In this video I demonstrate the first 2 steps of the Precision Load development process put forth by Erik Cortina in his "Chasing the Lands is Stupid - Don't do it" video. I use a magazine length limited option and show how we picked the COAL, charge weights, and primers. We review the data that was generated and analyze it.

Reminds me of the test I did with my 223 rem using 8208 XBR. The two primers I used were the Remington 7 1/2, and the CCI 450. The 7 1/2's were producing extreme high and low spikes down low like the GM205MAR's did. I did several strings with that primer. The node I got between strings was relatively in the same location. Almost seems to be based off of muzzle velocity. I only did 1 string with the CCI 450's. The 450's ended up needing a higher powder charge to achieve the same velocity as the 7 1/2's, however the velocity increase between charge weights was much smoother and had no spikes. The node seemed to be relatively around the same velocity too. Doing further testing around the node with several 5 shot groups to verify ES/SD with both primers, the 450's did in fact yield an over all lower ES/SD than the 7 1/2's did so I went with them. Now onto the CBTO portion of tuning the jump while maintaining inside my internal magazine.

Once I find powder charge I will load 0.1 above and below that charge to do fine tune. Then seat depth test. Most likely you will also see lower SD for the seat depth that shoots best.

I'm not even remotely close to this level of reloading but it's extremely interesting and a great video... I normally just start at max and drop .2 at a time until I have 10 rounds loaded then shoot them all through my chronograph and look for a velocity node on the upper end then just load right in the middle and shoot a 5 shot group... if that doesn't work I change the seating depth and start over. It's not the best way but it's the easiest way for me because again I'm not even remotely close to being this dialed in on my reloading skills... LOL Hopefully one day I'll be there.

I’m thinking the 41 is the way to go. Largely, from experience as well as your velocity. That lower node looks workable to me. After seating depth tuning, you got it made.

I’ve heard you mention before that you increase your charges based on case capacity. 6.5cm. .2gr increments, .3 grain increments for larger cases. Etc. I’m loading a magnum cartridge for the first time (7mm STW) and was wondering what increments you would use. Thanks for your time and the great content!

I think there is something to be said about where the shots are on the shot marker in this test on the 41 primers if you look at shot 2 and 3 they basically are touching which tells me this is a node with the particular oal used in this test…

I'd be exploring the 42.7-42.9 with the 41s. If they ever come back in stock I'm gettin about 10k to go with my 34s. I've had great luck with them and they are nearly as consistent as BR primers with a harder cup for floating pins. I try to keep my loading simple and versatile. For primers that means 41, 34, WSP, and WLP. I know people do it, but I'm not trying to tweak loads with primers. If it's that touchy, I'm gonna move on. Never been into the wonder pill. I demand accuracy, but I won't tolerate a finicky gun or round. I like good eaters, too many options out there to put up with picky nonsense and all these shortages show I'm right...to my mind anyway.

You mentioned your brass was 4x fired therefore fire formed and that is critical to consistency. What is a fella to do if he buys a couple hundred rounds of new good brass? Load them all and shoot them with cheap, available components THEN start developing? Or develop, then be prepared to develop all over again once they are fire formed? Thanks!

I think I would go with the CCI 41's. More constant velocity across all charges, and overall higher velocity is preferred. I would also give CCI 450's a shot.
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a ton of 450s in stock at the moment so I didn't want to use the rest I had to develop a load and run out. I have had almost universal response out of the 450 vs the cci-41 so I wonder if the only real difference it the cup thickness.

@@BoltActionReloading I've not used the CCI 41's so that's good to know. My local Bass Pro has started getting CCI 450s about once a week but the timing is random, and they are gone by noon.

You mentioned the margin of error of your MV measuring device, you could include that in your graphs, it might influence some of your choices... Or it might make you lose all faith in our "node" methodology, lol. Thanks for the video.
@BoltActionReloading

Telling some people that there is error in a lab radars measurement (or any measurement for that matter) seems to enrage people that aren't worth engaging with. All the data I have generated supports nodes.
@DracoOmnia
@DracoOmnia 3 жыл бұрын
@@BoltActionReloading enraging people not worth engaging with seems worthwhile to me... Meanwhile, it may open your horizons on other possible node ranges hidden within the range of error. When we are talking about loading to the individual granule of powder (or as close to that as we can) and you are only loading 1 shot for every individual powder measure the MoE would seem worth considering. Then again, I've got some recency bias from both a stats class and a data visualization class so I may just have a preference for data dense visualizations

Most people don't understand my reasoning for this method, I get a lot of questions about it. Have you watched these videos?: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn_NpX54aNKkn6s kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYjSXndqZbJsj5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppK4fnR5l6-ritU They largely cover my reasoning for using this method. For any who choose not to use it, no concern of mine. My primary reasons for its use is to very quickly determine if a primer / powder combination is working well at all (See the 308 primer video) determine if the load is going to hit pressure with just a few rounds (anyone who has had to disassemble hours of work should understand this) and give a a good starting point to look around for a particular lot of powder and primers. I am not advocating for shooting 10 rounds, picking a load and its done for life. You still have to validate it. You would never assume from a statistical perspective that you would choose your final load based on 1 data point, but I don't need 5 blown primers at a given charge weight to tell me the load is too hot either. Hopefully this makes some sense.

Love your videos! A question, if you expand with 2 tou less , what neck bushing are you usign while full lenght sizing? And also, what neck lube do you use? Thanks in advance!
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Teo, I am glad you enjoy the channel. For these I am FL sizing with a Forster die with no expander button and then opening up with the EM. It is not a bushing die. If I were using a bushing I would want to find whatever bushing gave at least .003 of interference and then use the EM. I have tried different combos for lube and not sure it matters anything huge depending on what length you want to go to if you need to remove it.
