I was 31 and working as a nurse in an HIV ward in London at the height of the AIDS crisis. A weird, tragic, incredible, confusing time in my life. I love this song and it tears my heart out.

He was always great but the band was so uncool. The 80s was all about image and cool and they didn't have any. Also they were too polished pop without being a soul band. They were in that strange hinterland of aztec camera and other dross bands. This was 1988 when people were into led zepellin and acid house and a mixture of the two IE Stone Roses. They didn't stand a chance

This was from May 1988. Most artist's mimed on TOTP. It was very rare that anyone actually sang live. Most famous TOTP episode was from August 1988 when the group All About Eve appeared singing Martha's Harbour. The singer couldn't hear the backing tape and so was just sat there on the stage for a good 2mins not doing anything.
