Like a stereotypical action hero, Dutch was originally supposed to beat the Predator when they fought hand to hand, but it was Arnold who said that that would be ridiculous - "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man" - so the story was rewritten with the Predator beating the crap out Dutch and Dutch having use his wits (and a bit of luck) to prevail. It's not that often that a Hollywood star puts plot logic ahead of self glorification.

I agree with you that Hollywood often relies on stereotypes and outdated tropes when setting a story in South America, I was always under the impression that this story took place somewhere in Central America given the time period (late 70s to late 80s), and the heavy U.S. political and military involvement in the region, notably El Salvador and Honduras. Even after all the debate about the rain forests of South America, this wasn't even filmed there. This was in Mismaloya, on the West coast of Mexico. Apparently the conditions were still pretty awful for filming, with actors getting bitten by fire ants and such. Also, the helicopter pilot at the end (the black guy, at 27:08) was Kevin Peter Hall, the actor inside the suit who played the Predator. He was about 7 feet tall (213cm) but with the robotic Predator head on top of his, it made him 8 feet (244cm) tall.

13:48 "So the Predator can take any form?" In the book, the Predator was a shape shifter. I would touch an animal, absorb what it need to assume the animal's form, and the animal would die as a result. I remember there was sequence when the Predator was flying over the jungle in the form of a bird, and I thought "Either the Predator can shrink itself down to the size of a normal bird, or it's transformed itself into a freakishly huge bird" both of which seemed silly, so I'm glad the movie went with invisibility instead. I especially like that the invisibility isn't perfect.
@ComedicPause11 ай бұрын
The Predator is basically what we would consider a thrill-seeking big game hunter here on earth. On whatever planet the Predator is from (they flesh out the species a little more in the underrated sequel), he's probably a rich elite who wants to decorate his mansion with the skins and skulls of the most dangerous game. From the Predator's perspective, the most dangerous game is unfortunately humans. He took Billy's skull as a trophy because Billy tried to 1v1 him with only a machete once he realized that the Predator was just in this for the sport, and the Predator saw Billy as a worthy adversary. When the Predator sees that Dutch (Arnold) actually became a challenge for him, he decided to try and 1v1 Arnold w/o weapons because of pride. I really like how much they revealed about the creature and its motivations without force-feeding it to the audience through clunky dialogue or exposition. I think the director didn't even want the opening shot with the space ship in the film because he wanted the audience to be as confused as the troops were in the beginning, learning throughout the movie that they were being attacked by an ET, but the producers insisted on the space shot because they doubted the intelligence of the audience. Obligatory RIP Carl Weathers. That handshake with Schwarzenegger will forever be iconic in it's masculinity.

Bill duke was an amazing actor...juliard trained and amazing in American jiggolo! Billy was a complete wildman and had 2 guys for 24/7 security. Not for his protection but to keep him out of trouble!! The helicopter pilot is the Predator! They gave him one speaking line, so he could get a film credit and his sag card! There's many more predator films and Alien vs Predator! There's also a much larger tie in here. Aliens predators humans Replicants and Terminators are all related by a race of beings called Engineers, discussed in the movie Prometheus! In the 80-90s, Arnold was the absolute movie king of the one liners/memes! So many to repeat, but the most repeated line and meme in history is, " I'll be back!" Hard to believe this movie is almost 40 years old! A future governor of California, Minnesota and candidate for Kentucky in this!
