@@joemilo2710 No, I'm closer to the 80s era. I've seen a lot of movies from that era that I saw as a kid that really don't hold up. A big reason this film holds up is because it's set in a jungle setting and they are in military gear for 99% of the movie and they have military haircuts, which are timeless. Plus, the cinematography looks sharp and also the music is suspenseful horror, which again, they still do today.

I think it's important to recognize that the predator was honored to die at Dutch's hands. When he was mimicking Dutch at the end he was in his own way acknowledging Dutch as a worthy opponent. One could make the argument that the predator laughing in Billy's voice was a means of taunting him as a "last laugh" gesture but the reality is he was laughing because he got to meet a true warrior's death, something its species and culture revolves around. It would have been the highest honor any warrior achieved in their lifetime, rather than being taken by old age.

@@NemeanLion- As much as it's more soothing to hope that the younger generations have seen these movies Predator, Alien, etc. - Generation Z definitely has not seen these movies. It doesn't help that that generation kind of has to go out of there way to find reliable way to watch them, digital or otherwise. Gen Z's best bet of catching them is hopefully on a service like Netflix, which on the rare occasions that Netflix adds them to the catalog, they are only on there for a single rotation at a time (Such as one quarter of a year, then the movies may not appear again on the catalog for years). Gen Z might even have a hard time even HEARING of these movies, usually they might through a niche corner of youtube or other social media, and even less likely through conversation or recommendation of a previous generation in their family.

I read the novelization of Predator back in the day. The author provided an interesting insight into the minds of the characters. For example, the tracker Billy is actually a descendant of Native American shamans. His grandfather was the last practicing shaman of their line. That pouch on Billy’s neck was a gift from his grandfather to protect him in battle. Billy didn’t believe in their mysticism. But he kept his promise to his grandfather to always wear it. So when the Predator a creature from outside of our nature environment showed up, all of Billy’s latent mystic abilities kicked in. That’s why he was kinda zoned out in most of his scenes. He was trying to make sense of what he was experiencing. Hence him telling Pancho he was afraid. In other Predator movies they revisit how the presence of these alien hunters affects people with a strong mystic or spiritual background.

I do so love how well this film conveys its rules and then sticks to them. I also like that it doesn't feel the need to overbuild the Predator into something completely invincible and then wrangle complete nonsense in order to bypass that invincibility for a finale. It makes it feel more grounded that of course this flesh and blood creature isn't immune to bullets or getting crushed. Its playing by the same established rules as everything else it just has its own sets of skills and equipment that are more than enough to be a threat without going crazy with it. The story doesn't wind up overstuffed with extraneous exposition and just has this really solid foundation of giving just the enough information to be followed along with comfortably. It invites you to make educated guesses about how things will play out and lets that play into the tension. I find it holds up exceedingly well compared to most films that do that sort of action/horror sort of concept.

SO for some context, the Predator species is called the Yautja. They're a sapient race whose society is built around hunting. There is a LOT of lore around them, but most of it is established in books, so at the time this movie was released the only real lore that would have been relevant is that Yautja engage in a "coming of age" hunt, where unblooded hunters engage in what is basically a test. They hunt one of their most dangerous prey. (When this movie came out, the predator universe and alien universe were separate, so humans would be their main dangerous prey.) They try to match the type of weaponry employed by their prey, so when the guy stripped to only his knife, he was faced with only wristblades and probably gutted alive. They DO NOT leave their tech for sapient species to find, so if they fail a hunt, they activate what to them is a small explosive to remove all traces of Yautja tech. Fun facts from the expanded lore. Yautja females are much larger than the males, insanely aggressive, and will kill a mate who doesn't please them. Also, predator hair doesn't START in braids. Before maturity there is a ceremony where their normally thin strands of hair are braided into large, dense locks, in a process that is insanely painful and takes a long amount of time. ANY show of pain or emotion is met with the braids being undone and the process starting over, so the process can sometimes be literal days of pain. There are instances of humans being allowed into Yautja society, but they are very rare. the most famous is a woman nicknamed "Small Knife", who was blooded by one of the most respected Yautja in history, Broken Tusk. She was allowed all rights and honor bestowed upon Yautja hunters and warriors, and was highly respected. It's even implied she hooked up with multiple Yautja males, though her "large" mammary glands (In comparison to female Yautja) were offputting to some males.

