I'll definitely try to tune in to this. I've been writing my stories into my samsung notes for the past 4 or so years. A lot of it has changed in that time and only a few ideas have stuck but I go back now and then and work them out. I'm still looking forward to realizing these ideas in full one day BUT I do have a few pages that are mostly done or at least partly done, and some of them I'm pretty proud of

as someone who's been trying to do research comparing charecters to little sprinkets of what i want in my own charecter i whole heartly agree with the research department as well as the doing what you love/want to tell. I feel a lot of people restrict themselves cause they are not willing to push their own capabilities or get out of their comfort zone.

thank you so much for adding the passion part, sometimes it's overlooked trying to aim for perfection and giving an audience what they want, so it's nice to be reminded that it's your work

You're absolutely right. I think far too many creators allow outside influence to either directly or indirectly make decisions about their art and stories. It's easy to do though, if we don't keep reminding ourselves why we started making the thing in the first place. I personally like comics a lot more when it's made it to print without being run through the filter of "how can I sell more of these" or something similar.

Full disclosure, these are really rules and fundamentals I follow, nobody should tale these verbatim. One of the most important things I've learned in developing stories is that you must write everything down. There were so many times when I had a good concept or even some partly developed idea that I neglected to write down at all, thinking "yeah I'll just remember it for now no big deal" and then later realizing that its something I've forgotten entirely and now I cant get it back. It really helps to write down ideas when you have a lot of them too. I have something like 8 or 9 different folders for singular ideas, and then a few other note pages for other ideas which haven't really taken off yet. So when I'm working on one story I usually put the rest to the side, and then if I have an idea for another story I'll write it down and then either try to develop it or return to whatever else I'm working on. Another thing is, dont be afraid to let others help you in working on your stories. Yeah you might want to do it alone because you dont want anyone else changing the point in your story, but then thats not always a bad thing. But it is important to keep an open mind about where your story will go because it doesn't always turn out the way you expect. Which brings me to my seccond lesson, sometimes a story must be written with what it needs, not just what you want. Yeah you may want to be more focused on action but you lose the meaning in the relationships of the characters. And then maybe you want to kill off a character thinking it will shock the audience, but then you lose the essence or even the drive of the story. And thats not to say that one should be afraid to do any of these things, only that its not always the right thing to do. Shock factor for one thing can really entice the audience for the time being but the problem with it is that once its overused the audience will likely lose interest because they will always know what to expect. Sometimes it tears apart some of the fundamental elements of the story or it makes a certain big event which previously took place redundant. On top of that, it removes all meaning to the shock to begin with because by then it wont matter who dies or what gets impacted since it is in a perpetual state of being destroyed. And again, one shouldn't fear using devices like these, just know that it probably shouldnt be done too often.

These are great points. I've first hand experienced them both. It's really good to keep an open mind like you said, keep organized, and to be able to relinquish control of the helm from time to time, if the story necessitates it. Thanks so much for sharing!
