Well you being a southern fellow, and from Georgia no less, of course, gun oil is going to be used for applications other than taking care of firearms! It's a useful product, along with duck tape and maybe a pulled pork sandwich! I don't like the automatic hubs myself but it seems that is the norm these days, so knowing how to some preventive things is always a good thing! Knowledge is power, considering 50 cents worth of "Gun Oil" could save you a bunch of money in an unexpected repair!

The hubs dials themselves are another problem area. There is an aluminum permeable material on the end of the hand piece/dial. It is there to relieve air pressure for the vacuume portion of the hub, but it also allows moisture into the dials and can crust everything up. You can punch through the center with a small punch/screwdriver to disassemble the outer hub (once off the vehicle) clean and reassemble. Put a dab of grey silicone over the hole you've made.

I have a 2009 F250 with the 6.4L and a few years ago, I had to get my front hubs replaced, not even 90000km, luckily it was covered under warranty but if I recall, it was a $2000 repair bill. I just placed an order for some Archoil AR6200 and AR4200, been running both AR6200 and AR9100 in the 6.4L once Bill started to show the benefits Archoil and man, does AR6200 work great for increasing the distance between each regen cycle. I'm consistently over 400km with AR6200 added to each fill up. I missed one fill up without AR6200 and the regen cycle was activated around the 200km mark, twice for the tank I was on.

Love my 2000 7.3, manual hubs all the way for sure. Much rather hop out and take 12 steps then to worry about vacuum hoses, vacuum leeks, sensors and so on. All these parts and there ongoing costs just to eliminate getting out of the truck for less then 30 seconds. Hmmmm. So if the auto 4x4 breaks, I bet the time spent fixing things would be greater than just locking them in manually. Save some money, buy some boots, lock em in!

Interesting system, the F150 system is similar but in reverse. It uses vacuum to keep the hub open till you switch the 4WD on then it turns the vacuum off and the hub engages. At low vacuum they can make a clicking sound if the hub seal is going bad.

just an FYI. if your hubs are not locked, the axle sub just sits on the inner bearing. when the hubs are engaged and axle is actually turning, then the sub rides on the inner bearing. just wanted to correct that little bit of misinformation. Those of you driving around with your hubs locked and 4WD disengaged, your axles are still turning and actively riding on that inner bearing. People will do this while plowing because they don't want to get in and out of there truck to lock and unlock hubs because vacuum lock system isn't working. You will cook the inner bearings regardless of the amount of grease if you drive at highway speeds with hubs locked. the inner bearing are not designed for highway speeds. these are not sealed bearings.

I don't know if Triflow is any good but I've used it forever on everything and it works great. WD40 destroys more stuff than it fixes. It's a water displacement remedy. Don't use it on locks of any type. Clean those out with some white gas or other rapid drying solvent and then graphite powder the lock. Yeah, WD40 will work but the previous application of WD40 is why you have to do it again, it attracts dust. Graphite will silk that lock and you won't believe how smooth it works after that.

Bill, have you ever heard of a magnetic auto hub? I can't seem to find one anywhere, and I would think that would be a much simpler auto hub type in lieu of a vacuum operated system. Truck starts fine, you don't need to push the clutch in now to start it. You use to have to push it in to start. That part is nice but no 4 low is my biggest gripe, on my property it was nice to put in 4 low so I didn't have to ride the clutch as much. I have to replace the clutch soon gonna put new safety switch in to see if that's my problem when I replace the clutch.
@toddvance19798 жыл бұрын
Transfer case selector switch is probably corroded!, Safety neutral switch has nothing to do with 4x4 high/low
@stevewright19458 жыл бұрын
Todd edwin thank you I will check that. Are you sure the clutch switch has nothing to do with it? 4 high can engage at any time but for 4 low you have to be stopped in neutral or park for an automatic to engage or a manual you have to be stopped clutch in and foot on the brake to engage 4 low.
@toddvance19798 жыл бұрын
Yes i'm sure, Clutch doesn't have to be "in", They recommend that so people don't accidentally engage it under power. low is so powerful it could rip you're transfer case apart if you engaged it under a lot of torque.
