It feels natural to a lot of beginners but trust me the peekaboo is something you should master first. PhillyShell gets people in a very defensive position (where youre not thinking about countering) where a number of hook combinations can devastate you.

I found my body naturally adopted this style when I sparred. Awareness of the lead foot in relation to the opponents lead foot helps with this style to gauge distance and when attacked which way I needed to dip/roll/slip/move.

I have no boxing experience, but I've been doing taekwondo for a decade. When I was an intermediate belt, my instructor told me that if I'm ever getting lit up by kicks during sparring, switch my stance to this. He never told me it was a boxing technique! Turns out a modified version is effective for deflecting consecutive kicks in WTF sparring, while giving a stance to counter with a roundhouse.
@zammerack7203
@zammerack7203 2 жыл бұрын
It all makes sense now. I did Muay Thai and was always told to keep my hands way up when dealing with legs so I can check kicks easier and not get my neck snapped by a nice roundhouse. I did fight against a TKD guy and he told me to change my stance because I'm leaving too much open. It worked against him but I tried it against a Muay Thai fighter and got kicked so hard in the neck I thought I was floating in space for a good minute.
@xcelentei
@xcelentei 2 жыл бұрын
@@zammerack7203 Yeah, there's a big difference depending on what you're defending against. Consecutive kicks you'll see from "leg-fencers" are aiming for contact, but not destruction since we wear armor and don't want to KO anyone. You can't "parry" a committed murderstroke to the neck with your arms; there's just too much weight behind the kick.

I have 3rd degree ITF black belt and Philly Shell is my go to defense when I’m tired of running around. I did boxing for a year. It was intimidating because of the close proximity and kept getting lit up. It was all peek a boo at first but I couldn’t operate that way because I’m used to bladed stance. Then I went away for a week to research boxing stances. Fell in love with shoulder roll because I’m naturally sparring that way anyway. Went back to my coach that I want to learn only this defense for a month. Did it everyday. Went sparring with same guys, they got hell trying to score points. Then I started working on the counter punches from the position. Very weird. But counter kicks from the position was fine. Today I still use it in my TKD sparrings and competitions

The Shell brings 2 main advantages, but also 2 disadvantages... What you gain is far better eyesight to see incoming punches, and you get to become almost immune to body shots because you get to wear your lead arm as armor across pretty much your entire body.... but you lose a lot a armor on the front side of your face with only a little shoulder to block with instead of a whole arm. You also lose positioning for a lot of counter shots with your lead hand.... it has strengths & weaknesses like any style.... its the fighter using the styles that make them... not the "styles" themselves...

Great presentation, I watched this vid a bunch of times, then spent a couple days using it on my double ender, pounding hard and rolling as it came back at me... Then a sparring session came up, it was truly amazing how effective it is. I love changing stances, orthodox then south paw, now with the Philly Shell, I enjoy also playing with another type of guard... I found the Philly Shell to be safer, yet at moments harder to become explosive, still it was good enough to get the opponent confused and wondering about what just hit him.... Thanx! Keep up the good work, Balkan Shipyards

I think the shell works best when you in the corner & on the ropes. When using it in the center ring. The blocks & parries are cool. But you need to have quick/good footwork. Because the posture you're in with the shell kinda stiffens you up & if you don't have good footwork with it your shell will look alot like Adrien Broners. If you notice he stands flat footed in the shell posture. But since his footwork isn't good he gets stuck when combos coming at him & he start getting caught & welled on. Not to mention he not throwing only looking to counter. If you look at Floyd & James Toney they uses a loose shell but they know how to move they feet with it

When i boxed as a hobbyist in highschool and in college, i never knew why but i defaulted to this stance as a tall guy. In a full sideways stance and liberal use of your bicycle to always be at the tip of your ranges, you could cover your head and body with your left while also disguising the body jab as a shoulder roll. Your right is also always cocked and ready to throw a power straight and you could defensively throw out right uppercuts into a standard guard leaving only a tiny opening and only on your terms.
