When I was a kid my parents took us to Myrtle Beach for vacation.... along the way we had a flat tire. We all got out and waited for my dad to change it.... I was wondering around on the side of the road that was near a field.... as I was walking around I realized there were hundreds and hundreds of these things growing in this field next to the road. The ground was spongy and there were mounds of moss. The plants were growing among tall weeds... I was floored by how many there were. I also noticed there were many sundews all around that were bright red and about the size of a quarter... there were so many you could hardly walk without stepping on them. This happened back in the 70's. Years later I went back to Myrtle Beach for a vacation and tried to find the spot (I knew it was near Conway, SC).... but for the most part the area had been developed into a golf course.... I was never able to find the spot and I doubt it even exist anymore.

dont you love it, the government jails or fines you if you take some from the wild, however its ok for someone to lay a suitcase of $$$ on the table to develop a golf course. Same is true with the marijuana push in the states. It was a horrible offense if caught selling or growing, and having a felony charge slapped on you, however down the road the same state that jailed you and wrecked your life determines its ok to sell due to the revenue it will receive......

Hey there! So I’m in la and my traps usually flourish and are doing very well actually! I just recently repotted one that outgrew it’s pot. However we are having a heatwave currently and yesterday was VERY hot. I came home today to see my it very wilted and all it’s traps flopped over. I rewatered & sprayed it well and the leaves and traps seem to be stiffening back up. But I don’t feel like I am out of the woods yet. Do you think it could be a bad repotting job or the bad heatwave? My other traps were fine. Maybe it was the combo of repotting and the heat?

This is very informative. I learnt by my mistakes some 50 years ago. I had these in my early teen years and they always died. After about 4 plants in as many years I dug one up and it had rotted. I knew then I was keeping them too wet, keep them moist, so I then watered them from the bottom. I had success after that and kept them a year or two, one lasted 4 years in an unheated greenhouse. I didn't know they produce bulblets.

I have 3 plants at the moment and I believe they are all of the dented variety, they aren't really red at all but have the short hairs, got 2 from the grocery store and 1 from a rare plant grower. I try to feed them once a week since they are inside but I've noticed when I feed one trap, all of the traps tend to close, not right away but they're often still closed a week to 2 weeks later. Is this normal? Am I overfeeding?

@pershop49503 жыл бұрын
they do fine in direct sun, and depending on your growing region, it could be as little as morning sun/afternoon bright shade or all day sun. your well water is also suspect. It may have many minerals that are not good for VFTs. the generally accepted source of water are rain, reverse osmosis water, or distilled water. Anything else, you'll have to experiment and learn how it affects your carnivorous plants, including well water or spring water.

@pershop49503 жыл бұрын
What you feel is too hot could be just fine for plants. You need to figure out what their growing conditions should be and go from there. What I mean by that is, if you have a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, maybe it's OK. If you have a spot that has all day sun, then it could be fine as well, if you put them in a tray of water and don't let it go dry. While each growing zone can have general directions, it's up to you to figure out what micro-climates or locations you have around your home and how to best support the plants you want to have.

@pershop49503 жыл бұрын
Any video can't discuss challenges of growing VFTs in every location. All it can do is provide general guidelines. It's up to you as the owner of the plants, to find what works in your region or micro-climate. Eg, many people are confused by how much sun or water a plant needs. That's because there is the general guidelines, and then there are the guidelines that works for some people in some area . Watering 2-3x a week isn't going to work as well as having a pot sit in a tray, if they weather or sun is really hot. And saying it can be in full sun in Wisconsin summer is different from full sun in Florida summer or in Arizona summer.

I had the opposite problem at the equator. Too much sun all year round with no easy way to hibernate... killed 2 of my plants before giving up

I just received my first plant. when and how often should I repot my plant and what is the best soil to use based on your experience? I hear so many different soil recommendations and options, including those you mentioned in this video. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Over the weekend i placed 2 orders I've sent an email and I tried calling the number on the website and nothing. Where did you go to order them or any info on how I can contact them. Please and thank you.

Emilio, I did not purchase my first two plants from them. I ordered mine on amazon, from Joel carnivorous plants. I too tried contacting predatory plants for info and got no answer.

