Eric, Thanks for watching and the kind words!! I try to find a pattern of deer and place my Reconyx cameras in areas I think mature bucks will use. Often these locations are where bucks will be a night - when they are more active. I then try to put the pieces together and find bottleneck, etc. to hunt in between where I’m getting pics. Usually where deer make the most sign is where they feel the safest - the wind, etc., is in their favor.

continued...Hunting where I find the most sign often results in only spooking mature bucks. I try to find a spot in their likely travel route - where the odds aren’t as much in the buck’s favor. Deer will use each area a bit differently - but this strategy has worked well for me in many areas. May you have a blessed season! - Grant

Holes, dimples, etc., in antlers can be caused by injuries when in velvet, insects, etc. I really like such unique antlers!

I enjoy watching and learning about mature bucks. Deer herds function best when mature bucks are present and I get plenty of meat from doe harvest. So, I opt to pass on bucks till they are 4 years old.

Mike, Mature bucks have glands that aren’t developed in immature bucks. The pheromones (external hormones) help synchronize breeding so fawns are born on time. In addition mature bucks suppress immature bucks from partaking in the rut as aggressively. This helps immature bucks gain more body weight at a critical time of development and allow them to be healthier.

Question. I'm new to all this. Are you putting cameras on private property or are you hiding them out anywhere? We live near the Olympic Forest. I fear they'll get stolen.

Mr. grant...I was just curious if you have found out through reconyx imagery that 4.5 yr old bucks and older, have drastically reduced their roaming tendencies? like you said they seem to become more "range bound" just wondering if you have noticed it as well with your organized way of using deer cams. thanks and good luck!
@GrowingDeerTV

+Matt Havens Great question! Yes, the tendency is for bucks generally much older than 4.5 to decrease their roaming tendencies. This is a general observation, not necessarily the case for each deer. Deer, not just bucks senses get worse with age, staying in familiar territory keeps them safe. -Matt

Mr grant I have a question when u say the deer need to express full potential what's best to help do that ???
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 7 жыл бұрын
There are 3 things that determine a bucks antler development; genetics, nutrition, and age. The best way to allow a buck to express his genetic potential is to supply quality nutrition and allow the deer to reach 4 years of age or older. Here's a video that explains how to age deer on the hoof: www.growingdeer.tv/#/aging-bucks-on-the-hoof Thanks for watching! -Daniel

There are many other biological factors that clearly show the benefits of managing a herd to have a balanced adult sex ratio and allowing bucks to mature to older age. - Grant

I would take buck grant. Why wait if he's a mature buck? You could lose him to a car accident or other means. It's not always bout the inches;)
