Mixing an aqueous solution of calcium chloride (CaCl2) with another of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) produces calcium carbonate (CaCO3) tha is practically insoluble and precipitates. It is also produced sodium chloride (NaCl) that stays dissolved in the water. It is a double displacement and precipitation reaction.
CaCl2 + Na2CO3 → CaCO3 + 2NaCl
At the moment of the reaction it is observed a white precipitate of calcium carbonate. In order to separate it I use a piece of filter paper on a funnel. The pulpy mass of calcium carbonate is dryed afterwords in an oven or in the air.
In the next episode I will turn this calcium carboante into calcium oxide or quicklime through a thermal decomposition reaction or in this case also known as calcination.
