Best explanation I've ever seen of how to calculate barrel wear for yourself.

Thank you very much for making this video. I am an old man, but I learned a lot from this video. I finally understand exactly why my 6.5 CM barrels will have a much shorter life span than my other barrels. Again, thank you for making this video.

What about barrel material, what's is made out of? How much affect do we realistically see with regards to that variable?

Wouldn’t a second factor with a barrel be not shooting it repeatedly so hot that you could brand cattle with it

So what elk hunting cartridges offer the longest barrel life? I know 308 is on that list. But are there others, and do they offer a longer life than the 308?
@troopcom4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard the opposite. I’ve heard the sharper the shoulder angle, ie ackley, the longer the barrel life. Idk
@gunfather834 жыл бұрын
No that's definitely not the case. When the shoulder angle is sharper it directs the burned and unburned power directly on the throat of the rifling which is where the barrel wears out first.

GunFather Precision so a 260 should get better barrel life than the 6.5 Creedmoor, correct? I’m seriously thinking about a 6.5x55 Swede on my savage 110 long action
@gunfather834 жыл бұрын
@@troopcom I'm honestly not sure about the 260rem barrel life. I would imagine it would have a longer life because of the shoulder angle but at the same time its slightly more overbore than the 6.5cm because it has a slightly larger powder capacity. So I honestly cant say for curtain. The 6.5 x 55 sweed is an awesome cartridge. I do have some experience with it and I am a fan.

does a .308 last much longer than a 6.5 creedmore?
@gunfather834 жыл бұрын
Yes significantly longer. Like double the barrel life

@@gunfather83 so i wanna get into prs on the cheap, would is be smarter to run my 6.5 savage and replace the rifle/barrel in 1 season or get a .308 ruger American

@@gunfather83 what about a 308 vs 6.5 grendal?

Would it help a barrel much to not load up to max load? Or not using a hotter powder (yea actual burning temperature)? Thanks for any input. Great info on your channel! Cheers
@Jewelrymaker4 жыл бұрын
Are we still talking thousands of rounds of an overbored or high angled round or hundreds?
@gunfather834 жыл бұрын
If its something crazy overbore like a 408 Chey Tac with a sharp angle its typically going to be 700 or 800 rounds but something slightly overbore like my 7 saum with a 30°shoulder it should last 2000 rounds. That all also depends on how fast your shooting. Obviously if your shooting prs comps and burning 10 or 15 rounds down the tube in rapid succession over and over its going to wear much faster than if your spacing your shots out and never really get the bore up to maximum temperatures

Lol barrels are cheap it's like tires on a truck there expendable.... I build a custom 243 custom 28 nosler custom 26 custom 338 edge custom 300 norma mag with 35 deg shoulder. I spend 750-1200$a barrel that's what maybe 2 days income at most.

Some people like the idea of not having to replace major components of a rifle. Some people like to make up a load, set their OAL, and not have to verify every couple hundred rounds that the lands haven't moved too much. It's also difficult to be sentimental about a rifle which changes all the time.
@stephenferguson63632 жыл бұрын
@Philly Cheese Take very true but rifles are tools to me to be used and upgraded, replaced ect. Barrels are like car tires they wear out and you put a new set on if people care that much about barrel wear use a less hot chambering
@ratherbefishing42252 жыл бұрын
While a $1000 barrel sounds like a lot of money to me, I have to agree. A thousand rounds of hand loaded ammo in a big mag cartridge costs a lot more than that and if I’ve had the time to shoot that much I’ll happily screw in a new barrel and do it again

I'm about to buy a BLR and from what I've seen the barrels are usually only replaced with an entirely new receiver, so it matters to me

How long can i shoot a .223 if i shoot about 25 rounds in a weekend?
@davidmccormick74192 жыл бұрын
with a barrel life of 15k rounds you would be able to shoot for ~11.5 years at 25 rounds a week. so longer than the rifle is going to be your primary arm if you buy them like i do.

Depends on what accuracy you want and what the barrel material is. I have heard precision completion are only looking at 3000 round at the most. If you are just pinking and don't care about accuracy then why ever replace it?
