After moving 3 to the right side, I kept applying the rule of if 1/a = b then a = 1/b, then move constant to the right, then repeat the process. Very quickly arrived with the final answer.

Thanks for this video. However, I think using the inversion of fractions, subtracting the constant part each time, is more practical in this case.

The great thing about this problem is that every time you move a constant over to the right side of the equation and take the inverse of both sides, another constant pops up that you can move to the right side. Just keep doing this and a lone x will pop up, then you have your answer.

Many commenters explain other, and often more direct, solutions. (I, too, began with the compound fraction equaling -3, with its denominator equaling -1/3, etc.) While this video is also intended for students, etc., who do not yet have the insights to see and thus attempt such solutions, exposure to the basic mechanical solution is very helpful. That said, the insight-laden comments are also helpful for the same students, so long as the comments are read! The video and the resulting comments comprise such a valuable resource!

Yeah. Cross multiplying is WAAY overcomplicating things. If there were x's in more places, maybe it would be the best option, but not here.

Let second part of denominator 1 / ( 1/4 -- 1 / x ) = a ( equation 1 ). 1 / ( 1/3 - a ) = -- 3 Cross multiplying. -- 1 + 3a = 1. 3a = 2. a = 2 /3. Solving for equation ( 1 ) 1 / (1/4 - 1/x ) = 2 / 3. 2 ( 1/4 - 1 / x ) = 3. 1/2 - ( 2/x ) = 3. -- 2/x = 2.5. x = -- 2 / 2.5 ( same as -- 4 / 5 )

I did it part by part 1 _________________________ = -3 subtract 2 from both sides then multiply by -1 1/3 - 1 ___________ 1/4 -1/x 1 1 ______ = _____________ = 4x/(x-4) hence 1/4-1/x (x -4)/4x 1 __________ = -3 1/3 - 4x/(x-4) since 1 over some value = -3 that value must = -1/3 (so, if 1/n= -3 then -3n=1, hence n=-1/3)_ hence 1/3- 4x/(x-4) = -1/3 -4x/(x-4)= - 2/3 4x/(x-4)=2/3 multiply both sides by -1 12x= 2(x-4) cross-multiply 12x = 2x-8 10x = -8 x = -8/10 x= -4/5 answer

I would have done this in different way... After getting rid of 2 from the left side and geting 3 on right side., When we get -1 as numerator on left side, Lets take reciprocal of both sides... And get -1/3 on the right side.. Next.. we have 1/3 left side, take it to right side, the right side becomes -2/3... And then again cancel the megetive sign and next again take reciprocal of both sides....

Your method is way more complicated than it has to be and introduces too many chances for simple math errors. Same first step. The second step is to divide both sides by -1. The complex fraction now equals -3. That means that the entire denominator must equal -1/3 because 1/(1/3)=3. That means everything after the 1/3 in the denominator must equal 2/3 because 1/3-2/3=-1/3. Which means that the denominator in the fraction after 1/3 must equal 3/2 because 1/(3/2)=2/3. That leaves 1/4-1/X=2/3, which is very simple.

All the cross multiplying and distribution was unnecessary. First subtract the 5 on the right from the 2 on the left, and add the whole fractional term to the right. Now it is -3 = the fraction. Then swap the -3 with the entire right side denominator. Now you have 1/3- (1/(1/4-1/x)) = -1/3. Again, add 1/3 to both sides and add the fractional term to both sides. Now you have 2/3 = 1/(1/4-1/x). Flip both sides and you get 1/4 - 1/x = 3/2. Subtract the 3/2 from both sides and add the 1/x to both sides. Now you have -5/4 = 1/x. Now just just flip both sides x = -4/5. Never had to distribute out anything. Easy peasy.

sorry, but it is never necessary to bring the fraction on one denominator with x, it is very simple just add numbers on one side, and take the reciprocal value 3 times
