If you do not have rock or large roots, dig a small hole and put water in in. Take your ground rod and start going up and down into the small hole with water. Remove the rod. Add more water. Repeat. It actually works.

Two suggestions: - For a homemade post-driver, use regular iron/black pipe and close it off with a regular screw-on cap for the pipe. - To start, slide the post-driver onto the ground rod before you raise the rod to start. (Then you won’t need to climb up the ladder to slip the driver over the rod.)

Have you heard about the hammer drill? It is made for pounding rods or other items into the ground. It will save your back and arms from feeling pain the next day. By the way, you are not suppose to cut the grounding rods, that is a code violation and it is a no no. You can use a sledge hammer and anything else when pounding a ground rod all the way down into the ground. When lightening hits (if it ever does) your house the grounding rods will be able to handle the load all the way down into the ground.

Pile driver is a wresting move bro. Also, grounding rod should be driven 8 feet in for best results.

10 feet in Canada and better yet having two of them!

Thank you so much for making this video. Although I feel, you should have hammered the entire rod into the ground instead of cutting it off. The deeper you go, the less resistance you get which is a good sign. So should have pounded the entire rod with hammer and then connected clamp.

I just did a simple Google search, grounding rod should be about 8’ deep.

I used a T post driver and a 8 ft. step ladder till I got down to about 3 ft. My soil was very moist at the time. I am going to try a 1 X 6 inch pipe nipple and cap to pound it further. A 2 in. pipe and well driver cap s probably best though.

Reminds of me - nothing works and doing the long and wrong way. Why not try a clow bar, dig a couple of feet and then slide the rod and pound it? All then you need to do is pound a couple of feet and you will have the rod right in.

I have 3 9 foot rods in the ground and still can’t get my fence to ground. The ground is clay and when it drys it’s like concrete.
@susanamundson25423 жыл бұрын
You’ll have to water them. Sink a short section of 6” PVC sewer pipe next to each rod and dump water in from the top, it will slowly percolate down and keep the soil moist.

Your fence will probably never get it with lightning........... unless you bypass the lightning arrester haha

That would be a good video... a scorched blackened fence burnt and melted to the ground.

The part I don’t understand is lightning starts on the ground then goes into the sky it doesn’t come from the sky and strike the ground so putting a grounding rod to the hot wire would just increase the chances of it getting struck not decrease lol

Lightning can actually go both directions. It can also happen between clouds.

I don't get it. We just put a grounding rod in and simply used a sledgehammer and it took 5min. Yes, 5 minutes. I thought I would need an air hammer and a hammer drill and all these videos I have seen are ridiculous and leaves something to be desired of humans and over thinking everything. Getting these additional tools was a waste of time and aggravation. Just hammer it in and be done with it. Move on with life. It took longer for the camera setup and narration than actually hammering the rod in and moving on.
