselves, and in another house, 3 adults, one "married" couple and a 3rd wheel. The houses were built around the same time, in the presence of a boarding house. So why the mechanics were doing this, I've no idea. I am aware that the comments here are a year old and maybe you figure out the situation next episode. :^D

it's not a bug, it's part of the game, happens when there aren't enough people to pair up of age which when you build the school increases to 16.

Pravus, man. I went 25 years and 50 people. By only telling them to forage wild food. Boarding houses are better, because they hold the temperature better, because of their huge size. If there is 2 boarding houses next to each other, the parents and grown up children get a long better. I built 3 of them, for 3 generations. Hahaha hilarious

You might already know this but you can manually cycle through different models by pressing "f" I think.

In the vanilla game, students could move out and start their own families, although maybe at a later age. (Can't remember the exact number.) Things may have changed in the modpack, of course. But I don't think that explains why a husband would suddenly split from his wife.
