At last we met Sir Taran van Hemert! Thank you for a great review, when I released Excalibur I was interested in what would you think of it. There is a manuscript (available on website) by the way, which explains all commands. I watched the video and made notes, here are my answers: 1) *Slow open of search bar* It’s actually instant on macOS, but on Windows there is a weird Premiere Pro UI flash and also active sequence gets deselected for a moment. It is not so bad, but I decided to avoid such inconvenience. Other users also asking to make search bar appear faster, so I will give you guys an option to enable instant search bar (with UI flash as a price). And when I will be done with most of feature requests I will rewrite Excalibur search bar, so it won’t depend on Premiere API. 2) *Alt+Space to open* I know, this Windows menu button… I wanted to reflect opt+space on macOS and make it uniform. I like your AHK script, which wraps ALT key, I think maybe I can create something similar for Excalibur (it will affect only Excalibur and nothing else of course) 3) *Undo button, when shortcut is changed* Yeap, feature request added! 4) *Transition called with shortcut shows text box* This is comes from Avid, I think. A lot of users like ability to type duration, so you can decide what length should it be on a fly. As you figured out, you can create defined duration in User Command. 5) *Apply duration to Playhead, duration disabled* This command applies transition from nearest cut to playhead, so there is no need to define duration for it. 6) *In settings, distinguish command that trigger submenu (textboxes)* Great suggestion, feature request added! 7) *Takes time when applying command to multiple clips long* This is a bottleneck of API. I can not apply effect simultaneously, it always happens in sequential order, so more clips you have, longer it takes. 8) *Hi future Taran! Lumetri presets are slow to apply.* Lumetri preset takes time, because of how API works. It needs to apply effect and then change each property, one by one, to match it with preset values. Lumetri has a lot of properties and also it has limitation when it comes to graphic properties (curves, wheels) 9) *No preset name near effect.* Sadly, API limitation. 10) *Solo lock tracks - how it works?* Select clip and Excalibur will lock all other tracks (you can define if it gets applied to audio/video or both). 11) *User needs to disable shortcut in Keyboard Shortcuts window, if he wants to use it with Excalibur.* Well again, API doesn’t allow me to mess with Premiere Pro keyboard shortcuts. Though there is a hack, to make it work, maybe I will add it at some point. 12) *Streamdeck support* I want to do this when I will have time. 13) *Wrapping keys* I was told by one of users about this feature. It is amazing, I never thought of something like that. I think it would be cool for Excalibur to have it, but I agree with you, I will get there after everything else is solved.

Constant gain is a + b = 1; constant power is a^2 + b^2 = 1 (a and b are the gains applied to both clips at some point in time). You essentially always want constant power. It will keep uncorrelated signals such as background noise at a consistent level throughout the transition. You could use constant gain for stylistic reasons, or transitioning between two clips that were originally from the same source which you split up at some point *and kept aligned* (correlated signals).

Working more and more with premiere and I've gained a lot more appreciation for these shortcuts. There's so much to editing that is art and craft, but unfortunately there's so much to it that is settings, buttons and clicking that its hard to get any real craft done in a meaningful and timely manner. Thanks so much for making videos like these and spending so much time educating and pushing these technologies to their limits. I just have to say it. Terran needs to get LTT to come up with a video editing keyboard with like 250 keys or something. The hardest part is designing the PCB and writing a driver for it. LTT has the tools and talent to develop the rest of it
@xureality
@xureality 4 жыл бұрын
there's mrkeebs keyboard builder (builder.mrkeebs.com/) which takes keyboard layout editor's (www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/) codes and generates a kicad pcb. It also generates a basic QMK firmware so editing that to get to where Taran currently is (with attaching keys to autohotkey) should be relatively easy. if you're wanting to make a custom driver and integrate it with premiere api, that might be a little harder.
@mini-_
@mini-_ 3 жыл бұрын
I'd totally build one for LTT, if they can work out a deal with a PCB manufacturer, because I suspect it would be quite expensive to make. Making the PCB is pretty easy (I have some experience with it) and making it to QMK works on it (so you can apply all kinds of keys, including F13 - F24) is super easy.

