There are many species of wildlife that live on the ranch and some are predator and some are prey. When the predators get hungry, some animals are easier to hunt than others and it's at that point that we have to step in and set things right.

Good morning! First off thanks for watching, I should be able to get to comments at some point today, but I thought I would answer a couple that keep popping up really quick. The fox den was found off our property, so the decision to relocate was made by them and yes there are many more predators that I didn't get a chance to get any video of. Bull snakes can be a big one, skunks, raccoons and even the very rare bear. It's always a treat to see the wildlife but some can do a lot of damage as well. Thanks everyone, keep commenting and I will get to them as I can.- Mike

Our Wyoming Life I woyld like to have a few Bull snakes for gopher control. The %$#@! Gophers are eating my fruit and shade tree roots. Used to have a few here but 2 floods took them away and brought in mice and roaches from the old Roswell Air Force Base. I prefer the Bull snakes as I have no livestock.

I would highly recommend investing in guard dogs. You can adopt a few and then have them specially trained to only go after wild predators and not livestock. Don’t go with one or else a pack of coyotes would tear it to shreds.

Mike get mealworms and give the chickens a handful for every 6 to 8 birds they will lay a little better I have noticed more eggs each week due to the high protein but most importantly the birds will follow you in the house long as you are holding the bag of mealworms I have went thru the exact problem lost 40 birds raccoons and fox I m still rebuilding the flock but this works good and you get more eggs

That was a funny joke, Mike. Reminds me of one I heard about 20 years ago... "Some people thought it was a miracle when Saint Francis suddenly appeared and hit the next pitch over the left field wall... but I think it was just a lucky swing." :D I think that's an old Jack Handey joke.

Mike, thanks for making this video. It's important for people to know the challenges predatory wildlife can impose on livestock producers. From coyotes, fox, and badgers in a hen house to mountain lions or other large carnivores on a calf or lamb crop, predators can have a major hit on a producer's bottom line. Thanks again for shining light on this subject.

Hey retired Firefighter/EMT turned VERY SMALL homesteader, LOL. I have to say I do NOT like it when some critter takes to dining on my chickens at night. BUT I DO UNDERSTAND (since I grew up in the wilds of Washington State) that critters will be critters. So when a critters makes it in my barn it becomes my job....🤔Hmmm NO my mission to out smart and out maneuver that critter. I have to say that over the years I have gotten rather good at it, although I believe I have to give the glory to God. I apricate your content and all the hard work you and your family do to provide it. And I for one REALLY APRICATE🤗😋🥰👍😉❤💕😍😁😘 ALL THE WORK no Hmm....ALL THE HARD REALLY HARD WORK you and yours do to provide food to our nation. THANK YOU AND OTHER HARD WORKING RANCHERS, AND FARMERS JUST LIKE YOU I for one would like to say not only thank you but................ May God Bless You and Yours PS: I think , no I know just how blessed you are to be living the life you are living. To be raising your children in the way you are raising them. I have been in well.... almost every State in the U.S.A. (Yes even interior Alaska and the smaller Islands of the Hawaii) I know that some days REALLY SUCK!!! and some are so cold you think your boots will freeze solid to the ground Yet others are so hot that you believe you might just burst into flames right then and there. BUT I bet you just would not trade your spot for much of anything???? And YOUR RIGHT TO FEEL THAT WAY!!! Don't EVER let anyone tell you different. Your life is as close to heaven and we can get on this planet. If I had the chance I would LOVE to see your place. It looks wonderful Sorry I don't comment much, I just ....Well it's a long story. the reason I ended up retiring from fighting fire. But it's a good one. Like I said thank you so much sir. Have a great day

Very true about fresh eggs. Also, the fact you let them free range feed instead of just giving them corn really helps the taste. We have a neighbor who shares their eggs with us. So much better than the store bought ones. Nice chicken run, BTW. Great way to get them used to the outside world with as little danger as possible.

Big cats are really awesome but very scary. One of those could tear you to shreds in the blink of an eye. Thats good that they trapped the fox for relocation. It kinda sucks to have to shoot things that you aren't going to eat. I figured out how to listen to your podcast yesterday on my computer. I don't think I can leave you a message unless I'm on a phone. Tell Erin I'm glad she liked my comment. I think it made me realize that your system of ranching and mother nature happens here too, just on a smaller scale. Even in Ct. LOL!

Wow.....we are going through the same thing with a raccon and some possums. We check nightly and early in thw morning and through the day as possible. It so good your wildlife service will relocate a fox. Our preditor control is of a more terminal nature. Traps just dont work. Its so awful to find the dead birds. Its the way of things though. The new chicks sure look good. God Bless your Wyoming Life 🤗

Hey Mike, happy Sunday. Thanks for the reality check. Some times folk get the idylic ahead of the reality. There's always a predator out there, somewhere. I don't deal with Foxes and my chickens. But aggressive ground squirrels, occasionally a coyote s and Ravens. And, well I deal with them aggressively. Ground Squirrels steal food and eggs and have been seen killing and dragging away pullets. Ravens steal and eat everything. Ok. I'm done ranting....thanks again for great content and insight.

