May all beings be happy and have the cause of happiness. May they be free from suffering and the cause of suffering. May they never be parted from happiness without suffering. May they dwell in equanimity without attachment and hatred to those near and far.
Just as you long for happiness, so, too, does every sentient being. Although we no longer recognize them, in some previous life, every sentient being has been our very kind mother, father, or relative. At that time, they showed us enormous kindness. How can we repay that kindness? By rescuing them from the suffering of samsara and placing them on the path to enlightenment. Therefore, we should strive to attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings without exception.
To give rise to a genuine resolve to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings, we must first develop loving kindness. Loving kindness is the wish that every sentient being may be happy and have the cause of happiness. It is like a mother's love for her child, whom she wishes to be happy, healthy, and to have good fortune and success. Based on loving kindness, compassion naturally arises. Compassion is the wish that every sentient being may be free from suffering and the cause of suffering.
From great loving kindness and compassion arises the genuine resolve to seek enlightenment for the sake of all living beings. This resolve to attain enlightenment in order to benefit limitless sentient beings, just as the Buddha Shakyamuni did, is of limitless merit. This is enlightenment thought. It is the Mahayana path - the greatest path - His Holiness the Sakya Trichen
