I’m an older fighter from the 60”s. Only boxed from the age of six - 14. However, our Coach was the best I ever seen, FRED STONER of GRACE HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN LOUISVILLE KY. Before ALI there was RUDELL STITCH , he drowned trying to save his best friend. We all were Golden Gloves Champions. Speed can defeat the Philly Shell, and many defenses . Great information, you just have to have knowledge and skills to incorporate the different types of boxing. Louisville, Ky had great boxing programs, basketball, football took us from the boxing world. What I learned from my days as a fighter saved my life in the streets and I boxed in THE AIR FORCE. My oldest brother was more of a brutal punisher , my other brother was a technical fighter that was too pretty to fight, I was a mixture of both! Had to learn how to fight different styles. PROUD FIGHTER! Keep teaching - love your work!

Hands down 🙌 the best explanation of Philly Shell on KZbin. Thank you, Sir. In my opinion the best advantage of having Philly Shell style is that you can get away with less footwork because it helps you stay in the pocket and go for counters.
@EtuMolden-nj8yk5 ай бұрын
It's biggest advantage is that you can generate power with the pre cocked right hand thats surprising for opponents that are close. Also the right hand for the eye of your opponent is virtually still.....for the first 8 inches of motion.

One thing i picked up on was coach saying you can raise your lead glove to catch a punch if you see it last second whilst in the philly shell, this isn't necessarily wrong but i would say generally it works the other way around, elbow and shoulder blocks are often used instinctively by all styles of boxer when they find their gloves out of position (because it is quicker to raise the elbow or shoulder than it is to retract the glove from its wandering position).

I think a lot of people feel that if they use the philly shell they’ll be possible to hit but it doesn’t work inside the pocket. Only at range & if they try to close the distance you’re going to have to clinch. Which imo is a huge part that nobody talks about. Great video though coach!

4:05 I learned this from sparring and using the jab+catch. If I’m bladed in stance and I’m catching I often land my jab and my sparring partner lands on my glove, when I’m more squared up I get hit more off my jab, it’s great as a shorter fighter as well.

Hi Jerry! The Philly Shell derived from the Old School Boxing Stance of Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Sugar Ray Robinson. Those are my go to guys for the best ever boxing stance and basic fundamentals ever. Charles used a lot of tools that are considered Philly Shell tools. Louis and Robinson did at times as well. I think predominantly the best boxers ever have the basic fundamentals of the Old School Boxing Stance. Which in turn makes them half a man, weight predominantly on the back foot. Rear hand placed in the front of the face, lead hand about shoulder level for the most part. Guys to watch with this Foundation are ALL TIME GREATS! Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis . Ezzard Charles Rocky Marciano, Charley Burley, George Benton, James Toney, Sugar Ray Leonard, Benny Leonard, Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Jersey Joe Walcott, Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Jr as a Middleweight! These guys had the Old School basic fundamentals and most of them used the Shell at times some used it more than others but regardless a lot of the components of it are in grained in the stance!

Why don’t opponents of this style just step outside the the left foot and push constantly to his left thereby virtually eliminating his right unless he turns in your direction of movement, which you would know in advance? I know most fighters don’t do this, but I don’t understand why they don’t. I do MMA and for me, I just move in and dump them in this position, but I am curious from a pure boxers point of view, why you just don’t always pressure left gaining a better angle and forcing them to turn? I am sure there must be a reason, but I don’t know it.

I don't know if you'll see this comment, but you told Danny to "bow" at 7:30, but isn't he just dipping? And if he dips like that, wouldn't he be very vulnerable to an overhand right? Or from southpaw position, a rear uppercut? It seems as if that movement is taking a big chance?
@elijah_yt232Ай бұрын
The bow isn’t supposed to be used in a stationary position. As you bow, you’re supposed to step back. That’s what Floyd Mayweather has mastered.

Unfortunately, the kids these days want to box this way before they even learn any other guard. They aren’t even comfortable with being hit and they’re trying to block punches with their lead shoulders. Mayweather didn’t use this guard as an amateur. This isn’t the only guard he uses and he also doesn’t use it against southpaws. I want to teach it to my amateurs but I feel like giving it to them too early may be a mistake. Good explanation of the benefits though.
