RUMINATIONS: I seem to have a regular problem with labelling stuff as PSA Hell, and this is one particular case. I do actually like the idea behind this - using a fictionalized event like a zombie apocalypse to demonstrate useful survival skills in actual, real-life situations. Mind you, the problem with it is that a flood is still different from a zombie apocalypse enough that it feels like it’s neglecting safety tips that could actually be useful for that particular event, but there you go.

Go ahead Linkara, go to Wal-Mart. People will be raiding the aisles, trampling all over each other; fighting to go get food, and I'll go to a second hand store. There's plenty of them around, most of them have unused swords, bow arrows and crossbows, have tools and stuff to make armor, if you know what you are doing; and some of them even have snacks and drinks to hold you off until things clear up to go out and get supplies. It's unorthodox and unexpected, but that is why it will work.

This comic is a neat but flawed concept. After all storing water and a radio is good advice whether you're preparing for hurricanes, earthquakes, zombies, or Martians. BUT even here in the gun lovin' US of A, you can't exactly have a government endorsed book of safety tips say "have a plan to kill your friends and neighbors if they ever turn on you." Zombie apocalypse is pretty much the ONLY scenario where that's good advice. Hell even if we were invaded by another country/planet I think the military would rather civilians stay out of their way instead of running around shooting anything that looks threatening.

If there are no games or activities for kids (and adults) during a disaster, the boredom will add to the psychological trauma and may cause you to lose it and go insane. I know this because I've seen that game 60 seconds, where if the characters get too bored they'll start to fight and argue a lot, the kids will run away, or the adults lose it and start talking to sock puppets.

BTW your Walmart idea is good, but it has the same flaw as every other "head to the store" plan I've heard: All the people who had the exact same idea. You talk about forming a "posse" and "assuming control" of the Walmart, but the employees and other shoppers/looters may just see you as armed thugs trying to take their loot. I don't buy into the Walking Dead or the Joker's philosophy that "when society collapses its every man for himself". Lots of real world disasters have resulted in people coming together to HELP each other and make NEW societies. BUT at the same time any Black Friday shows you how possessive and violent shoppers can get when its NOT the End Of The World.

My biggest problem with zombie stories is that we always wait until there's a friggin' horde of them, with somewhere between a 1:1 and 20:1 ratio against regular humans. Pretty sure that every public mode of transportation would be shut down after the first outbreak, particularly if it's transmitted by fluid (i.e.: biting) and not airborne. The biggest threat to humanity in zombie stories aren't the zombies, raiders or even corrupt governments/corporations, it's the idiot doctors who look at the infected and say "nothing to see here". Also, my robot apocalypse plan is actually quite simple: hope they're accepting applications for cyborg enhancements.

+KingBronzeL I still think its one of the more realistic scenarios (well, as realistic as something fictional like zombies can be anyway). Like Linkara said those movies always show the apocalypse happening instantly with no time for the military/authorities to act. Even if some people in charge screwed up they'd probably be able to contain it before it got to world ending levels.

A much more likely type of stupidity would be people claiming the zombie outbreak isn't happening or isn't a big deal and encouraging people to do nothing about the zombies because the CDC's precautions are supposedly a violation of our liberties or part of an evil conspiracy.

Ok, so, there's a couple major problems with your analysis here: First: Hygiene products ARE important. A single person can stew in their own funk for a long time without it becoming more than an irritation, but if you have multiple people in a confined area hygiene quickly becomes a serious health concern. It's a disease vector. You've been to cons. You're familiar with con crud. Second: Entertainment isn't just about staving off boredom. It's about controlling stress. High stress levels have direct medical consequences, and increase aggression and violence. Things get worse when you have to factor in public shelters.

I find it hilarious and sad that Night of the Living Dead is pretty much the only zombie movie where people think of how to deal with the zombies and there are governmental officials cleaning things up. It is the first of the modern one and the rest are dumbed down for shock value.

I can't help but find the point about weapons interesting. The CDC's response makes perfect sense they're a health organisation but it also makes sense to have something to protect yourself with in f you find yourself in a world with flesh eating undead.

My go-to weapon in the event of a zombie apocalypse is a shovel. They can be both blunt and edged weapons, they have long reach (generally speaking, of course), they are plentiful, and if the head break off or falls of you still have a stick to beat zombies with until you can replace or repair it. Also, I'm really glad that the list at the end of the comic includes plastic sheets and duck tape. Since, someone with medical experience, or is at least first aid certified, can temporarily patch up a sucking chest wound with those objects and keep the victim's lung from collapsing until they can get proper medical attention.

Walking Dead has the zombies smell the difference between humans and their own kind, Highschool of the Dead used the sound of even, perfect footsteps as opposed to a shamble, and I think Day of the Dead (the 1985 one) just used basic sight to tell them apart. Don't quote me on that last one though, because I was in highschool when I saw DotD, and that was nearly a decade ago.

During season 2, a young woman named Jane teaches it to the new cast, and you see it at the end of season 1 when Lee coats Clem in entrails to walk through an infected hoarde. Clementine coats herself and a baby in zombie bits and walks through a hoard with zero problem too.

A lot of studies into Zombies show that, if they're the living corpses type, they'll decay after a few months. If they're rage zombies, they still obey the laws of thermodynamics, basically meaning they require energy, meaning a week without food will cause them to stop functioning. All you need is shelter, some chips, a case of aquafina & the first few seasons of AT4W downloaded on your phone & tbe problem WILL just go away.

