Several health conditions in the mother can lead to premature birth. These include infections (like urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted infections), high blood pressure, diabetes, or preeclampsia (a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and organ damage). These conditions can trigger early labor or necessitate early delivery for the mother’s health. Carrying twins, triplets, or more increases the risk of preterm labor because the uterus is stretched more than in a single pregnancy. The babies often run out of room or nutrients earlier, leading to premature birth. Women under 17 or over 35 are more likely to give birth prematurely. Advanced maternal age increases the risk of complications during pregnancy, which may lead to early labor. A family history of preterm births, whether on the mother's or father's side, may increase the risk of premature delivery. Lower-income women may face higher rates of premature births due to a lack of access to prenatal care, malnutrition, high stress, and inadequate living conditions.
Routine check-ups are critical in identifying and managing potential problems during pregnancy. Early detection of conditions like high blood pressure or infections can reduce the risk of preterm labor. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Eat a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support fetal development. Adequate hydration and moderate exercise can also promote a healthy pregnancy. If you have chronic health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure, work with your healthcare provider to keep them under control throughout your pregnancy.
