@premier lawns Mate, how do you stop birds from eating all the seed you sow, both when overseeding and refurbishing? I only have small lawn areas so aerate with pitchfork, rough up with a heavy rake, sow and then cover the seed, but the little buggers just keep coming back and I get big empty patches! Thanks!

Hmm! Its made me think. When I scarify my lawn that has a bit of POA in it, I am going to consign what is taken out of the lawn to the Green council bin rather than put it on the compost heap otherwise I could just be reintroducing the POA seed back into the garden!

That AMG is a tough cookie. It grows well in low nutrient and compacted soils. I have had success just ripping it out or cutting it out by trowel and reseeding. Keeping my grass high seems to help as well. I fertilize with Milorganite, an organic nitrogen and iron product, and it helps hide the AMG for a month or more, as the color really changes to a dark green. Good luck. Didn't know it is an intercontinental weed😮

I think we are all suffering from the dreaded poa annua. No doubt helped by the wet May we have had. Verticutting probably the best way of controlling it along with raking the patches so you can cut the seed heads off and catch them in the box. For the pros, primo max can stop the seed heads forming but it still needs removing. An option worth trying is applying corn gluten meal in mid/late March which acts a a pre emergent. Its a constant battle though! Good options here Robbie 👍🌱

All good stuff, I need the lawn to thicker up a bit before I start into the plant growth regulator. A jar of that costs the same as the cylinder mower did lol 😂😆

@@Premier_lawns_official Yes it's not cheap! Next spring just as the daffodils are opening I'm going to get some corn gluten meal down which also acts as an organic fertiliser too. For others asking here as well as on the Facebook forum a big lawn care company has basically launched this year a product that as far as I can tell is corn gluten meal with added iron. Don't know if I can name them? But I'm definitely going to be having a try next spring and maybe in the late summer/early autumn.

5 weeks a go I overseeded my lawn and added a 6-9-6 fertiliser to help promote better roots. However, I only raked as much thatch as possible up and used a garden fork to aerate the lawn as preparation (only a small lawn). After 2 weeks of cutting and gradually lowering the height so I never took off more than a third at a time, my grass is currently about 40mm and I have noticed large patches of these thick stemmed grass with seed heads, the problem aswell is that the grass is so bare in these patches, I have been raking them up slightly to stand them all up and cut over them. What should I do about the larger bare patches? Should I remove the corse grass and reseed/top dress? Or wait until the autumn and do a professional job.

👏👏👏 thank you kind sir! I had been thinking that sand wasn't going to help the lawn hold water better and could create more runoff in my low areas. Aeration and I think some strategic plantings could help one spot I have that's a bit of a hump and lower near the driveway..it already looks sandy, why add more of that!? Regarding seeding, what temperature is just bad/wrong to seed at all? Am I doomed now to wait til autumn? Might I try to seed some shader parts ( they are few) . My dad's poor yard is completely ties up. Not sure I can identify anything that's not a weed. Hi Robbie, love your videos and this was especially timely. A year ago I knew next to nothing about maintaining grass so your content has really helped. I started off laying new turf and then this spring, scarified, aerated, and over seeded along with a layer of topsoil. I thought all was good but as I looked closer I started to notice different grasses which I now know are POA. There are a surprising number of small clumps given that the lawn is just a year old. Ive spent time digging up the weeds but have a few questions: - what is the easiest way to identify the weed grasses? I understand it's light green colour, sort of wiry feel and elongated seed head but still its quite hard to differentiate some of the grasses. - The lawn edges by a wall or raised bed which are difficult to get close with a scarifier/ aerator / mower seem particularly badly hit. Any tips how to handle these? - how often can I aerate? I feel this is an easy and effective way to promote the good grass whist inhibiting the weeds. is there too much of a good thing? thanks in advance!
@Premier_lawns_official3 жыл бұрын
John to a certain respect you just have to learn to live with them. A weed is a plant on the wrong place, so if you look at your lawn and see ugly grass, then that makes it a weed

How about mulching? Does it really spread the poa seeds or are they to young to germinate?
@Premier_lawns_official3 жыл бұрын
Mulching is going to spread the seeds something rotten!

I have large patches of my lawn that are ravaged with pow and a broad leafy thick light coloured grass. Would u suggest hand weeding or bite the bullet and kill it off and start from scratch?

Hi! Amazing videos! I have a question: I scarefied, overseeded and toppdressed this year. Is this something you could/should do every year? or is it a bad thing to scarify again one year after overseeding and will I just rip out all the new gras I planted this year? Thanks!!
@Premier_lawns_official3 жыл бұрын
If you overseeded, hold off until the following year for another scarification.

I overseeded about 3 weeks ago. Few growth spots here and there but nothing really noticeable. The grass is now long and needs cutting badly. What would you advise I do? Leave it few more days for seed growth or give the grass a cut and risk killing the new grass?

Cut it on a high setting no probs at all

Hi Your video was very useful. Last year I laid a new turf lawn with golf course quality for Tees. In March I employed a contractor to hollow tyne, over-seed and dress with 80/20 loam mix. The seed to match the turf, was purchased from the turf supplier was 30% Sombrero Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass, 35% Valdora Slender Creeping Red Fescue, 20% Musica Chewings Fescue, 15% Rosinante Strong Creeping Red Fescue. I have a lot of Poa Annua which I assume is from the 30% Meadow Grass. I am after a lawn with a wow factor so I am taking all the measures shown in your video. Question, what seed mix should I now use to improve my lawn. I intend to through away the remaining seed from the supplier. Eddie

Best to keep using the same type of seeds that you have and try and create the best conditions for the grass that you do want over the grass that you don't

Robbie, is it possible to just make peace with weed grasses and accept the battle is too difficult to win? I've got these seed heads everywhere, I have pulled them out regularly but can't keep up. If I maintain a healthy lawn and over seed regularly, will weed grassed eventually still outcompete your lawn?
@Cremedelacreme903 жыл бұрын
Im in the same boat, I'm keeping the grass nice and low so its less noticeable. The struggle is real 😫

are there any preemergent applications we can use in the uk to kill of the seeds before they germinate?

Hello Robbie, the verticutting that I done a couple of weeks ago on my back lawn has really reduced the poa , as far as I know . I have been cutting every other day . My front lawn is a different story , after a spring feed and plenty of water the poa seams to be really thriving . Does removing all the stolons and seed heads harm the actual growth of the root or will the poa plant still be able to grow and produce more seeds .

This time of year is really disheartening, most lawns where i am are made up of weed/meadow grasses so i've just had to live with it and accept it 😢.

@@Premier_lawns_official True that, but most of the lawns round here are like football pitch size 🤣 and the customers dont wanna pay for it or think it needs fixing lol
