I agree Anthony Fantano, I just put this on and I already love it! Feeling a strong 8 on this one.

What is the story behind the band's name? It's Vietnamese and I'm curious.

Viet Cong is what we called the Vietnamese we were fighting during the Vietnam War? Maybe that's what it is referring to?
@TildeSymbol9 жыл бұрын
dhanosuzuki I'm Vietnamese and I know its meaning. But what I'd like to know about is how and why they choose that name.

Henry Lưu It's pretty bloody off-putting! I love this song, but did a double take when I saw it. They're white guys from Calgary (my birthplace). They released this statement about it in which they suggest they're idiots: Our band, Viet Cong, has existed for a little over three years now. When we named ourselves, we were naive about the history of a war in a country we knew very little about. We now better understand the weight behind the words Viet Cong. While we don't take any concerns about the name lightly, we feel it is important to let you know that we never meant to trivialize the atrocities or violence that occurred on both sides of the Vietnam War. We never intended for our name to be provocative or hurtful. We truly appreciate the seriousness of the feedback we've received, and we will continue to be open to listening to issues and concerns from all perspectives. With love from the band Viet Cong. CONCLUSION: we'll check our email, but we ain't going to change it, no matter how many shows get cancelled or Vietnamese people email us and suggest that they're families were terrorized by the Viet Cong, and that our name is insensitive. As if they weren't JOY DIVISIONY (lots of Nazi imagery/references) already. JD, I'll admit though weren't fascists and used the name more ironically or to be political. VC gives not impression that they thought it out. I'd respect the name more if they were actually communists. aviewfromtheannex.blogspot.ca/2010/04/no-joy-division-was-not-into-fascism.html

Adam Brown Oh wow, thanks man. That's a lot of information. Personally, I don't feel offended by the name or anything, just curious why they chose the name. A name is just a name, anyway. If they don't act or do anything stupid on it, I'll fine with that.

They sound pretty different to me. Both post-punky but in different ways. These guys have better guitarists.