Hi Taran, thanks for these types of videos that you make. I’m also on a quest to make my life easier as a Premiere Pro editor and tried (a litte) to setup some macro keys. I initially started out remapping some of my underused MIDI controllers, but eventually ended up just using and extra numpad which i remapped to just the bare minimum shortcuts just to make my basic / initial editing faster. I set up buttons for in/out, trim head/trim tail, insert/overwrite and basic scrubbing shortcuts and them being on a USB numpad and using exisiting keyboard shortcuts that I have just remapped - it allowed me to bring it along with me if I edit in other studios. BUT, seeing your videos in the past and now seeing this new one - I REALLY want to try out Auto Hotkey and really take advantage of the quality of life improvements that it offers. I’m just getting ready to transition back into a Windows machine for that to start happening.

In the vim/model editing world, what you ask for last is called key chords. This is the idea that entering multiple keys in quick succession could trigger a shortcut. For example, if I enter Ctrl-W followed by q in vim, it closes the current window. Along with wrapping keys in other keys, this allows each key to be used as a new layer and is a lot more ergonomic IMO.

One existing way to get extra shortcuts out of a single keyboard that is used by some software (such as Visual Studio) is chords. That is for example "Ctrl K,D", which means hold Ctrl, type KD, then release Ctrl.

Personally I use Excalibur daily and have set up over 200 macros. Examples: - Ending songs with reverb and adding a constant fade. - Duplicating a clip and creating a blurred background behind it. - Generating a volume ramp based on the in and out points of a clip. - Instantly accessing the search bar to locate projects or specific items. What I love about Excalibur is how easily I can set up macros on the fly in Premiere Pro, saving time on repetitive tasks without needing standalone scripts.

Theoretically any key can be used as a modifier key assuming the API was written without many limits (but it would take some work to keep track of what keys are pressed and unpressed) and there are a lot of very useless keys technically able to be used. also the left and right standard modifier keys are sent separately so they can be thought of as separate layers (assuming the api exposes that)

This looks like it's trying to imitate the search function in Blender (and others, I assume, wouldn't know). Blender's search is nice because it's absolutely instant to bring up. Hopefully the developer of EXCALIBUR can get the search box to be as quick.
@ze_kel
@ze_kel 4 жыл бұрын
It's made to imitate a super popular after effects plugin - FX Console. Which by the way opens instantly, the reason is it's a C++ compiled extension, while excalibur uses CEP(basically Adobe's electron for extensions - uses html&js, easier to develop, but slow af). Making Exc. faster would require a significant rewrite.
@Sxxov
@Sxxov 4 жыл бұрын
that slowness of the panel opening is probably because it's CEP based, meaning it's just a website and has website loading times. it's also weird that it seems to be reloading from scratch everytime though, do you have extension debug mode enabled? normally it should load and cache everything. (you mentioned you tried to poke around in the api and you might've needed to enable that) also, weird it doesn't have grouped undos, which you can specifically start and end inside the scripts that it has to invoke. (this is the case in after effects scripting anyways)

I actually think this is great for hobbyists. Why? Because a single menu lets you type something in and come up with some command where you'd normally have to look online or dig through Premiere's menus. I use a text editor called Sublime Text. It has multiple type-search menus which I use extensively, one for selecting files, one for text editor functions, and another for language-specific functions like going to a function of name X.

Taran, you really should get into QMK keyboards. They would probably save you so much trouble. Those weird 60$ USB dongles, you could probably build 1.5 handwired QMK keyboards for that money, not to mention that a custom keyboard/keypad can effectively have any shape and number of keys you want. You could use Rotary Encoders in any way you can imagine, or basically add any other gadget you want, like trackballs, OLED screens, haptic feedback, or even communication with the host system. Also Ortholinear or column stagger is just more ergonomic, than those default peasant row stagger boards...

@TheDakes
@TheDakes 4 жыл бұрын
@@TaranVH I miiiight have written that comment overly tired at 3am. Anyway it's QMK, you can do whatever you want. You could use it for scrolling instead, or output any key combination (I think haven't actually used a trackball yet). But the bigger part is more having a board with the shape you want with as many buttons as you want with the mechanical switches you want, that output whatever you want. QMK even supports double and triple taps. Or one shot modifiers, where you press a modifier once and it will stay active until another key is pressed. Or Mod-Tap where you can make any key, like normal letter key, act like a modifier when held down. My point is this firmware is extremely mighty and you surely would find absolutely genious ways of utilizing it. Most of it, you could probably do in AutoHotkey, but I got the feeling the operating system is fighting more back than helping and this could already solve some of your issues or at least ease your live a bit. :)

