According to Wikipedia, "As the murals were painted directly onto the wall without plaster or adequate underpainting they began to suffer decay very quickly." William Morris later had to completely repaint his design for the ceiling due to the poor condition of the original mural. The chaotic painting process and lack of proper preparation contributed to the rapid deterioration of the murals.