JP27 I ordered from him, did he send a paper that tells you how to take care of them? When I got mine, it had a paper that show hows to take care of them.

The Dragon Queen: I just purchased my first VFT from these guys, my other traps were from another seller. They did send a care sheet, but it is just the basics. I was having issues with my traps but now they are thriving!

Could you do a video on how to give them a winter dormancy indoors? I've heard people put them in the fridge. I'm not sure quite how to do this.

I just ordered from you guy and my B52 is super small. Found huge reg Venus fly traps at Walmart for $7. Wish I received a b52 like the one your showing. Mine were only like 3/4 of an inch or smaller.

Ordered 1 b52 and 1 Dente. Both ordered as medium but came with plenty of medium & small traps. My first VFT order so that could be avg. As expected there was a few black traps. I’m not going to go all up in arms like most and claim it’s the sellers fault. Do your due diligence and research what to expect and the plants cycle. Followed potting instructions. Used distilled water and the provided moss which was plenty. I live in the west Texas desert so I’ve gotta keep an eye on its hydration. Getting them acclimated with 3hrs of sunlight outdoors. Currently 100 degrees, 10% humidity, and fingers crossed they are stout enough to handle it.

I ordered from Predatory Plants and was very impressed with the shipping! (From California to Central Texas) I'm a first time grower of venus flytrap so I don't' know everything but I have learned to plant then in tall planting containers. I first planted mine in 3in potters and they seemed to get too much water (the moss was ALWAYS wet). I've been a bit hesitant to leave them in the full Texas sun but have slowly been introducing them into it.... I've been watering them with rain water since we've been experiencing our tornado season and I've been collecting said rainwater. My plants have developed tiny little bumps on some leaves (not the trap parts) and wondered what those were - if anyone knows anything about that please let me know. I replanted them in some peat moss/decking sand in the mean time and put them in taller pots - I've ordered carnivourous potting soil so I hope to repot them in less than a week. They don't seem as vibrant as they were when I got them last month but that could be due to weather/ my feeding a few of the traps (all bugs from the back yard that I've partially killed - no mold or deadening of leaves so far from that) / leaves growing old/ weather changes .... I've tried to bring them in when it reaches below 60 degrees F. My only sign that I'm doing anything right is that there is definitely NEW leaves growing! So that's good! I know it can catch it's own food but I thought that after the stress of the new environment, I thought I'd help feed it a few times..... I have the B52 and the Dente variety. I'd hate to accidentally kill them because I don't know what I'm doing - I'm trying to research as much as I can but there doesn't seem to be that much information online. OVERALL, PREDATORY PLANTS IS COMPLETELY WORTH ORDERING FROM! BOTH OF MY PLANTS WERE WORTH NEARLY $20 (EXPENSIVE BUT THEY WERE IN BETTER HEALTH THAN THE $5 PLANT FROM LOWE'S (duh). QUICK SHIPPING! GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! I will contact them to see if they can give any advice on my plants if they don't improve with the new soil).

This is my second vft and I bought it from a Master Garden Show. He had some good looking ones for display but the ones for sale were small. Some little heads are black. I have kept it in a water base and in the sun. It's still a little cool in Georgia at night. I haven't tried to feed it but some heads are closed. Thankyou for your videos because the guy wasn't prepared to give much info. He didn't have cards printed or instructions for keeping these guys alive. Yours look so much better. I'm putting mine in the back yard close by the chicken coop and run. Lots of flies, different sizes. I'm hoping that the vft is not dormant. I will continue to follow you for more info.

Can you tell me what size pot they prefer? Would they rather be kinda cramped? Or do they need good amount of room to sprawl & stretch out? Thanks Appreciate the videos man

Can you propagate these plants via cuttings?
@REEE-ui4cy3 жыл бұрын
yes you can but its hard to propagate from leaf cutting its much better to propagate from flower cuttinggs from the plant

@Predatoryplants Do cloned vfts require different care then ones grown in the wild? I recently purchased a new dente clone. I was wondering if I should put her outside with my other vfts.
