During a tense family dinner, Sam (Tobey Maguire) explodes at his daughter, Isabelle (Bailee Madison), and she retaliates with some very hurtful comments.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Yes, being in a war changes you, especially what happened to him, but to say it’s out of his control is kind of being light on him and his ordeal. Yes it was out his control on what happened to him, but that’s not an excuse to make when he is tearing up the house, becoming a danger to his family, pointing a gun at his wife and brother and trying to commit suicide by cop to get rid of his guilt. I think people overlook these things and just see that he was a soldier and his brother and wife had a romance, even though he was confirmed dead, so they get mad cause that’s what typical people do. It’s not out of his control to talk to someone or to go get help, which he really needed. His family did try to understand him, help him, and they tried to pick up where they left off but he made himself the stranger. You can’t really help or try to understand someone when they don’t open up and let you know whats wrong, he never asked for help until the very end of the movie when he was already placed in that facility.

This scene makes me tear up every time. The actor for the girl did perfect in the role of a bratty kid who doesn't understand why her dad keeps leaving for war and when she starts making up the lies it reminded me of me so much when I was younger. She definitely sounded like a mistaught kid with parent issues. Tobey is also perfect. He keeps a straight face of horror, betrayal, and anger, but it turns out that the girl is lying but Sam in unaware. Great scene.

I have served with people who had really bad PTSD, really bad depression, like crippling. Tobey captured it 100% accrauratly. They do not look at you, they look through you. Eyes look almost dead, but they function in a very robotic manner. He absolutely captured it and acted it out, very impressive acting.

I knew someone who must've had PTSD. He was 17, and his parents had forced him to attend a military boarding school that had lots of bullies, and he wasn't ready for it. When he came home he just couldn't seem to relax. I think he just wanted to avoid everyone.
