Its a transition metal, so they generally have different ions (depending on which given one) In the question, he used Pb(NO3)2, tracing back on the criss-cross method, that shows that the lead (Pb)charge used in that reaction would be +2, If it was Pb(NO3)4 then the lead (Pb) charged used would be Pb+4 @@marlenegarcia6811 😀

@Prinze203
@Prinze203 Жыл бұрын
dunno if you still need the answer but it depends on the group the element is in on the periodic table. For example, the halogens have a charge of -1, and the alkalai metals have a charge of +1. You can easily find a periodic table that displays this information on google.

For 7:38 there are 2 NO3's so wouldn't you write Na2(NO3)2? Since (NO3)2 would have a -2 charge as there are two of them so it would require 2 NA's ?
@youtube_cws1969
@youtube_cws1969 3 жыл бұрын
NO3 still has a -1 charge but there's two of them to match the 2+ charge of lead. When you combine Na and NO3 together they both have a -1 charge so it becomes NaNO3. Na2(NO3)2 is just reduced to NaNO3 since everything is divisible by 2.

What's the purpose of "cross-swap", and when is it necessary?
@5kunk157h35h17
@5kunk157h35h17 4 жыл бұрын
It just makes it simpler to see how many molecules are needed for each. If the former has +1 and the latter -2, you need two of the former to stabilize with one of the latter. It's not necessary but could be used to double check that your answer is right. That's what i think at least.
@kevinmason9592
@kevinmason9592 4 жыл бұрын
Confusion: at 10:16 you say that Pb has to have a +2 charge because there are 2 NO3's which make a -2 charge. So you're manipulating the charge of the PB to match the polyatomic ion. However, if I look at a periodic table, I see Pb being in the column that is + or minus - 4. So my question is, why don't we manipulate the charge of the polyatomic ion to match the charge of the lead, and five the NO3 a -2 charge?
@mikuculus3720
@mikuculus3720 3 жыл бұрын
Pb has multiple oxidation states because it’s a transitioning metal but No3 is at a constant state of -. So we add more No3 to even it out.

Hey! I know that this is super late, but if anyone else has this question, it is because Cl is an ION when (/after) going through this reaction. Therefore, it does not need to be marked as a diatomic element - which is why it typically has a 2 beside it as Cl2. That is also the reason that he is emphasizing the importance of finding the correct charges. (Because they are all ions). Hope this helps!

Douglas W Every element in a group has the same charge, you can calculate for the charge too by looking at the valence electrons, eg. Oxygen's valence electron would be 6 as 16-2-8, and you can see that it is missing 2 electrons for it to be stable, therefore it's charge would be -2.
