Nicely done. I just about finished mine as well. I had some 1" steel plate that I used for the mount (way overkill) and I had a big stainless bolt that I turned the head round. I added a brass plug on the end of the bolt where it contacts the cross slide. I like your shiny brass better but I only had small diameter stuff in my stock! I'm going to do a sliding handle like on a vise so it always drops down out of harms way when close to the chuck. I may thin out the 1" plate if it looks too clunky. I also removed a lot of the excess material around the locking bolt so my plate is "inverted-T" shaped and I rounded all the corners with a 3/8 radius. Thanks for the link to the original idea! This solved a nagging problem in an elegant fashion.

Pushing on the left side of the slide to apply the clamp disengages the gib of the opposite side. An alternative is to mod the existing lock screw location. Put a ball brg in the screw hole that can be pushed onto the gib, drill & tap a hole in the top of the slide that will intersect with the ball just behind centre, put a point on a screw to push on the ball brg. Plug the original hole

An interesting approach. I didn’t have P.M. install my DRO so when I went to install mine I faced the same dilemma. I opted to still use the factory lock on the right side of the cross slide. I replaced the socket set screw with a hex head bolt cut short to sit close to the cross slide and machined an aluminum spacer from .50” stock with a .30” inch gap around the bolt. I used a .50” spacer on the reader mounting bracket to compensate. A relatively short swing with an open end wrench will tighten and loosen it. I have a piece of tape over the gap at the moment to keep the chips out but I’m going to make a little plug that I can set in there when I have some time (been busy with renovations for the past few months). It won’t interfere with using the follow rest but it’s not quite as convenient as your solution since it requires grabbing a wrench to use it. Time will tell how well it works.

I thought about doing the same thing. But I was concerned about the quill travel on the tail stock. There were a few projects where I felt like the quill was reaching its limit. I think I'm going to incorporate a stop into the follower rest next. Maybe my next video.

this is good stuff- my lathe is similar to the PM, and i have an extra screw on the gib adjustment that ive been using, but i like this holding idea better.
