Location: 18416 N 20th Place - Phoenix
Incident Date/Time: June 20, 2022 - 10:50 AM
Phoenix fire responded to a report of a house explosion on 20th Place in North Phoenix Monday afternoon. Crews arrived and found a garage with the door blown to the other side of the street and a vehicle fully in flames in the center of the garage. Crews stretched a line and quickly attacked the fire. The fire quickly spread to the rest of the structure before fire officials ordered everyone out of the building to go into a defensive fire attack. No one was reported injured according to fire captain and PIO Evan Gammage. Several neighbors said they heard a loud boom prior to seeing the fire and the garage door flying across the street. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I always remember in my home in Ireland, my parents had an absolute military style routine before we went to bed. Every single electric plug was plugged out, gas cooker was checked to make sure it was off and no candles were ever lit and left unattended . When our parents were out socializing, us young - uns made sure that routine was always done, because it was drilled into us.

For those of you commenting regarding the garage door. The timestamp is 7:31 for a wide shot with the garage door laying across the street mangled which both witnesses and the Public information fire official confirmed it was flung to that position following an explosion.

I work in the valley. We had a garage fire last week.. we were probably 30 seconds from our fire taking off like this. It’s all about time. We basically put it out with 750 gallons of tank water before the second engine drought a supply. Nothing wrong with what these guys did. Maybe little kink in the first line. Looks like the second engine hustled interior, got an all clear, tried to put it out. Just need little more time. These light weight sh&t houses do not help

@@pmccoy8924 How do you know no one already completed that task? Why does the camera man need to risk injury when he is not a fire fighter? There was an explosion, no one should be near the home. If you watch the video, upon arrival (fire crew) he is told to stay clear because of this. Also, breaking windows gives oxygen to the fire which can create flash over and/or feed the flames. Glad you're not my hero neighbor.

People making comments on terrible fire fighting have no idea how shitty arizona homes are really built. They are literally pop sickle sticks bone dry with a fuck load of flammable insulation and barely any room to maneuver more than 2 men at a time with a hose. The corridors are narrow and yards are typically the size of a conference room. Saving an arizona home is and will always be a fucking miracle

I"m confused by all the critical comments. Wet stuff on the hot stuff in 2 minutes, good hustle, not a lot of guys standing around wondering what to do next. Not like some of these videos where a bunch of guys stand around and it takes 5 minutes of get a wet hose going. Considering the garage door was flung across the street, I would expect the pressure of that explosion compromised inside walls allowing the fire to spread as it did. Yet so many negative comments. What you think of as "standing around" is not standing around at all. Command gives assignments and for all you know, he could have assigned first due to set a supply and then RIT. Rapid Intervention Team or RIT are firefighters who are on standby in case of an emergency-especially firefighters. Ask any firefighter who have been rescued by RIT and see what they tell you about "standing around." Further, firefighters who appear to be doing nothing can be very misleading. They might be assigned to the hose and could be waiting for the line to charge. They might be getting equipment together such as ladders, chainsaws, or whatever. Another thing about North American firefighters is, they rotate for fatigue or whatever reasons where they go to rehab. American and Canadian fire depts use a lot of resources including apparatuses, manpower, etc. Some other areas use very little resources but might have a crew of 10 whereas others utilize more resources, which is usually dependent on the type of fire. Take London Fire Brigade.. Arguably the best in the world. I was doing a demo of a Partner cut off saw (a lot of firefighters call them K12s) since we sell to fire depts. We were in Seattle on a controlled burn and there were a couple of guys from London and one or two from Germany who all said they weren't expecting much from American firefighters... That was until they did training with Seattle Fire. I was telling the British guys and the Germans that I had just gotten back from Europe and told them how much I loved it there. Then I asked what they thought of Seattle Fire. Every single one of them said the same thing, "we didn't expect much until our first training with a controlled burn." They went onto say how wrong they were to assume that about American and Canadian firefighters. I ask them specifically what it was that changed their minds. They said, "your conditions are much different than ours-for the most part." For example, Seattle is in a seismic zone (D, E, F - the strongest zones according to the building code) and because of this our buildings, including houses, are built differently than the homes in London or Germany, and are even built differently than other houses in America as well. One guy from London was really cool and we talked for about an hour and he was pleasantly surprised at the work we do here and they don't do. He thought vertical ventilation was unnecessary until he went into a wood frame construction which, according to him, was extremely hot with no vision. He was assigned to go on the roof on the next controlled burn and cut vents to allow smoke and heat to escape. He brought up PPV (positive pressure ventilation) and was surprised to learn we have PPV and have for some time, but it didn't work as well as venting. Either way, never underestimate firefighters. Those who are standing around might be relieved by another crew. There are a lot of reasons.

Still incomprehensible that they do not finish the firefighters until they arrive. Here in Europe, this is already done while driving, that is, upon arrival, one is already fully dressed, that is, breathing air, mask... everything is ready. I have seen many videos of US firefighters doing generally a good job but one thing always strikes me is that, without exception, they have to drag out hoses more than they need before the water can pass through. Here the appliances have a hose on a reel which can be deployed quickly while other firefighters run out more and bigger hoses if required.

There are two variants of this, rubber jacketed "booster reel" lines. The classic reel line is not the same as what we see in Europe, the high pressure reel line. Seen some demonstrations on their use, handy indeed. I've worked with these lines, they are more common on apparatus built for the more rural areas, wildland interface. Yes, they deploy and charge crazy fast! In this fire, I can see that the smoke is easily venting through the residential space, look at the roof line. Likely, when that explosion occurred, pressure was sufficient to blow the garage door across the street. I guarantee, the drywall between the garage and the attic space was seriously compromised from the onset. These homes look nice, but those high ceilings and gang nail plate truss structure can be a whole new ballgame once fire gets to the attic and trusses.

"There's no way I could have checked the house." Yes, you could have.The fire was still mainly confined to the garage. Even if you just knocked on the door. Your neighbor might have been lying just inside the door, passed out, and you could have pulled him/her out and saved their life in that case, just by opening the door.. Instead, you were more worried about taking video. And you have the gall to tell the professional firefighters to check the house, which is the first thing they do. You're a pretty sad individual.

You only would have seen the garage door fly if the house was being filmed (or on Ring cameras) at the moment of the explosion. This all took place minutes later. The door is seen later on the street. This is not the movies.

The fire had already extended well Into the attic space before these guys ever arrived. The fire attack plan they used was perfectly fine, until the fire self vented through the roof.

Wow and you assessed this all from a KZbin video? Seems like it would be a statement made by someone who was THERE. Also, please be sure to send this department the book you wrote on fire fighting techniques. Surely you're an expert. Then again, just from the video I can see the power is fed underground, somehow you managed to miss that.

@David-bv3cf
@David-bv3cf 2 жыл бұрын
Who's Lester? Have you ever seen a video of FDNY? Their engineers/chauffeurs wear uniforms/ street clothes generally while driving as well. The driver is responsible for the apparatus, not the fire, unless the whole crew goes in as a backup unit
@kimifan06

? The driver almost always wears street clothes across any American fire department. They drive the rig and man the pumps, no need for turnout gear.
