When Monique said “I did what my mama told me I was supposed to do with my child” at 4:22 that spoke in volumes. A lot of times in these circumstances such as abuse, it’s a cycle that’s passed down; which is why it’s so hard to break. It’s not at all excusable, but it gives you insight into why certain things occurred. I’ve seen it (not to this extreme) happen where unhealthy cycles are passed down throughout generations and I admire people that break them because it is not easy.

I remember watching this movie few years back and being so severely traumatized just by the scenes, I can’t imagine the trauma the children feel when they endure this pain in reality. The actors all deserve a standing ovation for their impeccable performances!
@gemmarichardson20202 жыл бұрын
with all due respect, if the scenes severely traumatized you, did you have nightmares about the scenes? did you have flashbacks about them? did it cripple your ability to do what you normally do on a daily basis? did it make you question your trust in people or your environment? if no, you were not traumatized by the scenes. you can however, be deeply affected, moved, empathetic, sad, etc., i'm not trying to single you out or attack you, but i'm so tired of people using the word traumatized so freely as it waters the definition down. people, like Precious, other victims of this disgusting, unbearable, life altering abuse are the ones who are truly, traumatized.

This scene has such brilliant writing. Monique's character rambles on and on about such inconsequential things, but in a way that makes it clear she thinks she's getting to a point, even though you know she's just stalling. Like describing the pillow she laid Precious on in bed, or the random way she tries to explain that Precious was born in the summer, even though she can't even name which month and Precious has to correct her and it's a whole different time of year. The way she looks at Precious and says "You remember?" when she's talking about her birth... how would a child remember her birth? And then her description of the abuse is so horrifying. "She didn't scream or nothing." She was a /child/. Insane acting, insane writing.

That scene is the most shocking, raw, disturbing and highly emotional piece of drama ever shown in cinema. The acting and delivery of Monique and Mariah combined with Gabourey's hopeless reaction upon what she's hearing is too devastatingly real. Mariah wiped away a real tear in this scene. The mental challenge to occupy and play these characters to this depth and filth is truly astonishing and is a testament to all 3 actors. The bar they set is too high. Meryl WISHED she could reach those heights. Mariah needs to do more serious roles. Monique and Gabourey should be doing more films also.

*She did steal her man. Did you not hear what she mentioned? She mentioned that Precious did steal him and made him go away because she let him have her - she didn’t scream, she didn’t cry, she didn’t fumble... she didn’t do nothing except lay there and let him have her.*
@earlaweese3 жыл бұрын
*Also, Precious had fantasies about her white math teacher getting rid of his wife and moving Precious in with him to Westchester. She was evidently a man thief that had no consideration for the wives/girlfriends of the men she was stealing - she even had a picture of him in her photo album.*

@@calciumstealer2448 *Dude, toddlers know what they’re doing. Precious is guilty. She knew that she liked it or she would’ve respectfully told her dad that she isn’t very interested in it and that it’s a considerate offer, but her mom is the one who deserves the sex. It could’ve just been handled maturely, but since toddlers like to be abusive and selfish, all of this mess got stirred up which ended up in her mother losing everything: her man, the welfare, and her two grandchildren. Precious ruined it all for her and tried to make it seem like she was raped. People that are raped scream for help and cry; Precious sat there and did absolutely nothing for YEARS. She wasn’t innocent.*

I am a 68 year old white male and this movie tore my heart out. Mo'Nique should have won a thousand awards for her performance, as well as Gabouray. Hell, I was even surprised by Mariah. I'm not condoning what kind of mother Mo'Nique's character was, but I can only imagine the horrors she must have faced growing up. This movie is in my top 10 of best movies.

Mo'nique's performance in this scene was amazing... Her "tough" exterior shown by clothes, denial speech about drugs, nervous touching her clothes, calling Precious a liar & mrs. Weiss judgmental etc, all in all to blame the victim and most importantly get sympathy for herself instead of helping her daughter in time of need & preventing her husband to get in touch with her daughter

I still can't watch this scene without tearing up. MoNique and Mariah gave it their all with this one. My heart aches for Precious and the individual abuse that she endured by the hands of her parents. Parents are supposed to be a child's fiercest protectors, and the fact that she never got that protection is gut wrenching.

"Who was gonna love me? Who was gonna make ME feel good?" Sadly, this phrase is repeated in social services offices all over the country every day by mothers trying to justify why they stayed with a man who was hurting their children. It's sad that, especially in low income communities, there is a culture of women basing their self worth in whether or not they have a man. Even at the expense if their children's safety. O

I think I'm just dead. I'd listen to her & show no emotion. She "had a baby, & a man. Had to take care of both of them." That's sounds like you had two children... One was actually her child. Get rid of the other. And just ew. I've seen comments on yt about ppl having sex beside a baby. IDC if the baby doesn't know, I'd know. How do ppl even stay in the mood w/ innocence beside them? That's all kinds of wrong.
