I think most of the posters here are not fully understanding the concept of the zero fret system. What it does is it gives you a consistent tone and makes your open strings sound like they are fretted which is what you want in the studio.

Every time I see a bass strung like that I always assume they're guitarists who decided to learn how to play bass, but never took the time to learn how to properly install the strings.

For decades I have used a sharp 4B pencil to put some lubricating deposits into guitar nut slots. (HB will work but the softer the lead the better. Even a regular pencil is better than nothing.) String popping during tuning is gone. I reapply it with every string change. It's a little messy but so am I.

He's doing that string wrapping technique that is supposed to stop the winding from slipping and string going immediately dead. Problem is it's hard to put on and hard to get them back off. I have always found that if I just use lots of turns I have no issue with wrap slippage. But I'm mostly guitar and perhaps bass has more issues with wrap slipping. I dunno. Plus I also mostly use hex core strings.

I love the Zero Glide, and would recommend it to anyone who needs any major nut work or a replacement. But yeah, Dave is right, this is just as much work as any standard nut installation, not the easy infomercial the company sells it as. So don’t go for it because you think it’s easy, do it because you like the final result.

As far as I understand, a zero fret helps solve the problem of sharp intonation on the first 5 or so frets. Ukuleles and a lot of guitars need them badly IMHO. Basses, I don't know.

I made my own Zero Glide with a piece of hard spruce and a ordinary bit of fret wire on a Korean built Stratocaster-lookalike with a slab vintage style fingerboard. I know I shortened the scale length ever so slightly but the difference is very small. The string height over the first fret is right on and will never change. The guitar is easy to tune and holds the tuning very well.
@simonkormendy849

Tried installing one on my Gibson USA LP Studio guitar and it was a PITA to get right, and I found that the zero-fret ended up with grooves in it due to the string tension (the frets they give you should really be made out of stainless steel cause the metal they're made from is a bit too soft), it didn't help with the tuning stability of the guitar, it actually made it worse.

@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why it is a bad idea is just that it is a cheap gimmick. Good intentions...bad execution. It's just to have an "easy to install" alternative instead of a real zero fret (which is a nice thing imo, but isn't really an after market option if you don't want to glue in a piece of wood ) And you see how it comes out of the box. Only achievement: Giving a good idea (zero fret) an even worse reputation. Everyone wants something changed on their guitar, but without changing anything about the guitar. So no holes can be drilled, no piece of wood can be added. If you put in the time to do it right it pays off.
@mooseteets

yeah i agree wholeheartedly. what i ended up doing was putting on a tusq instead, and all that needed was a tiny bit of filing in the E slot, easy peazy

Is this not the same concept as having a brass nut?
@erickleefeld4883
@erickleefeld4883 6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. They're similar in achieving the same tone between open and fretted strings. But with a zero-fret, the nut acts only as a guide for the horizontal spacing of the strings, while the fret sets the height. The nut slots actually go down further than the fret itself, so the strings never even touch the bottom. Brian May has a zero-fret on his guitar that he made with his dad, and he attributes some of the stability of his whammy bar to that nut system. And while he has a headstock with three strings on each side, it's really narrow so that the path to the tuning machines remains almost dead straight like on a Strat.

Facepalm emoji. Jumped in without thinking it through? Two things: 1. Next time, try a couple of supplied frets in there and string it up BEFORE you glue it in. Then you may not have to work on the fret in such a confined area. One of the smaller ones would have worked better. 2. See how the strings fit in the slot before installing it.

You can buy a much better correctly made zerofret retrofit with no installation hassles. Zerofret concept gives way better tonality than traditional nut. Instead of zerofret retrofit, you can replace your original bone or graphite nut with a metal nut with non-binding notches, thus giving you zerofret tonality.

I like zero-frets. I've got a bass and an acoustic guitar that each use them, and I appreciate the consistency of tone between open and fretted strings. My Strat needs a new nut, anyway, from all the abuse I've put it through of string gauge changes over the years. Think I'll be getting this put in.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 6 жыл бұрын
I've still got a zeroglide gibson style laying around. Videos like this really motivate me. Work to do? Just everything that could be wrong from the get go. I wonder what the fretwire is made off. Zerofrets have to take a lot of abuse. But you can't just replace the fret, cause the tang is off-center. In a perfect world, the guys from graphtech would make a decent one.

Ned Steinberger doesn't play guitar, either. And all his instruments in the '80s used a zero-fret system. (Traditionally made from scratch with a distinct fret and guide nut, not a retrofit like this.)
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 6 жыл бұрын
Have you ever thought out how to put in a zero fret as a retrofit? You'd have to fill the nutslot, maybe even glue on some kind of extension to have some meat for the -"string guide". It is a good idea for those who'd like to have a zero fret on their instrument, they just fucked up the product itself. If you think about a zero fret in the design stage, it's even easier to do than making a nut. Pros/cons (no particular order): +open strings sound like fretted strings + lower action in the first frets + intonation problems: zero +helpful with bigsby vibrato (while a roller nut would be even better) +either lasts a liftetime (stainless steel) or is as easy to replace as any other fret +Try to make a 12-string guitar with a compensated nut or just put in a zero fret (saves a lot of work) -If the zerofret and the string guide behind it don't work well together, bending can seem odd. You start bending, the string still moves over the zero fret until it hits the side of the string guide. Some describe it as harder. So the zero fret is a potential problem for the company if it isn't done right. -workers need to be told how to make them to enjoy the upside...it seems it was easier to show them how to make nuts with shitty action so nobody can complain about buzzing. After the sale, nobody cares. With the zero fret, you don't have to adjust the nutslot height, cause the fret determines the height. If it's not done right, buzzing is easy to achieve (sales problems could be the case) It's probably a German Invention. Brand who have them: Düsenberg, Gretsch, Hagström...and if you know about Django, maybe you've seen some Maccaferri Guitars that have them too. If the zero fret is the same height as the other frets, it's a "real" zero fret, than there is one with more height. When you play at the third fret, you don't have contact with the second fret. That's how the "real" zero fret works. The higher one is easier to make but big upside in the intonation is rather a compromise.
