I grew up learning Calvin, Luther, and the lot... but I never understood why God would need to send His own Son to die for those who were predestined to salvation via irresistible grace. Not to mention the holy scriptures, that by their very nature offer many disputations to this doctrine.

Romans Chapter 11: In its New Covenant context... There is no Plan B of salvation outside of the New Covenant Church in this passage. Plan A is found in verses 23 and 24. In Romans 1:16 Paul said the Gospel was taken "first" to the Jews. This time period can be found in Matt. 10:5-7, and Acts 10:36-38, and Gal. 1:14-18. Many try to claim God never gave the Jews a chance to accept Christ, so there must be some Plan B of salvation before or during the Second Coming of Christ. Romans 1:16 proves they are wrong, since Paul said the Gospel went "first" to the Jews. Many ignore the fact that Peter addressed the crowd as "men of Judea", and as "men of Israel", and as "all the house of Israel" on the Day of Pentecost, when about 3,000 Israelites accepted the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. The Gentiles were not grafted in until several years later. This passage proves Paul was right about the Gospel being taken "first" to the Jews. Were all of the Israelites "partially" hardened in Romans 11, or were part hardened and another part were not hardened? The answer is found in the "remnant" of Romans 11:5. Paul reveals two different groups of Israelites in Romans 9:6-8. There is an Israel of the promise, and an Israel of the flesh. This is part of the context of Romans 11. Paul speaks about the "remnant" of Israel in Romans 9:27. This is also part of the context of Romans 11. Paul starts Romans 11 with two different groups of Israelites. In verse one Paul reveals he is still an Israelite, even after his conversion. Then Paul refers to two different groups of Israelites during the time of Elijah. There were the Baal worshippers, and there was the faithful "remnant". In verse five Paul says there is also a faithful "remnant" of Israelites during his time. This must be the Israelites who have accepted Christ, as on the Day of Pentecost. Paul uses the two olive trees as a symbol of the New Covenant Church made up of believing Israelites, and believing Gentiles grafted together into the same tree. The unbelieving Israelites have been broken off but can be grafted back in through faith in Christ in verses 23-24. Verse 26 is the problem for many modern Christians. What does the verse actually say, and how is it changed by many in the modern Church. I have heard two of our nations famous preachers say the following. "And then all Israel will be saved..." I have heard another say the following. "And all Israel will be saved..." What does God's Word, recorded by the Apostle Paul actually say? Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: The English word "so" is translated from the Greek word "houto", which is an adverb of manner, instead of an adverb of timing. Some have changed the word from "so" to "then", in order to change the meaning of the verse. How will all of the "remnant" of Israel from Romans 9:27 be saved? The answer is found in the verses that precede verse 26 and are found below. Rom 11:23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. Rom 11:24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? Paul quoted from the OT in referring to the Deliverer coming out of Sion to pay for sin. Did this happen at Calvary, or will Jesus die again for His people in the future? Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. Verse 28 can only be understood by looking at how Paul started the passage. He started with two different groups of Israelites and he ends the passage in the same way. There are two different groups of "they" in verse 28. One group of "they" reject Christ and are the enemies of God, and another group of "they" are the election which accept Christ through hearing the Gospel and faith. Rom 11:28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. Based on Luke 21:24b-28, the times of the Gentiles comes to fullness at the Second Coming of Christ. This agrees with what Paul said in Romans 1:16 about the Gospel going “first” to the Jews.

Thank you, Pastor Gary, for explaining the sovereignty/choice issue. After I became a Christian, I went to a Calvinist church, but couldn't buy the predestination "theory" because it didn't fit in with John 3:16...."whosoever believith in me shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life." Then I read about Armeniansm, and God giving us choice, and got to the middle like you preached, and came to the belief that because our sovereign God had no desire that we would be like a "Chatty Cathy Doll" saying "I love you, God" every time He pulled the string on our neck, or pushed our buttons, but would love Him by choosing to love Him with our heart, soul and mind and strength, that He gave us the amazing ability to make our own choices. All of us who go to heaven go there because we chose to believe that Jesus died for our sins and we choose repent for our sins, to follow Him, and love Him and seek to live for Him. Those who have chosen to refuse to believe that they are sinners, and they don't need Jesus, choose their own eternal destiny, which is the place of total separation from God and all that He is: there is no light, no love, no mercy, no joy, no happiness, no good, no fellowship, no comfort, no peace, no beauty, no refreshing, no rest. All the wonderful things we enjoy, often without realizing they are gifts from God, will be gone forever. Thank you, Lord, for sending Your beloved Son to suffer the punishment we deserve, and to shed His blood and die on the cross for our sins. He died and then rose again to make the way for us to come back to You, God, after being separated from You because of the ugliness and awfullness of our sin. Thank you!

