I took some time off from learning about the big planes to practice a bit of touch and go's with the 172. Since I plan on getting my PPL I figured I needed to focus more on the single prop since it is a completely different beast to fly.

Just a heads up, when starting and shutting down the engine, you never want to have your avionics on. Sometimes the alternator/generator can surge a bit and might cause damage to your radio equipment. Now, just because you start with the avionics on doesn't mean you've ruined the avionics, but when your avionics cost thousands of dollars, you don't want to risk it.

Hey devil, as a student pilot myself who has flown multiple 152s and 172s, I can tell you that you don't need flaps unless you're going a short/soft field landing/takeoff. :)

Aussie PPL here, we dont use flap here on the 172 for TO as it reduces the climb performance,,, however for short field we use flaps 10. I love watching you fly Devil, takes me back to grassroots. Your circuits are triangular and have no defined upwind, crosswind, downwind and base segments, but experience will point you true. Stabilise a little further out for a centerline landing, and SMOOTH INPUTS, way to tight on the controls. Fuel mix, we lean until highest RPM and then 5 turns back towards rich and set friction. 1978 172N POH Short Field Takeoff Wing flaps - UP Carb heat - Cold Brakes - Apply Throttle - Full Open Mixture - Rich Brakes - Release Elevator Control - Slightly Tail Low Climb Speed - 59 KIAS (Until all obsticles are cleared)

You're gonna' really enjoy your first checkout ride, you will have a sweaty death grip on the yoke as I did, small planes feel nothing like the bigger jets, a lot more responsive you feel every little tiny bump.

Hey Devil hope you read this. I started my piloting degree for helicopter last September and seeing you do more simulators like this and hearing that you're starting your private has really inspired me. It's so cool knowing one of my favorite and longest followed KZbinrs is doing something like me. I really wish you the best in flying and I hope someday I can meet you in the sky's. And if you're ever in Texas I might give you a ride.

Hey DDG, just a friendly tip: on your takeoff procedure, right before leaving the taxi way, turn the aircaft about 45° towards the runway and come to a full stop. Then do a magneto test. To do a magneto test, put your brakes on completely and throttle up to 100% momentarily. Observe the RPM you reach. Now throttle down completely. Switch from both magnetos to only one and complete the same procedure. Your RPM reading should be half of the previous test. This is to check that both magnetos are performing at equal strength. Now switch back to both magnetos and taxi on to the runway. Finally, on takeoff, after rotation, you should climb to 1000ft. AGL before turning. Most ATC will specify to do so. Hope this helps!

You actually start up with the mixture out on this plane... before hand, you turn on fuel pump, push mixture in, wait for fuel flow to spike (around 5) push mixture out, turn fuel pump off, hit the key, she'll fire right up, then push the mixture to full rich, then start leaning out for ground ops. If you flood it, (and this isn't in the checklist but I do it anyway because it works), fuel pump off, mixture in full, throttle to half, pull fuel valve out, crank until sputtering and/or starts, if it starts, quickly push fuel valve in, if sputtering, push fuel valve in, throttle crack and hit the key again. The flooding thing is kinda what you do if you flood your dirtbike so I just adapted it here, that's how you know they're simulating an engine because that works haha, A2A makes the highest quality GA planes for sims EVER.

To start the plane you dont turn the avionics on till the engine is running and you prime the engine by pushing the throttle about 1/3 and then fuel pump then full rich then wait 3 seconds then pull mixture to cuttoff call clear turn the key to start start the engine full mixture turn on avionics throttle to 1200 then back the mixture out until the rpm drops then turn the mixture back until the rpm is gained back then you are ready to go

Just some tips, in the 172 you don't need flaps to T/O, unless you are performing a short field or soft field takeoff, avionics don't come on until after you start the engine (so your not draining your battery). Also good luck on getting your PPL, got mine back in September 2014

Hey DevilDog... great vid! The best tip i can give you for improving your landings, is to just before touchdown, power off, then raise the nose to the horizon until excess speed bleeds off, and the then the aircraft settles onto the runway very smoothly. For this to work, you must be on the back side of the power curve,

Glad to see hear you are gonna take up flying. It's both exciting and relaxing in one hobby. Just a comment though on what you mentioned in the video about what some of the real life pilots told you when flying a small GA plane like a C172. When flying the plane, it is alot more of how the plane feels and what your eyes see going on outside the plane. But (and especially while your are getting your license) nailing the numbers on the instruments is gonna be vital. Learn what speed you should begin your rotation for takeoff. What speed do you climb at. What speed you should drop your 1st notch of flaps (notice the 1st white area of your airspeed indicator from 35-85 knots? Don't drop that first notch of flaps if you are not in the white, under 85 knots). And so on and on. When you are in the area of the airport doing takeoffs and landings, being precise is very important. Otherwise, really enjoying the new videos with Predar3d.

