Make sure you check the sources of your seeds. Many seed sellers are scammers selling mislabeled seed that sometimes isn't Nepenthes. A lot of actual Nepenthes seed for sale is illegally harvested from habitat, and could threaten endangered species. It's best to wait until you're able to produce your own seed, or maybe do so with another grower, in order to be sure that your seeds don't have ethically dubious origins.

Great video! How do you avoid the seeds becoming mouldy while trying to germinate?
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 7 жыл бұрын
We didn't get into that kind of thing because it's so dependent on your conditions. We don't have problems with mold because we have fans running all the time for air flow. A helpful tip from the video is to sterilize the media before you sow the seeds. If sterilization and good air flow still aren't enough, some people use weekly applications of a light solution of fungicide like Captan.
@Salsa_Souls
@Salsa_Souls 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. It's probably lack of air flow in my case then, I might open the top up a bit more and just keep it humid but with the air getting to it.

Thank you for the great advice. Where do I get milled sphagnum or is it this something I just throw into the blender? I used to have a source but that was years ago and they are gone now.
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 7 жыл бұрын
Our milled sphagnum is the byproduct of all of the dried long-fiber sphagnum that we use. We separate the dried, semi-compressed bales over a coarse screen, and the fine-material falls through. You can mill your own by either using a blender or rubbing it against a fine mesh screen.

Brilliant video! Is there any way of identifying male and female plants if they are not flowering? Also, do they only flower once per year? My male is producing its first flower spike after 2years ownership (late summer in Australia). Will have to seek out a female in the nurseries. Also, it really appreciated repotting up to a 25cm pot. How often should I repot into larger pot and what season?
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 3 жыл бұрын
There is currently no way to determine the sex of a Nepenthes until it flowers. Some flower continuously, others only flower every few years. We generally repot every 2 or 3 years when the plants are actively growing.

Love the video, very informative. One quick question I have a female Nepenthes that has had a fully opened flower for over a month now, I was wondering how long it’ll stay viable for?
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 3 жыл бұрын
It varies too much by plant and conditions to say for certain. As long as the flowers are sticky, producing nectar, and are fragrant, they should be viable. It's typically only a matter of a few days, though.

Great video! I just received a pod of nepenthes edwardsiana, jaquelineae and aristolochioides hybrid, do you think that coco coir with other aditives like perlite, peat, chiloe moss or coco husk is good for nepenthes seedling?
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you would use such a complex and coarse-sounding mix for seedlings. We have found that "finer" mixes are better than "coarser" ones. If the tiny first root doesn't find somewhere soft to penetrate, then the seedling will likely perish. Also, ingredients like coco coir and husk tend to be very salty unless you soak and rinse them like crazy. The fewer ingredients, the less likely it is that one of them has unexpected salt.
@emilienthevenin1
@emilienthevenin1 7 жыл бұрын
PredatoryPlants Thank's for your answer. Of course on the top of the coarser mix I would put a thin mix with coco coir and dead sphagnum. I thought that by doing it this way the little roots would have a good contact with the soil and the coarser mix would alow a very good oxygenation. I also thought that I would be able to keep this soil longer than a simple seedling mix. My main preocupation was about the salt and nutrients of coco. I think that the coir is good because the mark says that the ec is low and that they coco plantations are far of the sea but my coco husks make the water brown when I put it in...

I use petal Sphagnum for all of my mixes now, I live in New Zealand, so good quality sphagnum is easy to get hold of, Besgrow being the optimal brand of choice, I swear by it for anyone growing Venus & Sundews, petal sphagnum grade is the one to use, I propagate all my Venus flytraps & sundews Filiformis & hybrids, Binata & hybrids from flower stalk cuttings, with a 85%- 90% strike rate, mature plants in a fraction of the time as if you were to grow them from seed, cheers.

A very good video! What conditions are you using to germinate the seeds?
@PredatoryPlants
@PredatoryPlants 7 жыл бұрын
I don't want people to get too hung up on our specific growing conditions, because you don't need a greenhouse like ours for this to work. If you are successfully growing Nepenthes plants, then you probably have adequate conditions for seed germination. Err on the side of slightly warmer and more humid than the rest of your plants (you can use a dome or seran wrap over a seed pot) and you should be okay. The important part is fresh seeds and the correct soil/water.

Do you maybe mean the N. truncata? The difference in pod size once the ripening is finished actually indicates whether the cross was successful. The "small" pods were ones that we tried to pollinate with old pollen, so no seeds were produced.
