so glad I googled PredniSONE - I was diagnosed with acute bronchitis - coughing like crazy, the nurse said mostly likely it's bronchitis but could be allergies - our season in Northern Va. is bursting forth with pollen and fine organic particulates. I am always deeply skeptical about respiratory medications - I am sensitive to them somehow, and will be in a world of insanity at night when I'm trying to sleep at night. There is absolutely no dosage guidance on the box, in the nurse practitioner directives, and in that insert that the box refers to. Some thing just didn't look right to me about it - and they are tiny little pills - I'm sure pack a big punch. Thankfully I saw this video and I am absolutely tossing them in the trash - phew (glad I didn't have to put myself through that). Thank you Dr. Megan - I appreciate you!

What did you do to get better? To get over the constant hacking cough?? My son is going through the exact same thing. I picked up the prescribed prednisone from the pharmacy, but have not given it to him.... What CAN help? Just allergy medicine maybe

A Prednisone Warrior just asked: Just listen to your awesome prednisone video. I was prescribed 4mg prednisone for bronchitis. I have just taken one dose and then saw your video. Can I just stop now after one dose? Here's what I told her: Yes, you can probably stop after just one dose. Definitely discuss with your doctor if you have any questions.

As someone with asthma with a prescribed nebulizer prednisone is a life saver. That with the DuoNeb Rx just works for me. Also, from several asthma doctors, the problem is people don't take a high enough dose to attack the problem. This is referred to as a 'Step Down Approach' so by the 7th day you're barely taking any prednisone to minimize any possible withdrawal Would the Step Down Approach work for someone without asthma? Maybe, maybe not. But the continuos small dosage Rx never did help me either.

Without asthma, there's little evidence showing prednisone helps.

I'm suffering right now with bronchitis, I've started taking NAC and it seems to help the mucus thin out a bit. Thanks for the information I wish I could use this for My CEU's pharm tech here.

Thank you for this. So helpful and reassuring. I'm sitting here now after day 4 of a 7 day course of Prednisolone(7X5mg daily) but have not and will not continue with them today after encountering unpleasant ummm "side effects" I guess you could call them. Nothing too dramatic thankfully, but the fact the pharmacist gave me this little brown plastic tube with a sticker on it with the details without any typical accompanying paperwork that outlines the side effects, common, not common, rare etc... ya I just didn't like that from the start with a medicine I was taking for the first time, especially as I also suffer from GERD and take a PPI daily for that which actually works along with a healthy lifestyle and some sensible eating patterns etc. So, this viral infection hit me hard in the early hours of last Sunday morning. It actually reminded me very much of that time I contracted Covid which I suffered badly from when I had it. There was a few signs the previous days but they were more stomach pains and GERD in nature so I thought nothing much about it and of course, a bad GERD attack can cause a chronic cough, sinus problems, inflamed esophagus and aggravate the lungs into respiratory issues, made worse when laying down kinda like tipping a bottle of acid over with no lid on the top which makes helpful solutions and recovery such as the act of going to be and sleeping or resting and non-runner... just a viscous cycle but as it turns out, this appears to be a viral infection like bronchitis. Obviously, as will be the case for most suffers, there's a real concern when hit hard that quickly and my temps went to 39(102.2), dizzy, weak, shivers, headache, very painful to breath deeply with a sharp very painful stabbing type of cough, bouts of a painful stomach and urge to vomit but never did. Ya, as you sit there in bed feeling on the brink of the scales tipping against you, thoughts of "This could be pneumonia!" and other catastrophic scenarios that need imminent addressing lol(Hypochondria much?)! Anyway, did a Covid test Monday, was negative, good, and arranged a callback from the doctor who after much chatting prescribed these steroids. Have they worked? I don't think so. What I can say is my temperatures have since dropped back down to around normalish levels which is nice and a lot of those other complaints have subsided or gone. What remains now(Thursday) is a very painful cough, a slightly raised temp, and bringing up a lot of green phlegm, especially in the morning which makes me wonder if it's actually become a bacterial infection requiring anti-biotics at this point(here we go again! 🤭). Now, did the steroids help me in any way? Well, when I was at my worst, Sunday to Tuesday, what brought my temperatures down and eased the pains listed above, was actually 1000mg of Paracetamol with 16mg Codeine phosphate hemihydrate. As not to to lean too heavily on that Paracetamol/Codeine combo, since I was suffering really bad and was taking them every 4-5 hrs, I decided on Tuesday to switch to Ibuprofen, just for the pain, and some of the other symptoms had dissipated so I just didn't want to keep taking Codeine which can become addictive. Here's where a noticeable problem with our new buddy Prednisolone became obvious. Remember, I suffer from GERD, not badly, but it's still something I need to take one 20mg of Pantoprozol a day for a "normal" life, whatever that is lol. Anyway, it became clear during Wednesday that after appearing to be on the slow road to recovery, my stomach, mood, and at times even my concentration and awareness were now starting to hit problems. So I went online just to see if there was any possible compatibility issues taking Pred and Ibuprofen, and pretty quickly the first several sites were all highlighting that these should not be taken together and cause gastro problems and even potentially fatal ones where a hole forms in the stomach and intestines or something like that. Not exactly what you want to read let alone as a GERD sufferer! 🙄 Anyway. TLDR - No, I didn't notice any help from 3 days on these steroids. I did certainly notice adverse side effects from them however, massively so when I decided to take Ibuprofen with them(on day 3) and so I'm not going to continue with them. I never had any difficulty breathing apart from the pain of the act of breathing, but there was no shortness of breath or anything and airways were always clear apart from a couple of nights where my nose partially blocked, nothing unusual for some flu-like viral infection sort of thing. I still have a nasty painful cough and bringing up green phlegm so... might need antibiotics if that's now a bacterial infection lol.... sigh... but ya, I don't see anything that steroids would help with and arguably never did. I can understand why the doctor(not my regular doctor though) prescribed them, since antibiotics are no use for a viral infection, BUT, I think maybe for many people suffering from the shock of an aggressive or sudden viral infection, just hearing some reassuring words of comfort and explanations about what's happening to your body and how you can improve and X Y and Z etc, would be far more helpful than prescribing something that most likely is not going to help and has a pretty high chance of causing a patient more harm than good. Well, that's me done(though hopefully not in that way! lol!). Thanks for reading, and thank you Dr. Megan for your very helpful upload.

I'm no pharmacist I'm actually a anesthesia provider and I can tell you that you are factually wrong. Acute respiratory compromise is a leading reason to use bronchodilators and steroids
@PrednisonePharmacist3 ай бұрын
If someone is truly in an acute situation, then yes, you’re correct. But far too often, it’s a chronic cough, or the respiratory situation isn’t full blown compromise, and the steroids are just a bandaid offering no help and lots of hurt.

Yeah, but some bronchitis are due to BACTERIA not virus. Y'all prefer people to suffer and develop pneumonia and die, than try to treat them with antibiotics and other solutions

Every summer I get bronchitis that lasts for months to the point that my ribs hurt from coughing constantly. The ONLY thing that stops it, and I mean stops it within a day or two, is Prednisone, so, with all due respect, you are wrong.
@PrednisonePharmacistАй бұрын
Glad to hear it helps you! If you have a history of it working, that’s great. However, for most people with bronchitis, prednisone won’t do anything good and will almost definitely cause side effects. Has anyone checked whether your bronchitis is more than it seems? Asthma?
