*I collect fluorite for the past 18-yrs. in Southern Illinois* *Never once have I encountered any 'Quartz' manifestations on the examples of Fluorite, although many have Calcite and other manifestations of minerals as a 'crust' on the Fluorite* (I have yet to see any Quartz in Hardin/Pope/Williams region, or anywhere else in Southern Illinois) I'll ask Ben Clement Jnr. if he has seen it, since he is the 'Worlds' Authority' on Fluorite...very unusual! *I have many 'Beauties' in my house, but can't bear to sell them, because the last time I did, it did and still does make me upset...not to mention the 'low-ball' prices from the buyer!* Nice to see your specimens!

@@gerrynightingale9045 most of my research has been into Hardin county, specifically the Hamp, Empire, And Hicks Dome area deposits, but I've been looking into all the deposits in Hardin and Pope county. But I'm rather new at this so there's that.

What a great video! I have quite a few fluorite octohedrons but I have never known exactly how they form on a matrix. By the way, your specimens are fantastic.

Great video! Thank you! I have a crystal cluster I would like to clean but it has some calcite inclusions that I would like to keep. I'm interested in your wax coating process to protect the calcite while I give the rest of the specimen an oxalic acid soak. I'm wondering what type of wax to use and if the wax will withstand the oxalic acid or if there's another solution I should be using? Any tips would be much appreciated! Thank you ~Best regards

so i founds some fluorite with some quartz on it that i want to remove. how do i do it?
@MineRatMinerals7 жыл бұрын
You can remove the quartz a couple of different ways, chemically and mechanically. Each comes with their own positives and negatives. We would recommend not using chemical means unless you are a trained professional in regards to the handling procedures for said chemicals. Unfortunately we're not at liberty to share any further information on this subject, due to liability and/or things we regard as trade secrets.

Possibly HF

the final specimens, though pretty, look a bit eat up by chemical reaction. I can only assume that's the secret method, which shouldn't be a secret since cleaning various minerals with types of acid is common knowledge. I don't think I would ever use harsh chemicals on fluorite due to the fact that the crystals will be damaged, even if miniscule, surface etching, losses, etc. I would much rather have a completely natural fluorite piece, even if not as visually attractive. At least it's not damaged to be a pretty thing in someone's curio cabinet. :/

Personally I think the etching on the fluorite spoils the piece.

So the HF process will remove the quartz, like what I have for example, Fluorite sandwiched in quartz...? And not damage the Fluorite itself ??
