G'day, Yay Team ! I wonder if "Bletch" is "AmeriKan-English" for Bleach..., in the same way that they say "Aluminum" instead of Aluminium...; and although they can spell SOLDER, they invariably pronounce the word *"Sodder..."* , which raises an eyebrow in places where "Sodomy" was the Legal term for Penetrative Anal Sex...(!) ? Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

Because cody is the kind of person who cuts his finger open to put a magnet it in and then watches the wound fill with puss and get inflamed (That was fucking awesome, by the way. Metal as fuck). He has a wonderful curiosity and knowledge but he needs to be more responsible, if not for his own sake than for the sake of viewers who are going to try this at home and end up dieing. The video is made in a "try it at home" kind of way and yet he barely mentions anything about safety. Very irresponsible.
@glenthemann
@glenthemann 8 жыл бұрын
Look where he lives and grew up.. it's a goldmine of infinite possibility. he's not really constrained in any way.. I'd have loved to grow up in such a place - I can't shoot off a model rocket without the cops called.. He's well aware of the dangers of his actions, but not to the same strangled extent that many of us are used to. I think just due to the nature of this he's perhaps not as cognizant of the situations and potential situations others would be in should they attempt the same things. All in all he's really not responsible for he actions of anyone who watches his videos. In some ways over the top warnings and "dont ever do this's" are just condescending to the viewer base

I was wondering if you could start writing the chemical equations that you are doing in the videos. I teach middle school and I think it would interest my students if you could include the equations in the comments or during the videos like you have done in the past when you added hydrogen peroxide to the equation to reduce the nitric acid you were going to use. This would help me explain what is going on in the reaction to a interested audience.

Hey Cody. You mentioned that there might be a bit of copper in that bead. Iodine has an affinity for gold but copper is also in the same series of elements. So it would stand to reason that there is copper in your bead. A second refining with Aqua Regia and dropping with Sodium Metabisulfite will remove the copper. Since Iodine is a very selective leachant of gold, it could be used to remove gold off of other metals like stainless steel and any other non-reactive metal. Just something to think about. Great Job! I enjoy your videos alot. Keep them coming. RA

They especially love these types of videos where you refine some of the most basic components of the planet into a much more "precious" type of materiel. *Seriously though, thanks for your videos. There are normally fine strands of gold from pads on the silicon, inside most high end chips, to the silver pins heading to the outside of the package. If you search for images of "decapped chip" you will see these very fine gold wires. The only danger is the arsenic n-type dopant used in the silicon. If it was not for that, I would suggest using a ball mill to generate a powder and panning for the gold! Of course some of the packages are plastic (need to incinerate first) and some are ceramic.

Those PCB fingers are not just gold, but copper (17 to 70 μm) plated with gold. The other boards are probably plated with the electroless nickel immersion gold process. That's a 3 to 6 μm thick layer of nickel and a .5 μm layer of gold on top of the copper. The ram fingers are probably a hard gold plating, meant to protect connector fingers from wear. They'll usually have closer to 1 μm of gold.

It would be impure, tiny of silicon and other metals from the PCB would get in with the gold. The chemical process is more clean. Plus it's really hard to scrape it off, it's like trying to scrape off ink from a paper.

Cody, thanks for the well thought out, nicely explained videos. I will likely never attempt this kind of extraction on my own, but knowing how it's done is fascinating. Your style of explaining reminds me of one of my college professors years ago, that being said, if your career path doesn't go the way you desire, you may have a promising future in university level instruction.

Hey don't forget to toss all the copper in the trash from the boards its only worth about 10x as much as the gold youll get off the boards by weight. Yep thats right those boards have pennies worth of gold per pound and about 10x as much money in copper. Any circuit board is made up of thin copper sheets. A copper sheet from a single computer mother board is worth 15 or 20 cents and the gold you.ll recover is worth maybe 5 cents if your very lucky. I live in ohio north east ohio wont say exactly where but one company that did this recovery nonsense for a while use to toss out strips of mother boards after the recovered the gold looked like a brown nasty mess. Me my one brother and brother in law put those strips through acid and resolved every thing the plastic coating etc floats and the copper goes in to solution and settles out as powdered copper . A heaping truck load of board scrap yielded multiple 5 gallon buckets of purified copper powder giving us a net profit of about 6500 bucks split 3 ways. We used bucked with holes drilled in them and filters bought from a local restaurant supply place used for filtering fryer oil to reclaim all the copper powder from the neutralized acid. What you basically have in those boards in the end is the small traces of gold become the waste product that you set to the side while reclaiming the copper. If you start with the goal of getting that copper from the boards and save your waste gold left overs over a year the gold becomes a nice bonus also there's more silver on various boards. All current electronics for the most part use high silver content solder as lead is bad for you or some such. Fact is this is why game consoles like x box 360 got the errors related to video and chip-set needing "reballed" or reworked. While silver is non toxic it is also more brittle than lead and has a higher chance of failure do to heating and cooling cycles. This is why xbos gpus and chip sets come loose causign the various errors. Also a reason why laptop video fails etc. Any how re run that scrap and see for your self how much copper you get compared to how much gold in scrap out value.

You can go to a lot of electronics disposal places and they will gladly let you take the parts off their hands because it saves them money, and you could do a larger scale process and potentially make a very tiny profit.

'Noble metals' sounds like something an alchemist would've said. The book _The Golden Game_ is a wonderful overview and contains many facsimile reproductions (w/transcriptions and commentary) of 17th century alchemical manuscripts. I understand he's a geologist and/or a chemist but thought he might still might find some of it interesting for historical purposes. Garland Publishing also did some reprints of some classic texts a while back. Thank you for all of your fascinating videos! I dont know anything about any of these (or mining or bee-keeping) subjects but Im enjoying your videos tremendously, and learning bits here and there. Man, how I would love to keep bees,, unfortunately I rent in NYC.

If you do a fire assay you will get rid of all base metals in your bead. It's a more complete process. What you did is just a smelt, which is the first phase of a fire assay, a reduction process. The second phase is an oxidation process, which gives you pure precious metals. Most of this will be gold, but also silver, palladium and some platinum. I have made some beads close to 2 grams from RAM fingers and chips. Takes a lot of material to get much gold.

Decades back, I ruined my wedding ring with accidental immersion in Ferric Chloride PCB etching solution - the surface went spongy and the gold softened considerably. As Ferric Chloride and similar PCB etchants are easily available, they might prove useful in removing copper from gold when starting with PCB materials.