In regards to your pipedream about 10 000 Function keys.... Frankly, function keys are to a decent degree already used by programs both left and right, all the way up to F24. (Now it is exceptionally rare that programs touch the ones after F12 since most keyboards don't have the other 12.) But what you rather would want is a "macro" key. Now, I put "macro" in quote marks for a reason, the key wouldn't be a macro. But rather a fully user definable key that no program should use for anything unless the user tells the program to use it. Unlike function keys that have more or less been used as filler, instead of making a million specific buttons. We already have, inser (paste), home, end, page up/down, pause/break among other application specific buttons. The F keys were made to not need to have 100's more application specific buttons. But it is still expected that an application can use these buttons. And thereby colliding with user hotkeys. The "macro" key idea largely avoids the risk of that collision. Since no application should use them unless the user says so. These "macro" keys are though part of a larger pipe dream of my own. My idea is to simply reinvent the wheel. Make a new standard for how a keyboard sends data to a system. Including information that isn't just useful for the regular typist, but also make a well formulized standard covering extensive shortcut capabilities though the introduction of more scan codes. And also add support for RGB lighting, analog inputs, since both those things are mainly held back by the current fragmentation in regards to standards. Though, RGB lighting has proliferated, but the software side of things is a mess...

@@TaranVH What's the "blank" key? Oh I see, it's a space character.   also does it, but it's literally a non-breaking space, so it has side-effects. That _is_ a really cool shortcut key. Never thought to use it. In fact, most JavaScript developers could benefit from knowing this; although, you can achieve similar effects using CSS.

Doesnt windows allow a program to grab the keyboard to prevent other programs using that keyboard? I know on Actkbd you csn do this and from there you can just map to specific keycodes or cause keycodes to send diffrent key sequences.

Ok so this is kind of out there but bear with me - what if instead of modifiers, you could use midi to trigger more commands? Using a function key as a modifier would certainly be an easier solution, but midi could permanently solve the issue of running out of key combinations. You could assign any additional commands to midi which could give you 16384 keys per midi channel. DAWs like Reaper already have things like this built in where a midi message can be linked to a command or multiple commands. I admit this would be a lot more practical for someone starting a rig like yours from scratch rather than building it in AHK though. Also I’m just thinking about how if you added a double tap function to each key, that could expand options for macros that you wouldn’t use twice in a row anyways.

I think HID is the problem. Everyone based their drivers around HID, and then their language abstraction layers around HID, and then got stuck on the idea that shift HAS to provide an uppercase version of the lowercase. Like sending a colon into an OS is a literal shift+semicolon. The amount of hacking I had to do both to macos' keyboard and XKB to get a modified programmer dvorak working was actual hell. And then when you get into moving custom layouts into keyboard firmware with QMK you're still limited by how fast you can send a shift modifier, and needing to keep dead space around the trailing edge of the shift to make sure that a colon and then another letter doesn't accidentally screw up that letter. Or trying to create a new modifier key for use as a hyper or something. Or doing crazy things like trying to make a septambic keyer, HID fights you so hard. HID is the problem.

Function keys are useful for more than professional work. Even gamers sometimes need a few more keys. The problem is a lot of games just IGNORE all function keys above F12 (regardless if it's AHK or a real button like on an Apple keyboard) We need to mainstream *at least* F13-F24 and I would totally be on board for standardizing thousands more keys that can be used for cool stuff. If keyboard manufacturers (besides Apple) still gave more than 12 Fs, software support would soon follow. It would probably be easiest to market/most successful as a "gaming" keyboard.

A knob that is also capacitive, to be used for gain. I touch it, and the number 0 appears onscreen. I rotate it and that number increases or decreases appropriately, up to about 30 and - 30. When I release, the GUI vanishes, and that amount of gain is applied to the clips I have selected. This is theoretically possible to do without any API access. Just write a program that for the knob that would accept the input, then send the shortcuts CTRL G, then the number, then ENTER.

@@TaranVH I remember a colleague of mine used to have a deck with multiple knobs on it that he was able to control multiple settings in premiere in. If I remember correctly tho, they had screens built into them, so that he would see the applied setting on the knob instead of in a pop up. It was a p in the a watching him set up what controlled what, the good thing was that you could set multiple profiles to different applications. Imma ask him what that thing was, but he might have built it himself, we called him Mr Jankmaster.... PS.