I agree with those who don't follow either Calvinist or Arminian theology, but being a new believer I learned a lot by reading books about Christianity written by various authors and with different views and studying how their teachings line up with God's word, His love, mercy, justice and righteousness. I was baptized at Calvary Chapel, Bellflower, CA. I was saved at a non denominational church in Orange County, CA, but even as a baby Christian, I knew that they were very Ken Copland-ish, so I had to move on. Fortunately, the Holy Spirit led me to Calvary Chapel and it was there where I became born again! Then I accepted my full commitment to Christ, and I stepped into the water to be baptized. This was in 1989, and I had the blessing of going to Orange County (Costa Mesa, I think?) once a year to what was called Harvest where many of the "names" who represent the early foundation of Calvary Chapel stood on the stage and gave their testimonies, and encouraged everyone to come to Christ and to grow strong in faith. I never personally met any of them, including Chuck Smith who was also there. But I had never realized how large the umbrella was until I attended those events. I was a stubborn 39 when I came to The Lord. I'm now a willing 75 year old widow who is looking up, every day, longing for His appearing. God bless you.

Oh the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out (Romans 11:33) The Bible says WHOM He foreknew He also did predestinate (not WHAT He foreknew, i.e that they would believe in Jesus). In Jeremiah 1:5 God says: I knew you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart for me before you were born. In my thirty years as a believer in Jesus I have hardly seen anyone show an interest in salvation. That tells me that God has to instill it by His grace and mercy. I am hoping for that for all those I am praying for. I heard a true story of a Christian pastor in Wales who prayed for all his six children to be saved and watched them grow up into adults. He died without seeing any of them come to faith. But now every one of them is a believer, along with all their children and grandchildren - thirty-six in number.

@michelleinchristalone27694 ай бұрын
It is the opposite of what you think: It’s the Arminian view that God’s hands are somehow bound and that WE must choose that causes stress and doubt and creates a ‘flower petal gospel’ (He loves, me. He loves me not). For instance, how and why do you pray for your fallen family, children, neighbors, coworkers, etc if in fact, God is not sovereign over their salvation? In their fallen state, do they have to find it within themselves to work up in their ‘free will’ to be smarter, more holy, more savvy than the unregenerate guy next door? Is that what separates you from the unsaved guy next door? And furthermore, if you had to boot-strap your own salvation, it would necessarily follow that you must then keep in a right standing before God by your efforts as well. How did all that work for ethnic Israel??? Are we any different? The truth is, there is no peace or sure hope in a God that is not completely sovereign over salvation and all things. You don’t have to COMPREHEND all of God and His ways, but we can certainly APPREHEND the truths contained in His Word. We don’t pit this verse against that verse but instead rely on the analogy of faith and of scripture to help us interpret difficult passages. Those, like myself who hold to the Doctrines of Grace do indeed understand the mystery of Divine Concurrence: that God is sovereign AND man is responsible. The difference between us and Gary is that when we say God is sovereign, we mean utterly. Unregenerate humans will go to Hell not because they didn’t hear of Christ, but for their high-handed sin against God. So when Gary jokingly relates the story of the person who doesn’t know if their elect - he was part right when he said, “repent and believe! Good. Now you’re elect!” What he doesn’t teach is that the whosoevers are those whom God has given a new heart TO repent and believe. Regeneration (John 3) precedes faith. Our very repentance and faith, a true and heartfelt act, is a gift of God who has sovereignly replaced our heart of stone with a heart of flesh so we come to see the holiness of God, the poverty of our sin, and the beauty of the only Savior Jesus Christ our Lord. Salvation is of the Lord.

