This is one of my favorite videos! As a recovering addict myself, it is very painful to watch what Brenda went through. I am also a Mother, so I can definitely understand where Lisa's adoptive parents/guardians were coming from too. It made sense to me that the Mother was more defensive toward Brenda (Lisa's bio Mom) in the beginning, knowing the circumstances...but I'm glad that Brenda shared her truths with her, and that the husband tried to have a more sensitive approach to Lisa's involvement with Brenda. Children should have the right to meet & have a relationship with their biological parents, so as long as by doing so, they aren't being placed in any danger. Here you can see that despite Brenda's troubled history, she had fought hard against her past demons of addiction & worked toward her goals, so that she could become the best Mom she could be for her little girl. I wish more people would stop judging addicts in recovery. Like Luis says at the end of this video, you really have no idea how it is for someone else, unless you've been in their shoes. Brenda didn't just have addiction issues, she also had poverty, lack of proper upbringing/supervision, sexual assault, & many negative influences along the way. But she got her act together & achieved/maintained her sobriety for her child's sake. I'm sure she wants a better life for her daughter than she had. Please, if you're reading this...if you have someone in your life, especially a family member, who is struggling with addiction, don't give up on them & never lose hope. Recovery is possible! Even for those who have been abusing substances for years. I've seen some of the worst addicts get clean. Miracles do happen. If you're not sure how to help an addict, just love them, listen when they want to talk, support them & offer to help them find programs of recovery, whether inpatient detox/rehab, meetings, or otherwise. Sometimes just knowing people care can make a world of difference. Or if an addict is reading this, know that you are not alone & people do care. Help is available when you seek it.

I've dealt with trying to help those addicted to drugs. My sister's husband's sister and mother. We have tried over and over and forgave them repeatedly but it just gave them an excuse to walk all over us. The ones that want to change will and those who just want to continue doing drugs will never change no matter how much you help them. It may be sad but you can't help them all if they don't want to do it themselves.

People absolutely deserve second chances! Even when it comes to raping, abusing, or even killing!
@tabatha55543 жыл бұрын
So this is a tough one for me. I completely believe in giving people second chances as I am a recovery addict as well as my husband and we’re both going on 10 years clean and sober! We both absolutely made stupid decisions while we were high but I can’t get over the idea of Brenda putting her baby in the dumpster! I understand her being scared and not in her right mind and adding the fact that she conceived due to rape is horrible, but there’s so many options available for unwanted babies including literally dropping them off at hospitals, fire depts, etc.. no questions asked. The reason I can’t wrap my head around this is because that baby could have been killed had someone not found it. Also I can understand where the “mom” was coming from because my parents went through a similar situation with my cousin who gave birth while in prison for drugs. They raised the newborn and her 4 year old daughter for almost a year until she was released, she got out took the girls and ended up giving the baby away to someone else after my parents begged her to sign over custody to them! Now no I’m not at all comparing the situation but that couple raised Lisa and that was their daughter, and mom was not only angry at Brenda for abandoning lisa but also afraid of losing her to Brenda after raising her for 7 years. But I understand Brendas story to because we all make mistakes especially while suffering from addiction, she fought her addiction to become a better person and be a part of her child’s life which is one of the hardest things to do. It’s definitely one that touched me deeply🥺

So a young girl living on the streets probably wouldn't know that which is why it actually makes sense. I don't condone it at all, but you'd be surprised how many people even adults don't know the resources and options they can use.

I will admit I was like the adoptive mother when I first watched this video so angry that for one she wanted drugs while she was pregnant with her child, two beyond surprised and happy that even the drug dealers had more common sense than that, three she dumped the baby into a dumpster when there were so many programs out there that she could have taken her. I also went into this thinking she was probably raped which is not okay and poor girl. But once I heard her story and that she was sober for so long I thought back to my own situation like this when I was abandoned by my own mother and yet I still loved her very much even now I do and I'm so happy to have been a part of her life. She also later on had my brother when she was clean and sober and she has been such a good mom to him and I thought that was so incredible so in the end when I heard her story even though I thought it was still wrong and could have gone a different way I realized sometimes we don't really know for sure if it could have. Maybe she did try giving her up somewhere else or maybe she tried aborting it and turned to drugs to not only dull the pain but also to just end this life from her abuser growing inside of her herself. I'm not saying it's still right but I was happy to be reminded of the old sang "You never know a person unless you walk a mile in their shoes." In this case I have walked a mile in her shoes I was that little girl Lisa and yet I still turned out to be a strong as hell and maybe a decent person to boot. It takes a lot more strength to be the bigger person than it does the opposite. Thank you for reminding me of this Luis. Thank you so much.
