Building an Emergency Medical Bag

I had a decent medical kit before, but it was not up to snuff for really serious, life threatening injuries involving massive bleeding. So I started building a new kit. What you see in this video is my medical Go-Bag at it's current stage...about $200 invested thus far. See what I have so far and see if there is anything you are missing, and offer suggestions on things you think I should add. Have some other stuff coming...CPR masks, Chest seals, etc. There will be a part 2 in about 200 more dollars...

I'm a medical professional(Paramedic)...I'll vouch for the tourniquets, CELOX, and Izzy bandages (we refer to them as that). My main concern is this: if you're not a medical professional, i'd ditch the sutures and the staples. Suturing lacerations is not like sewing some cloth. The needle decompression needle is a dangerous procedure if you're not trained to do it properly, so that i'd advise not to have as well if you are not trained to do it. The airway you have, is NOT one-size fits all....you have to measure it so if you are not trained to use that, again, I suggest not using it. You will do more harm than good if you aren't properly trained to use some of it. Get some training (Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT would be a GREAT course to take as they are professional certifications, and focus on extended time away from a hospital), and go from there. Training is the best tool in a kit.

I disagree. It´s better to have high quality stuff ready to use, than not have it at all. What I carry first aid stuff with me is meant to be used by medical professionals on myself. Sometimes when an accident happens, somebody who is a trained professional wants to help but has nothing to use. If on the other hand, I want to help, I use what I'm confident to.

I just saw this video. I can attest your statement about Medihoney. My late wife earlier had some terrible open sores on her abdomen that the wound care center showed me how to use. Within a couple of months of constant application and other wound care procedures, it healed up beautifully. I swear by that stuff.

Well done. Getting people thinking about what they need and where to get it is a fine service to your fellow man. Now I am hoping you have more vids just as good on your channel. Learning to use this gear and training in general is always the best way to go, but thats only half the battle. Your right to get the gear first. Can always learn about it later, but you have no shot if you dont have the gear.

Good video. That kit is pretty thorough. I’m a Combat life saver in the army and one of the things that I do is I put pre-cut 100mille and hour tape strips on my sucking chest wound seals (obviously on the outer package). This helps me move quicker when dealing with this type of injuries. If you want to exchange knowledge just hit me up.

I'm sure its in the other kit you mentioned but medical tape paper, plastic, cloth, waterproof... hold down the gauze before wrapping to secure it with outer wrap stuff you got in there. Excellent kit Chris !!! I still need to get one of the CAT's for mine.

Today my CPR mask shipped. I went to a closeout store and got another box of small gauze pads, two gauze rolls, more bandaids, and a pack of "heavy" maxi-pads. Those are the best bet for putting together a bleed kit on the cheap.

Great vid, I had this open in one window and a medical supplier in another to order some of the gear, thanks Chris Not sure what the rule is in the States but in Britain we're told to forget about mouth-to-mouth and concentrate on chest compressions. Apparently getting the heart going is top priority and the chest compressions bring a small amount of air in to the lungs which is enough until the casualty either expires or can breathe on their own, just wondered on your thoughts on this

yeah, im an emt and was trained as a combat life saver in the army, i would also suguest to ditch the quick clot, usually does more harm than good, has to be surgically removed. i would add more pressure dressings and a liter of isotonic solution

Very good start so far. A few recommendations I would make are, add blue or white gloves instead of black. You cant see blood or other substances and at night its hard to see your own hands, sounds dumb but learned from experience. Small flash light and a headlamp. Dollar store gauze rolls, they suck but to stabilize an object that is still in the body they work great and cheap. Label containers in case someone else is using your kit. Sharpie, and note pad to take info down. Keep it up!

Something I have in every bag because they are relatively cheap but awesome blood soakers/stoppers...maxi pads. I put them in zipper bags to keep them dry and clean.

Remember the OPA you have isn't one size fits all, they come in kits that don't take up a bunch of space. A set of NPA's with some water based lube would be good also, but I'm actually still trying to find a set myself. A pocket cpr mask to complete your airway and breathing.

Right on.. I normally just carry some bandaids.. maybe a few alcohol swabs. Since I can also use them for firemaking if need be.

A lot of the cost came from the specialized stuff, like Celox. Just those two added about $60 in cost.

NPA=Nasopharyngeal Airway (nose tube used to open/maintain airway to lungs.) OPA= Oralpharyngeal Airway (Mouth to throat devise used to maintain oral airway & keep tongue out o way.) Both have different causes of use, but are very handy.

Somewhat. Planning on going to a good class beginning of December.But the idea behind it is one I picked up from someone else. Have the supplies even if you don't know how to use them yet.. Too many times there IS a trained passerby...one that doesn't have what they need. Make it easy for them to help YOU. It's not to run around playing Super-EMT.

I've read that the Celox he has isn't like Quik Clot which has to be surgically removed. I haven't looked that much into it because I don't have either but read this when I considered adding one of these type of items.

Something to tell/pass on I'm a trucker most of us are stuck going a certain speed! My truck with the pedal on floor goes 65MPH we speed up slow and most of the time takes awhile to stop! Hope this info helps anyone

The point of the "Burn Cream" is that is is a topical anesthetic. Would have been great to have when I ran my hand through those stinging nettles last time out.