Thank you so much for this sermon. I am 65 and years ago I heard about Calvinism and Armenianism. Being someone that studies the word and considering myself a Berean who likes to know truth, this subject really confused me. I would read a book about Calvinism and it would make sense, but John 3:16 kept coming back to show me that Calvinism just couldn’t be completely correct. Your sermon just confirmed exactly what I believe and I love the way that you say I don’t follow Calvin or Armenia but Jesus Christ only. Thank you so very much again.
@DaviGouveadosSantos5 ай бұрын
I’m exactly like you. I grew up and was raised in an Armenian community. However, I noticed that I could be perfect, but it would be impossible to be saved by my acts. At some point, predestination made me feel forgiven, and that made me love the gospel even more. My desire to respond to this love was by living in a way that testified to His grace. But, even understanding His sovereignty, I felt bad about being elected while others were not but I can't see to be saved by my own merit anymore as well. I've just decided not to thing about it and keeping spread His love believing that everyone could reach him as they heard his voice.

It seems the man who said “I chose Jesus” is the one who is proud. The one who in retrospect, looks back at their state before regeneration and acknowledges their inability and poverty, knowing that only God by Himself and for Himself could have regenerated them, is the one who has laid down pride and sense of self, giving all glory to God and not keeping any portions piece, or aspect of their salvation in Christ for themself. Salvation from predestination to glorification is all and only of the Lord. When you realize this, you will truly live a life of grateful and worshipful gratitude to the only God and Lord, the only Savior Jesus Christ and not hold out any boasting for yourself.

It seems strange that people who know the Scripture, that before conversion, we are dead spiritually without hope - that a person who is DEAD can make any positive movement towards God. I believe that our greatest hope lies with the sovereign Lord who does all things well, rather than hope in a dead man’s ability to make a choice that he is unable and unwilling to make.

Amen! Exactly. Those of us who were saved by the grace and mercy of God are grateful that He did for us what we could not. He opened our eyes to realize our abject poverty and sin before His Holiness and our need for Christ. Only by knowing that God alone is the cause of our salvation and our keeping, will we give Him ALL glory knowing that we did not, and could not do it in and of ourselves. It makes me concerned for Arminian brethren who profess Christ as we do but seem to think they had a part to play.

And both of those theological systems are wrong, partly because they share the same foundational error, the doctrine of election. Both Arminians and Calvinists believe God elects some people and not others, they just differ on how he chooses. But Jesus and Paul were explicitly teaching that all people were chosen. It’s horrendous how bad Calvin and Arminians got it wrong.

It’s all a trap discussion. God is the beginning and the end so he knows what choices we will make before we make them. Lamentations 3:37 is the written word and it is not refutable. And he also gives us free will. He does both. So both Calvin and Armenian are true at the same time.

Gary is a great teacher, and I offer this feedback with grace. While he mentioned maintaining balance between views, the way he addressed Calvinism and Arminianism seemed to lean heavily toward one side. Early on, he spoke about not belonging to any specific camp, and emphasized the importance of not reducing God to our limited understanding, which I agree with. However, his later comments, especially when made in a lighthearted or joking manner about those with different views, felt more like passive criticism. If the goal was balance, it would have been better to present both perspectives fairly and leave it at that, keeping unity in mind. As Spurgeon wisely said, Calvinism and Arminianism are 'like two parallel lines on earth that intersect in heaven.' Presenting the issue in this way could have promoted better understanding and maintained fellowship.

I have listened to John MacArthur sermon on “Doctrine of Election” John 3:1-21 and John says we have a responsibility to believe and God Sovereignty … and it’s hard to reconcile them … just believe
@oldsoul84295 ай бұрын
God is either fully sovereign, or he isn't. We'll never fully understand this subject on this side of eternity.
@tinadehart35265 ай бұрын
Exactly. So my conclusion of this is that he is also sovereign over who is saved. I had to research this myself. If you look up predestined, chosen, foreknown it is very clear to me that God make the choice not us. Jesus also says he will not lose or reject those who THE FATHER SENDS ME. There’s not really any way to interpret that except God is the one who chooses. We can’t be saved without the Holy Spirit. Who does everyone think the Holy Spirit is sent by. I also think that people can reject it and are still responsible for that choice. As with many things in God’s word why do we think we have the right to question who God chooses? We don’t know everything and we never will until we go home. God chose the Jews then why is it so difficult to think he chooses believers. God is sovereign over EVERYTHING salvation included. I listen to John MacArthur almost every day and he is better at explaining this than I can but I totally agree with his biblical explanation.

