Fellow single homeowner here - the pride is real. I also hate half-done spaces, so when I got the keys I immediately ripped out all carpet and replaced with beautiful floors, painted every room, built furniture/fittings (inc. a shoe wall. It was necessary.) ...ripped all the hateful tiles off the kitchen & bathroom walls and made my space how I wanted it. Biiiig changes. Between Ikea, aggressive vintage/thrift-hunting, H&M and TK Maxx, I decorated & my home for less than £5k. Oh and I gold-leafed a kitchen wall, haha. It is the most satisfying thing and 2 years in I'm obviously still making tweaks and changes. Congrats, and enjoy every moment of it, even the shitty ones, cos they're YOUR shitty moments in YOUR home :)

Peel-and-stick wallpaper might make the DIY process easier for you!

Love it! Actually, your "hole"/recession is a really cool architectural detail which the right print, painting, or 3D image could make pop (I'd use T.Rex somewhere else.). Filling it up may not be a DIY project and, as you say, bids in LA are mad expensive...You may be better off making the fireplace changes first and then decide on what to do with the recessed area. As John Lennon would say: "All I am saying/is give "holes" a chance!"

Nothing compares to owning your own home. As a realtor I can concur that pride of ownership trumps any loss of square footage! So much better to pay for your own small(er) space than someone else's big one. Congratulations.

Congratulations on your new home! Nothing like owning your own home. In reference to things that go along with home ownership, have you thought of getting a home warranty? I've usually seen them offered during the negotiating process. It has always come in handy for us. Just a thought.

Wall paper would look awesome in the powder room. I tried once to wall paper, but had to call in a professional. Give it go, but you might find it a hard DIY.

Only part way thru- I think paint the square where the dinosaur is, maybe a dark teal or green. It will make it look like more of a “feature” until you can change it
