I have just been to visit Thornborough Henges. The north henge in the woods, in the middle of bluebell season was breathtaking. The whole central section was covered in bluebells.

Great show as always and a special thanks to Vince. I wonder if anyone has superimposed the constellation of Orion over the 3 henge to locate the possible positions of other monuments, and could there be a monument that corresponds with Sirius 🤔

Good point - and yes, there have been studies. We'll be coming back to Thornborough Henges sometime and we'll certainly find out more about the relationship to Orion. M😊

In the 21st century, I have a friend who keeps three lovely boxes and two ginger jar urns...they hold her last three dogs and one each for her mother and father.When our beloved horse Polydorus died (at age 46!) my partner and I inquired about taxidermy (we couldn't afford it, sadly}. I keep the carapace of my childhood tortoise on my bookshelf...we are not so different from our ancestors, eh?

Yes. My mum and dad wanted their ashes scattered at sunset on a hillside near Larnaca in Cyprus. Mum misunderstood what a casket was and Dad's ashes arrived in one of those sealed boxes folk put into niches in graveyards. The next year my sister suggested we did the same for Mum so they match. They never got into a niche so are together in a cupboard in my dressing table. Along with my gt aunts silver fox furs. Something else I felt I ought to keep as they would only be thrown away these days and it seems insulting to the poor foxes. So if my house got buried and the ashes and fox furs were discovered by future archaeologists I wonder what they would make of the connection. Of course there is none other than happenchance. Plus they are now in Andalucia rather than Lancashire.

Thornborough Henges... the better preserved one in the woods... I envy you for visiting them because I've always meant to. But the width of that berm! It had to be put there on purpose, because if you're going to dig out a ditch, you pile the spoil on the bank - not several feet away! It has my mind spinning...

Vince Gaffney is such a character describing details even down to feeding the fish Italian...he is such a hit. Stonehenge acoustics...have they tried the acoustics with the human voice, talking and singing? The Thornborough Henges... the awe that Michael expressed was brilliant...then taking the aerial shots to put it in perspective really brought it together...for the henge in the woods...Where is Time Team when you need them....thank you boys

Im sure they did voices and drums and stuff back in the happy hippy days when so many people seemed to believe that just by turning up there in bare feet and floaty clothes gave them special insight into the mindset of our ancestors. No idea if any research results came out of it or whether the amount of weed smoked meant they never got round to writing it up. Im sure I recall reading newspaper reports about the echoes from drums and tambourines or something.

Although I'm having trouble finding it online, I believe that Michael Pitts did a documentary some years ago recreating sound in Stonehenge...may have involved reconstruction of the site (but I could be blending two different documentaries in my mind). So fascinating, and I never forgot watching that. I would imagine most of that work would still hold (?)

Most likely not. Someone was making similar claims back in 2012 and he was not a fan! mikepitts.wordpress.com/2012/02/20/stonehenge-noises-off/ Best, Michael 😊

Worth noting that the blue stone does ‘ring’ when struck, which would be noticeable in the quarrying, moving and placing. So an awareness of this aspect is almost certain 😊

Just wanted to note saying Orion was known as the hunter within those cultures is speculative. For instance the Finns saw a scythe in Orion's belt, the Scandinavians a distaff. What the symbology was to the people who built the Thornborough Henges we may possibly never know. One thing is for sure though, it is a representation of Orion's belt.
@ThePrehistoryGuys4 жыл бұрын
Hi again ano (what should we call you??) You're right of course, there were a variety of cultural differences. The compelling thing is that there were a number of cultures who associated the constellation with either hunting or animals. R
@itsnony774 жыл бұрын
@@ThePrehistoryGuys Oh definitely. The same applies to the star Sirius which in a number cultures was known as either a wolf or a dog. It seems to indicate this symbolism was quite universal and hinting to a more connected world than we know of in ancient times. You can call me Martin.

Would the sound change if you built a structure around the heng made of wood with a roof and say an upper gallery. There is an idea floating around, and when ever I picture a great hall when I'm writing, I always picture stone heng as the base, it just makes sense.

You talk about the impression someone has at the first sight of a giant henge. Imagine someone has never heard the acustic in a 'bathroom" as you told it, how would he/she react to the sound of Stonehenge? For us is the sound in buildings familiar, but it's very different from sound in an open field or in the woods...

That Wood "Henge" . The size of it suggests perhaps a Community Religious Bull Ring ? Would it have been in use about the Age of Taurus, by any chance? 🤔 eta, if a Bull Ring, frankly I'd want upright timbers positioned into the bedrock as well. Just a thought. Bob. 👍🏴

Food for thought, which I'm not suggesting is correct, but is intriguing. I used to belong to an Astronomy Forum - I'm a really bad amateur Astronomer by the way, would start off with a viewing list always somehow started with a quick look at the Orion Nebula, and hours later, would still be hypnotised by its stunning beauty, and no progress through my viewing list had been made, and now cold, that was it for the night - so I'm prejudiced pro Orion. Anyway, I think it was so eone on that Forum, who pointed me to an article kind of proving that it Wasn't actually Orion's Belt all these ancient sites were reflecting, but actually Cygnus. I did rather poopoo this idea, but so many Myths and Legends involve interactions with Swans, that I'm really starting to wonder? If Orion has significance as the Hunter, I wonder what is significant about Cygnus? All the best.Bob. 🤔

Hollow bird bone has been found made into a flute, too. See John Noble Wilford, "Flutes offer clues to Stone-Age Music," NY Times (June 25,2009)....Also, on WIBW-TV Posted 1:41pm June 27, 2009 programme on German cave find of bird bone flute carved some 35,000 years ago, presume dthe oldest handcrafted musical instrument yet discovered. Another one found in Austria bekueved ti be 19,000, a group of 22 flutes found in French Pyrennes...etc.

Your theories about stars (Orion) I find most beguiling - My observation is that few archeologist know much about astronomy and few astronomers are archeologists so there is little cross over in thinking - This has lead to everybody being obsessed by alignments and ignoring the possibility of star maps plus, in my opinion, the numbers of stones and/or holes etc. The number of the stones at Stonehenge indicate a knowledge of not just the solar year indicated by alignments, but also the sidereal month, the synodic month, the anomalistic month (nodal cycle) and the Meton. Maybe even the possibility of the Saros Chantal Jegues-Wolkiewiez's work in the paleolithic decorated caves in France indicate star maps as well as a knowledge of solar alignments

These constructions were _enormously_ expensive to build. Why wouldn't they be multi-purpose sites? Part animal herding, part spectacle, part commercial, part 'ritual'? When are you coming back? I was there yesterday, as one does to distract away from recent imported religions, and there are certainly more people than when you were here a couple of years ago. Still not one sign to say what or where the Henges are, though.

"...the acoustics within a lecture hall?" Bear in mind the vast differences between an outdoor site like Stonehenge and a scale model of stonehenge, made of different materials, housed in an enclosed environment. There is simply no valid comparison, even using the most advanced recording technology. Any conclusions that have been arrived at are purely speculative.
