*****IMPORTANT TO NOTE!!!! PLEASE READ!!***** It is perfectly fine if your age does not match the timeline shown in this video. I'm 26 years old and going back to school. I'm pretty starting from the verrrrrry beginning. Based on this timeline, I'm behind 8 years. Please do not let this affect you. Everyone has their own pathway, do not be intimidated by this model. I hope this helps anyone who might be overwhelmed in their current situation - whatever that may be.

Sports med is something that you can go into from many different directions. You can be an orthopedic surgeon and do sports medicine, you can be a family practice doc and do sports med, or even internal medicine. It's very broad. Thanks for the question!

The best thing to do is to open a savings account so you don spend all your FAFSA money, then apply for financial aid from AAMC for the MCAT, try to apply to cheap medical schools (or schools which are tuition free, like a med school in new york), and try to find some sort of tuition help. I'm sure most medical schools get that your poor (Me too girl! 😵😵) and im sure will help you if you ask for financial assistance if youre a good student

This is so much cheaper in European countries like Belgium. Bachelors degrees are just three years, they major in medicine, than the graduate degree is three years, which means they start making money around age 24 normally, without loans of course. It's kind of sad how systems like in US discourage people to get a good education or great career like medicine.

Hi, quick question. I’m getting ready to retire from the military and have left my job to shadow the Chief of Medicine at my base clinic. When examining your flow chart, I realized that there might be limited assistance with pre-med advice. If there is no access to the normal channels, what are my options? Also, I might want to add that I already have an undergrad, basically in basketweaving. While I know that a hard sciences based undergrad is not a requirement, I’m choosing to go after a second, more adequate degree in hopes of crushing the MCAT. In your opinion, am I wasting time and should I just throw together the pre-reqs and wing it? Thanks!

It really doesn't, I've seen some numbers on influence of major, it basically indicates the most unexpected majors are the ones who do best on the MCAT. It's all about skill. In the end I think having enough drive to endure the many years of hard work is what will determine your success as a doctor.

@globisdead
@globisdead 3 жыл бұрын
I would feel more confident in a physician if they trained for 12+ years rather than someone who trained for 7 years. Also, i think the time is generally more coz you have to get a BA or BACC degree first, which I also think is great, coz now you have experienced other courses and are more sure that being a doctor is what you want. If students were to go to med school right out of high school, there would be a lot of drop outs compared to the BA/BACC route.

About 50% of matriculated med students have a biology major, but that's because more biology majors apply than other majors -- only about 30% of biology majors who apply are accepted, whereas 40% of humanities majors who apply are accepted, making less than 20% of the matriculated population (fewer apply). If that didn't make sense, imagine it this way: Say there are 1,000 seats open -- 500 of those seats are bio majors, but 1670 bio people wanted the seats. 200 of the seats are humanities majors, but 500 humanities people wanted the seats. While there are more biology majors in med school than there are humanities majors, more humanities majors who applied got in.

I see this video is years old but maybe somebody is still viewing and can help me figure this out. I'm from Serbia. In our country High School is very very different from what i see here in the states. When i finished high school in my home country i had the choice to go DIRECTLY to Medical School. I'm wondering what makes it different here. Why do i need 4 years in College ? When i started going to Uni here in USA i noticed that students were taking an average of 4,5 different courses per semester. This was odd to me because i came from a highschool where we had 15 different courses each year. My younger brother attended high school here in Illinois and the material they were going over in his junior year , reminded me of like.. 6th grade. I'm not joking guys. We had written and oral exams for each of them multiple times per semester. We were pushed to our limits. Covering thousands and thousands of pages of lectures in our books. To be a straight A student, you needed to either have photographic memory.. or actually have an understanding of the subject. There were no multi-choice quizzes !@$# My Senior year i had to prepare and go over all 4 years of our Biology courses and would get 3-5 topics. The teacher handed me a piece of chalk and sat back while i stood in front of the board and literally had to hold a 30 minute speech to her & the whole class on everything i knew about any of those given topics. And you couldn't just memorize the entire book and rant like a robot, if they noticed you were one of those people they would frequently interrupt you .. ask questions.. change topics. It was brutal compared to what i see the educational system is like here in America No offense guys. After 8 years of primary school, at the age of 14, 15 .. we had 3 choices You could - Go to trade school(path to getting a Job quickly) if you knew what trade you wanted to be OR General education high schools ( path to further Academic Studies or what you call College) presented only 2 options - 1. History & Linguistics - focusing heavily on subjects like foreign languages, various levels of history, social studies etc.. 2. Math & Natural Sciences - focusing heavily on math, physics, chemistry, biology , computer sciences.. etc. Our high school curriculum was so exhausting that when i started college in the states , i was blazing through all the tests averaging 96 points because it was all material we had covered in our freshman year of high school. i'm just confused with the whole system here in USA What am i supposed to do 4 years in College ? I feel like it would be a tremendous waste of time & resources. Can someone please tell me what courses med schools require you to have completed in order to qualify ? I don't mean to come off as arrogant or ignorant so i really apologize to people who are dedicated and working hard on getting there and might find my comment frustrating or insulting , i really don't wan't to come off as a jerk and now looking at everything i wrote in the heat of the moment , just rambling .. so i'm sorry I just want to know the hard facts. The bottom line. What is required ? Show me the shortcut. As far as experience goes, i understand that med school itself will take lots of time and effort and residency as well and everything after that. I just don't get what the 4 years prior to med school are for.

You could go and get your education revalidated in the US. Have the courses revalidated in a way. So you have enough credits to graduate with a bachelor. If you could write a dissertation for a college committee, explaining your position. Also having a MD. From another country does not directly translate. Because of Language and National and states licenses. Where do you live? What state in the US?. I know private universities love people like you.