If you are looking for Celox, I would recommend getting ChitoGauze instead. It's made of the same main ingredients. It is about $10 more, but it is like QuikClot Z Fold Gauze. It's folded in a Z format and you pack it in the wound like a Z Fold Gauze. All you have to do is open it, Pack it in the wound, and put pressure. Don't have to worry about anything blowing away. And ChitoGauze is one of the new military standards.

One of the problems with medical stuff is... Expiration date, you need to continue to replenish not only if used but by date. Can be expensive to maintain. Glad you do what you do.

Note! If you can use QuikClot to stop bleeding, that is better and easier when the person gets to the ER. Quikclot is impregnated into the sponge or gauze (depending which type you get). But with Celox, it's a powder or granular form. If you use Celox, it can be a pain when they get to the ER because they have to flush it out/scrape out the Celox before they close you up. Ouch! Hey but anyway to get the bleeding to stop.

Im a nyc EMT. Some of that gear is cool to have. All the pressure bandaging is great, the cold packs are great. In my opinion that hemostat is good too but the problem with those is in a windy area you could get it in your eye which is not good. Do I think you need suture gear no I do not especially because even I wouldn't feel comfortable giving a suture unless i truly had to. In my kit if i had one i would keep an IV start kit, a shit load of gauze, cold packs, medical tape, epi pens, chewable asprin for a suspected AMI, and maybe a decom needle. you really dont need a needle for a pneumothorax mainly because you dont know how to identify a pneumothorax. anyway cool kit have fun

Ryan Shank I agree with the Hemostat. I would like to include that most Ambulance companies have steered away from the granules because surgeons will curse your name forever if you use them. Much harder to clean out of the wounds.

I noticed that your bag had four (4) zippered areas. Did you get it at Elite First Aid? I went to the site and they advertise a M3 Medic Bag. I have a M3 (original army Issue) and it only has three (3) zippered areas and seems to be much smaller than yours. I would be very interested in a Four (4) zippered bag because I'm going to assessable a two-in-one Kit (Bush craft & First Aid / Trauma) in one grab bag. Any help / guidance would be appreciated, Thanks.

This gets a lot of comments, so I figure I'll answer more than once because people will miss it. I don't know everything yet. I base it on someones wise advice that it's good to have stuff even if you don't know, because a situation could arise where there is knowledgeable people without the supplies. It doesn't mean you are going to try and do something you don't know how to.

awesome! thanks so much for these great ideas for things to add to my medic bag... i will be researching how to use the cayenne and i did not know about the manuka honey... i've got a jar of that stuff right now... next time i meet someone with a possible skin fungus, i will be sure to let them know about that manuka honey fix, obviously a great 1st action, however, all skin fungus problems should be addressed internally... processed/refined sugar ( not natural fruit sugar or honey sugar ) should be avoided right away and I recommend a quality probiotic... Dr. Ohira's seems to be held in high esteem by many, plus my own successful experience with chronic widespread skin fungus makes me feel confident recommending this probiotic ... perhaps keeping some of those in a medical bag would be a good idea too!

Hey Chris big fan love the vids so keep it up but i have to ask mainly for my curiosity but do you know how all that equipment works because personally i know a lot of people that carry it but cant use it and it is more worrying than anything and also ur not carrying that in the woods with you so you should make sure u have a CAT tourniquet and some bandages in your bag as well like the quickclot trauma pack.

Just a tip: Color code your zipper pulls with some paracord or something else. You might not be the one getting into the pouches and it's much easier to tell someone to open the red zippers than to try to explain where something is at. Additionally - If you're carrying sutures, do some practicing with them. suturing a human is not the place to learn. A couple of OPA/NPA's would be a good idea too.

We have them. I carry a size that will fit "most" people. just like the OPA they have different sizes and need to be measured to fit properly.

Don't discredit the plastic tweezers... They can definitely be used for wound care, ie. manipulating saline-solution-soaked gauze to clean out a wound (provided they can pinch hold the gauze relatively well)

That's a bad ass bag. Nice med bag n kit. Celox please use it last resort. You have to cut n dig to the artery or vein and apply it to the end of the vein. If not stroke, death will follow. That is why people don't put them in their kits anymore. But celox is better than quick clot you are right.

Tea Tree Oil for minor cuts - stuff kills even MRSA. It should be more stable over a longer period of time and wider variance in temperature and cheaper because it's highly concentrated.

I saw Chris having an exchange towards the bottom of this talking about NPAs.( NASOPHARYNGEAL Airway or the Nose Trumpet as it has been called basically a Tube inserted through the nose to keep a patients airway open. It is a popular choice for a patient that has intact gag reflex) The army has deemed to issue the size 28F (28 French) with all of their Combat LifeSaver Kits. Point of Interest: I was checking and the Army now lists their NPA of choice as a 9mm inner diameter and 12mm outer diameter so I thought I would mention that. I figured if their research decided that the 28F was the size to fit the average soldier, that was good enough for me to carry in my kits.

Not a bad video, l don't know what your level of first aide training is or if you have any training at all. But, there has been some problems using hemostatic powders and granules causing strokes post the stopping of the bleeding. And what you should use is a hemostatic gauze instead. Next, you should never put any kind of cream or ointment on a burn.

I'd say the higher numbers are more powerful, just harder to get your hands on. READ the labeling. Some makers throw numbers out there that SOUND like #+ UMF, but it isn't.

Just curious...do you own body armor? It could save you from having to resort to using a trauma kit in the first place. ar500armor has some new level 3a inserts that are lightweight. They also sell various medical trauma kits that are already put together.
