Mostly liberty eagles and half eagles. Got a few Indian half’s but they have gotten too expensive the last few years. Always in cardboard nothing graded , pretty sure most of mine would be considered jewelry grade. And yes I got modern bullion, eagles, Britannias, maples Never bars or rounds. I would be happy with some placer gold if I had the chance. Recently tried my hand at prospecting. No luck!!! I moved to Puerto Rico. There’s no real stacking community here that I’ve seen, but of course privacy is the rule here. My stacking days are over here. So when I visit the states, always on the lookout for a good deal. , cheers Campbell, your underrated in my opinion.

Short story you’ll find interesting. About 10 years ago or maybe more I had a half eagle Indian i picked up years earlier that I was looking to cash out of, took to a coin shop in Tennessee, after careful examining the dealer shook his head and told me it’s fake but real gold, asking me to come back next week, he was excited and we exchanged numbers and a week later i went back. Now two dealers and after examining my coin the oldest man says “ son you got yourself the best fake I’ve ever seen “ the man made me a offer I couldn’t refuse. I sold it. He claimed its nazi gold. I didn’t know what to think but the offer was too good and the stink he put the coin for me personally made it even easier to sell it. I don’t have pics or receipts so can’t prove it, but that’s what happened, I’ve often wondered if I made a mistake but in hindsight, i can’t in good conscience ever want to own such a thing.

I personally prefer modern bullions. I feel more confident when buying them I recognize them easily and would spot a fake immediately, plus there are not so many variables like with pre-33 coins. Above all I'm not a collector, just a stacker and modern bullions give me more security that I'll be able to re-sell them easily should I have to (I don't live in the US...). Thanks for your videos!

On the selling end, bullion is so much easier. You know exactly what you're going to get with no haggling. Pre 33 is more than the spot price of the gold content as now you're dealing with numismatics. Local shops will only pay wholesale or less and going the auction route is time consuming with no guarantees how things will work out. Both are great but bullion is easier.

I'll take the pre 33 any day. I like stuff that was meant to be used. Coins that were in circulation. I don't have any gold now but I just got a sizeable windfall and I might consider it before I just stick it in a fiat investment. I just have to decide if I want to go with a few double eagles or if I want to go with a 1/4, 1/2, and an eagle as well as a double. Premium wise the 2 doubles would make more sense but I like the idea of having 1 of each.

Not only did the copper added to US coins it harden them it also kept people from melting them down. You would need to have the resulting melt refined to 999 in order to sell it. Roosevelt did not take all gold coins, each family member was allowed $100. in gold, but most families were poor due to the depression. If our country and others were to call in gold I believe it will be bullion coins, they ,most of them anyway have bizarre dollar amounts on them. $50.00 for an ounce? Is this in NEW Dollars??

It would depend, if a single coin cost this much compared to spot price bullion coins. It would depend on the coin. I would want both though, just in case the price of gold grows enough so one bullion coin cost the same, as spot price goes up, premium coin premiums go down.

I think having Gold Bullion is really important though for when you need money fast. In my own experience when it comes to speed of sale Gold and Silver Bullion move way faster than collectible coins. My Silver Libertads are sitting on EBay collecting dust. The US Govt WOULD need to pay you fair market value for coins that sell for a premium, which is why so many pre33 coins were not required to be surrendered. You could keep 5 ozt of any gold coin and you could keep coins that had special collector value. Most people did not read the executive order in 1933 and turned in more than they had to. But the Federal Govt was not about to go into the coin business. They were only interested in coins that traded at bullion prices, less the five ounce exemption.

Just bought my first Pre33 Double Eagle Saint. It is slabbed and graded MS63 by NGC. As I do not love the slabs I am thinking of removing it. What do you think about that?
@CampbellsCoins Жыл бұрын
Congrats on your first Saint! If you're not a fan of slabs, why did you buy one in a slab? You could have bought a raw pre 33 Saint for hundreds less. Slabs do a few things: when you go to sell, it shows the buyer this piece is authentic (not always but generally speaking). It protects the coin from wear/tear and the elements. And it allows you to handle the coin without potentially lowering the value of it. It's your coin and you're free to do what you want, if you want it out of the slab, take it out. But since you asked, I'd leave that coin in the slab and buy a raw Saint. Taking it out of the slab will dramatically lower the value for you in the immediate future. If you bought this particular coin because it looks nice and you wanted a nice looking coin, just be really careful when you're breaking it out of the slab.

By the way what I've been trying to find confirmation on what are the impurities and pre 33 gold? See normally gold copper and silver are diet magnetic. But when it comes to pre 33 goal that is supposed to be ever so slightly repelled by a magnet because it is made up of 90% called and 10% copper. But when I do the test to see if it's paramagnetic or diamagnetic the test seems to indicate that it is paramagnetic. My conjecture is that it has a little bit of iron ore nickel in it, just enough just enough to not only counteract the diet magnetic tendencies but cause the coin to be slightly attracted to the magnet as if it was paramagnetic. I've done this test with quite a bit of different gold that is the newer gold. And they all test out just fine.