When I'm doing circuits in the C172R Nav III, which is exactly what A2A simulates here but with a G1000 instead of steam gauges: Flaps 10 on T/O Rotate at 55 At 200' AGL, check safe alt/airspeed, flaps up Climb at 76 Turn crosswind at 500', downwind at 1000' 2000 RPM on downwind When abeam threshold, throttle back a bit and drop flaps 10 Maintain altitude until threshold is 45 degrees off your shoulder Turn base leg, 70 knots in descent usually works for me Usually drop 20 before turning final, depends on your altitude Use pitch for airspeed and throttle for altitude on final leg, side slip if needed Flaps 30 before landing, look for about 60 over threshold Flair before touchdown, but not steep enough to look sight of the runway over your nose Don't follow this religiously of course, listen to your instructor, but this is what a proper circuit looks like for me on a calm day. Note that my airport is 4000' ASL.

This video's comments are just full of advice so far - so what's a little more? (I know this vid's not about being 'technical' - so don't take it wrong) First, you check your local ATIS for weather. Important for these take-offs and landings is to at least note wind direction and speed. Having a tailwind can completely sabotage a landing, while a good headwind can take the edge off (free lift, lower ground speed) The window's able to be opened - before you start the engine, hit your beacon - open the window - and yell clear before you start the engine. You might feel stupid doing it in a sim, but it's not a bad habit to build. A good altitude for a final decent is about ~2k feet, distance out can depend on conditions but roughly no closer than about 2 miles or so out. A steeper decent means that you're probably overcoming your drag and picking up ground speed (fast landings are bad landings). If you like the terrain of KPSP PALM SPRINGS, then - when you get your nuts up - take a twirl around KASE ASPEN COLORADO. It's gorgeous, and the landings are shit-your-pants entertaining.

Tips (Not critisim just advice) - Landing lights and strobes go on as you enter the runway (As well as your transponder to ALT), taxi when you begin your taxi. Beacon goes on whenever you do something that can get someone killed like starting the engine. Second, leave the avionics off when starting the engine, irl you would break them as you need as much power as possible.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but you should test right and left magnetos, then test the carb heat during startup inspection. Ideally you should notice an rpm drop for each test. Each cylinder has two spark plugs and one goes to the right mag, the other to the left mag. By switching one mag off at a time the rpm drop should be the same. Carb heat prevents ice from forming in the low pressure area of the carburetor which can obstruct air flow into the engine. However it heats the air flowing into the engine causing it to become less dense and reducing horsepower. Basically if the carb heat works, you'll notice an rpm drop. There's a bunch of other procedures, and you should probably look for a checklist.

Hey Devil, if your learning how to fly here's a couple cool tips 1) If your using ForeFlight, you can connect FSX to it and track your movements there. www.foreflight.com/ ipadpilotnews.com/2012/12/how-to-use-foreflight-on-your-ipad-with-microsoft-flight-sim-x/ 2) You can buy checklists and use them for important information like Rotation speed (Vr), Best rate-of-climb (Vy), Best glide etc. You can also use a 172 POH reprint that has the same information as well as better explanations. That way you start to get the hang of following procedure and maximizing performance. Make sure that you use the appropriate ones for 'your' aircraft. 3) "Bunny-hopping" or "Bouncing" can be but is not exclusive to high-speeds 4) Finally, the most important thing in learning how to fly is trusting your instructor. If things aren't working out, even if the that person is very knowledgeable, find a new one. Its your money, you should feel comfortable around that person.

@PsiiKoTiiK
@PsiiKoTiiK 9 жыл бұрын
Standalone....Prepar3d is a better version of FSX In 2009, Lockheed Martin announced that they had negotiated with Microsoft to purchase the intellectual property (including source code) for the Microsoft ESP product. Microsoft ESP is the commercial-use version of "Flight Simulator X SP2". On May 17, 2010, Lockheed announced that the new product based upon the ESP source code would be called "Prepar3D" (pronounced "Prepared"). Lockheed has hired members of the original ACES Studios team to continue development of the product. Most Flight Simulator X addons work in Prepar3D without any adjustment because Prepar3D is kept backward compatible.
