Focus V2 vs DragonFlite 95 (Part 2)

A bit more one on one today @ Lauderdale Canal, weather now a lot calmer.

I noticed sailing my focus v3 that it is really critical on backstay tension. And of course for the df95 you can find enough measurements to, as a novice, tune your boat correct for any wind and wave condition. In the focus v3 you have to learn more yourself. F.i. I fitted the foresail through the first deckeye instead of the second, as mentioned in the rigging setup. It sails just a tiny bit better that way. I think, the v3 has a lot of potential and in conditions I sail mostly, light wind, my v3 is very vast. In strong wind the forestay tension tends to get too loose. Backstay tension needs te be very high then. I am now trying to get the "backstay tension" of the foresail correct. (I suspect that is not the correct term)

Contrary to the final credits, I think the Focus has the 'A' sail rig fitted and the DF95 the smaller 'C'. The DF95 really performed well tacking upwind. A mate has a Focus V2 and it really needs a longer boom to bring in the main sail luff. It sails very smoothly though and holds an arrow straight tack. A lovely model that sails and looks great...👍

Not correct, the DF95 has its A sail fitted & the V2 Focus has a modified IOM C sail fitted.

Seems that my Focus 2 has difficulties to tack upwind in light wind, say 2mps. Would a wider/broader rudder help?

Nice videos guys. I bought a focus v3 recently and I like it very much. Its looks yours is a tiny bit faster then the df95. Is that right?

The Focus has a much larger sail area than a DF95 so under the right conditions it will be faster.

Is the Focus V2 good enough for a first boat for someone whos never going to race? Thanks

The Focus needs a bit of work to set it up correctly and a couple of components need changing to allow for it to be set up correctly but they are a nice looking boat that sails well after a bit of fiddling. The only yachts that work correctly out of the box so to speak are the DF 65 and DF 95.

If you can afford it go for the DF95, if no then be prepared to do some work on the Focus to get her sailing well.

Yes I agree with you DF 95 has impressive performance it is ok through price is twice compare with others