The original design of the Predator was very different by another design studio and was played by Jean Claude Van Damme. Depending on who you talk to, Van Damme was fired for refusing to do a dangerous stunt, arguing with the producer, breaking the monster suit or not looking imposing enough. Afterwards Stan Winston was brought in to redesign the Predator from the ground up and we got the iconic design everyone now knows.

Great reaction. Nice intelligent analysis of the movie. You two are now my favorite reactors. First caught this while channel surfing on a Saturday night in the early 1990's, looking for a movie to go to sleep by. Missed the space scene but caught Arnold getting out of the chopper, meeting the general, and decided to watch (somehow had never heard of this movie at that time). Did not go to sleep until it was over. First thought it was the typical A.S. action movie, but something strange was going on . . . Think it was better having not seeing the space scene at the beginning. BTW carrying a mini-gun on a jungle mission like this is ridiculous. It needs a 24 volt battery to operate and fires over 100 pounds of ammo per minute. But so cool for this movie.
@corvus1970

I love this movie because it serves as a semi deconstruction of 80s action films as a whole. The first third of the movie is essentially the plot of any 80s action ensemble: a team of elite soldiers goes on a mission, kills a bunch of bad guys, spout a bunch of one liners, mission is successful, and the heroes are shown to be all but invincible. This movie then twists the entire premise on its head, by introducing the alien Hunter who takes down these elite soldiers one by one. Schwarzenegger, who is generally at least a physical match for anybody he ever faces in his other films, is shown to be no match for the predator. In the end only his wits save him, but when the smoke clears, we see he's not the same man. His entire team is dead, and he is essentially broken by the experience. Tremendous flick, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Great video! By the way, please look up "Predator the Musical" here on KZbin. I promise you, you won't be sorry. 😎

Fun fact... a lot of Special Forces are trained to stab between the ribs and into the lung/s check out the first wave of British Commandos sent to Normandy, they also used a special type of knife solely for this purpose. This is because you literally cannot make a sound once your lung has been punctuated. So while a lot of people (including myself) would think "stab them in the face or heart and kill them quickly" the enemy could still make a noise and give everyone away, so they are taught "stab between the 3rd and 4th rib" or something to that effect, you don't have to worry about noise and without medical treatment they'd die anyway.

bit of info: the studio execs looked at an early cut of the movie and told the director John McTiernan, that there wasnt enough "shooting" in the movie. McTiernan thought that was one of the dumbest things he'd ever heard, so he took all the actors out and got footage of them just shooting. McTiernan expected the suits to realize how stupid their request was, but when they saw it, they LOVED it and it became one of the standout scenes of any movie from the 80's.

The best way for me to tell Hawkins and Poncho apart is that Hawkins has glasses on. Poncho doesn't.

Kevin Peter Hall was about 7’ 2” tall and this whole movie was filmed in southern Mexico and the heat and humidity almost killed several of the crew and others. And the predictor suit was silicone rubber contraption

Fun fact: The prop minigun could only shoot three seconds at a time. One, it ran out of portable ammo that quick; and two, not even Jesse Ventura could keep a grip on it longer than that without its momentum violently throwing the shooter off to one side. Every scene with Ol' Painless going nuts is pieced together from max three second clips and world class sound mixing.

The Predator was played by Kevin Peter Hall who also played the Predator in 'Predator 2' and he also played Harry in 'Harry and the Henderson's'. Sadly he passed away shortly after making 'Predator 2'.
