There's a comment by the person who posted the photo of this obelisk on the Davis-Wiggins cemetery that it was NOT of that cemetery, but she could not remove it from the website for the Davis-Wiggins cemetery. On Ancestry, there's an 1856 tax return in Webster Co., GA for the estate of Richmond Statham, Decd (deceased), that mentioned 3 children under 16, 1142 1/2 acres of 2nd quality land, lot no. 158 in 25th district of Webster Co, GA, valued at $6620. He owned 22 slaves valued at $15,000, with an aggregate value of his entire estate listed as $24,813. No amount of tax owed is listed on this record.

The 1840 Stewart Co., GA, census shows Richmond Statham as being aged 30-40, his wife aged 20-30, 1 dau aged 5-10, & 2 sons under 5 (the 1840 census only lists the head of household, with numbers of family members by age group), 1 daughter age 5-10, & 2 sons under 10. He also owned 14 slaves.

My guess is that the infant was stillborn, and the mother died from complications of giving birth. Unfortunately, that was a risk that every woman faced back then. Very tragic. And I believe that is what happened here. And maybe the husband/father died from grief a short time later. But maybe not. 🤷‍♀️ It does make for a romantic tragedy, though. What do guys think?

@aloysiusdevanderabercrombi470 Neither one of those would cause an infant to be stillborn. The infant might have lived a few hours after birth though. Because they named him on the monument, so they knew it was a boy. But they didn't leave a birth date, just the year of birth and death. So that tells me that he lived less than a day.