@@tinadehart3526 to some, God extends grace and mercy. To others, he extends justice. God is righteous and holy in both cases. God's sovereignty is on every page of his Holy scripture; it's undeniable. Like Nicodemus, we struggle with the concept of salvation through regeneration (the new birth), and we do not know where the wind (Holy Spirit) blows. If my salvation hinged on my ability to overcome my own depravity and choose a holy God without God's help, I would never be saved. Jesus told his disciples directly: "you did not choose me; I chose you." It's not our burden to understand it fully, but to proclaim salvation in King Jesus for the repentance of sins to every creature and leave the rest to God. Amen, and God bless, sister!!! Edit: grammar

John 6:44. God draws NOT; Jesus saves NOT. Unless Jesus sees the work of God, the Father, in us when God draws us to Him, Jesus will not save us.

@@oldsoul8429 Penalty flag on the “I chose you verse.” It has nothing to do with salvation, but about Jesus choosing specific disciples. As the video implicates, we should be cautious on assessing what the Scriptures SEEM to say.
@oldsoul84294 ай бұрын
@@jonathandavid9720 I completely agree that the context of that specific verse applies directly to Jesus choosing his disciples and not to us, and I understand how my lack of expounding leaves my point a little ambiguous. Thank you for pointing that out. I referenced that verse as a picture of God's ultimate sovereignty. Jesus invited these men to follow him and they accepted, yet he tells them that (ultimately) they did not choose to follow Jesus, rather Jesus chose them as followers. The scripture emphatically says "nobody comes to Jesus unless the Father draws them..." God chooses to draw some, and he chooses not to draw others. He is sovereign, and it is arguably heretical to reduce God to some kind of fortune-teller who can merely see the future (I'm not implying this is your view, just preemptively refuting the common interpretation of predestination as 'God looked down the corridors of time and saw that little Tommy would choose Jesus.' I highly recommend John Owen's 'The Death of Death in the Death of Christ.' He does a great job of explaining our free will in the context of God's ultimate sovereignty. That said, I think these theological discussions are healthy for believes to engage in and I'm glad you commented! God bless, brother!

Gary I believe the Lord told me when I was trying to figure him out he said my ways are higher than your ways not human where we can find out who he is. God is the Lord of Lord king of Kings, first and last but beginning to the end I’m just saying he says the Lord my ways are higher than your ways stop. I hope that helps.🙏

I always tell people I am neither a Calvinist nor an Arminian. I don’t align myself to a man made system of understanding God. His ways are not our ways, and the total of Him is past finding out, at least on this side of eternity. It’s an injustice to God and His perfect character to align at all with any man made system that boxes a finite God into a man made mold. That’s not who God is! It falls so short that it’s not even remotely plausible for me to consider myself any of those, either in part or in whole. So when someone asks me which one, I say neither; and that I am a Biblicist. Only the Bible has it right.

Live real life in the Lord Jesus Christ. Don't get entangled in the Word and numerless interpretations thereof. Denominations. Cults. Living experience with goodness and might and faithfulness of the Lord God is what saves us , not debates who is right and who is wrong.

Paul's letter to the Ephesians clarifies this in relation to personal salvation: "God’s Sovereign Election … he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will ." (Eph. 1:4-5 NKJV). So, election is about Israel. But it is also about the predestined plan of God for the salvation of those who are in Christ.

What is the will of man naturally bent towards? In what condition does the will exist? Starting at the point before salvation, how do spiritually dead individuals “choose” God ? Or are we not all born in Adam? If not, then I guess we can just freely choose whatever we want without any outside influence or predetermined push. Do lions choose meat or is that in their nature?
@tinadehart35265 ай бұрын
Exactly. We will NEVER willfully choose to walk away from our sin. It’s Gods work and he chooses. Sorry but it’s pretty clear and I know that makes many people angry. This is called pride because it allows you to think you were responsible for making this choice. Sorry but you’re not!