One of the first years we moved to our farm from the city, a bear got into the barn. I had known they were on the mountain, and other farms had trail cam videos of them on their land not too far from us, but I'd never seen or heard one out in the open at our place. Then I went to the barn and found all the horses on high alert and refusing to come towards the barn, where they know breakfast is stored. I went in and the back door had the screwed in lock ripped off entirely, base and all, and all of the feed bins including the giant deep freezer had been opened and tipped over, and more than half of the food was gone. No way something like a coyote did that, and though I love seeing wild animals, I'm glad I didn't walk in to a narrow space with the bear still here.

In the Uk when I was a child my job was to get the hens in, not an easy job. One night some went under the hen hut thought they would be ok. Ah the food chain. I heard that some bears were a problem near you folks. Here in Texas, the coyotes are an issue, especially around calving time. The Rancher's tradition is to shoot them and then toss them atop the fence, so its not unusual to see a couple or three dead coyotes hanging over a farm road fence. I have sat out in the pasture all night with my rifle when a mare was ready to drop a foal...could hear the coyotes yipping near by, Once the foal is born, the threat is much minimized as they are pretty large at birth and the momma can protect them quite well. Glad you got that fox in a box. Terry - Justin Texas

When we had chickens I had only 9-12 but every night I would get them into a run with lettuce, watermelon or what ever in a bowl. They would come running. And I bought a gun for the fox. I never had to use it. We did scare the fox away but I had no remorse if I did have to use it.Or if I ran into town the chickens were keep in the run until I got home. Blessing Debby

AWESOME BLOSSOM 🌻 I've seen on some channels, people are making PET'S out of Foxes. Personally, I think that is just not a good thing to do. Wild is wild. BUT - My Grandmother had a pet skunk she would turn loose during the night to find and kill mice. That was 50 years ago before she knew better. LOL Rabies carrier.

I always have mixed feeling about predators. I’m fascinated by their cunningness, respectful of their sharp teeth, claws, etc... but they are beautiful animals. I’m pleased to know that extermination is not the first line of defense, although sometimes it is necessary. This video was very good. I’m always amazed at how much a rancher or farmer has to go through to provide food for his own family and more to a very uninformed, demanding society. Thank you for the insight. God bless you.

A black bear ripped into a small coop where my Mom was raising some replacement chickens, and killed 4 of the 10 late last year. Other than that, snakes stealing eggs has been the worst predator problem we have had over the past 5 years.

for my own sake of seeing them, i would like to have these animals around me. but for my animals sake im glad the only predators i have to worry about are raccoons, owls, and very very rarely a fox. in the however many years i have been here i have only seen 2-3 foxes....raccoons how ever, i feel i could catch one every night if i tried. i also have waaaayyy less chickens at 8-10 but every now and then i get up in the 20s-30s

My sister was always losing hens to a local hawk. We could actually see the hawks waiting in the trees nearby for us to leave so they could get the next serving. she finally had to cover her entire chicken yard with netting. I myself lost about a third of my hens to a couple of local dogs in just one morning. I layed for them the next week though and shot them both when they came onto the property looking for more killing.

Speaking of branding. There is a thing that rv'rs call "harvest host". When a wine company or an orchard is ready to harvest, they invite rv'rs to camp on their property and help with the harvest. The host gets free labor and the rv'rs get to experience the harvest. You should think about doing that when you have to brand or whatever else you need help doing. It's fun for both sets of people. Here is the website. harvesthosts.com

I wonder why you don't have donkeys? And why not some dogs? I know they don't go together very well. But I have both. My herding dog would do amazing with 5,000 acres! I don't really run him enough. I can see a border collie or a couple, doing amazing running that kind of distance. My dog is half Aussie, half blue heeler, and he is actually a pretty good shepherd dog for my chickens, though a Pyrenees might be better. I know...ya gotta feed them. Donkeys are enemies of dogs/foxes/coyotes. And they are really hardy. They do really well guarding the cows from coyotes. They do run the cows and calves if there is a pair. That isn't good. But there are ways to deal with it. I tend to keep my dairy cows with horns so they can have some protection. And I pull my dairy calves and bottle feed them in a protected area.

Found your predator video Mike, lol. Speaking of dogs, Mike, you should look into Livestock Guardian Dogs. There's a few breeds of them and they would work really well around the home, protecting your chickens and alerting you of any predators near by. You can't go wrong with having a dog at all. I once lost 10 chickens to my neighbors dogs, and had a huge coyote one time, the size of a German Shepherd, come onto our property and was looking to feast on our chickens we had in our chicken tractor. Ever since we gotten our dogs (Blue Heeler, Basset Hound/Lab Mix) we've had no problems with predators.