I, personally, think that, even coming from the assumption zombies would somehow come into being, a zombie apocalypse would simply never happen( And in fact, due to that, I tend to find zombie movies in general to be the most overrated thing ever. ) Why? Well, you see, if we are talking about your stereotypical movie zombie, at some point, there has to be a patient zero... And... A individual zombie would be extremely easy to find and kill. I mean, they arent able to use any weapons, nor to come up with any strategy more complex then "I will walk up to that guy and eat him", and they arent stronger or faster then common humans: Heck, due to the necrosis in their muscles, one would expect then to become WEAKER then common humans over time. When you think about it, humans have every possible advantage stacked up against zombies. And, even if we are to assume that somehow, dont ask me how, a horde of a few thousand zombies got to actually form: A single wartank could crush thousands, possibly millons of zombies, and the only thing it would need to worry about would be running out of fuel. BEFORE any zombie lovers come here to hate me, I must clarify that I dont hate zombie stories: In fact, I have a strong respect for zombie stories that try to actually break the mold of stereotypical movie zombies, or explain how come the zombie apocalypse actually managed to... Ya know, happen( And this is why I actually enjoy Resident Evil ). But the majority of zombie apocalypse stories DOESNT, or gives a explanation that is complete bullshit and would involve everyone making the dumbest decisions posssible. ... And I am really confused by how most people not only dont notice these little plotholes, but take zombie stories dead seriously, to the point where I met people who actually think a zombie apocalypse is very much possible. Well, the thing is, tanks not only have a massive amount of firepower, but they have a massive amount of RESISTANCE: They are designed with the specific purpose of being so heavily armored you could unload a AK 47 on it, and not even scratch it. There-ARE-, obviously, many ways to deal with tanks, ranging from just using weapons specifically to destroy these vehicles, to try to lure it to somewhere where it would be stuck and unable to maneuver... Buuuut all of then would imply on actually using weaponry or strategy, two things that zed are, pretty much by definition, unable to actually do. So, yeah, I cant see how would a "normal" zombie damage a tank. A altered or supernatural zombie, maybe, depending on how powerfull it is, but not a average, movie zombie. Also, I have to point out I think that the "our weapons were not designed to attack the brain specifically" argument is also rather stupid. First of all: ... Yeah, they arent designed to damage the brain, specifically, but they can and will still damage the brain if they hit it. A very small amount of people would survive getting shot in the brain. It is just that they can kill you even if they dont actually hit your brain. Secound of all, even if we are to give a discount and assume that tanks and siege weapons are not designed to be precise enough to target a specific bodypart( Which they indeed arent ), there is only so much trauma the human body can take and still be able to do much of anything. Do you expect me to believe a zombie would die upon getting shot in the brain, but could still somehow be able to move after its arms and legs had been pulverized? Aaaaaand third of all... When you think about it, scientifically speaking, zombies being only possible to kill by shooting the brain is kind of bullshit. ... We kind of have all these fancy orgains for a reason: There is no real reason a zombie should die when its brain is destroyed, but be able to move around without its heart just fine, especially considering how the heart exists to pump bloods, which are filled with nutrients, which our cells use to produce energy, which is used to... Ya know, move?

Dado Bojart Those are reasons that I believe pretty much EVERY zombie apocalypse has to be supernatural in some form, even if the characters don't realize it is. Even the SCP Foundation's zombie virus (technically a prion, SCP-008) is probably supernatural or warps reality in some way to do what it does. Considering it's the SCP Foundation, they wouldn't be containing it if it didn't violate the laws of at least one field of science, after all, because if it doesn't break the laws of science, then there's NO REASON to contain it, since the Foundation's entire mission is to preserve normalcy, and to prevent people from knowing that there are things out there that can just casually break reality like that.

Don't forget napalm bombing. Zombies tend to congregate in swarms in the open and aren't particulary fond of self-preservation so they are a good target for air strikes.They are made of normal human flesh so I don't see why they wouldn't just burn,even if they're demons using the bodies. The zombie tropes usually imply that they only take interest in living organic things.Given that why don't use remote controled robots with flamethrowers in a plain open field? They don't have many more tactics than direct attack cramming together and trying to swarm. Which is a horrible strategy when dealing with flaming oil that just keep burning.

if you would like like a good story for how the zombie pluge came to be then might i recomend world war Z (not the movie but the book) you had a small area where there were infected. some smuggles thmselfs away while other knowingly or unknowingly sold infected organs for money, so the virus was spread. the goverment goofed by selling a placebo instead of aual medichine and just sent in soilders in blindly. they didnt think zombie so soilders aims for the chest and the zombied stayed down till something passed. sound atracted more. soon comunication was braking down do to the stress and people panicking. Add in some selfish bastered thinking short term not long term and the system caves in. Now there are to many to shoot and no good way to track them. people gathered to much into big groups and atracked large groups. and one of the final nails in the coffin idoats just relased prisoneirs into the wild thinking they die instead of making sure their dead.

Our Business Contingency Plan does include scenarios for floods, earthquakes, animal rights protests and zombies (2 of those are serious, the other 2 are just for practice)

I have my plan for a Zombie Apocalypses. Short term: Head to the nearest Home Depot, Lowes, or hardware store and lock it up from the inside and begin building anything I need such as garden beds, weapons (mostly melee)and arrows, furniture, melt all the metal items into bars for later use for possible bullets or swords and the like. Begin planting seeds to give them time to grow and hunt. Begin preserving items that I grow. Raise small live stock within the confides of the area I'm in. Plus there are cleaning supplies, vermin control, and more that will be useful. Long term: commandeer a cruise ship and begin retrofitting it to a floating castle. Several floors for housing, most of the top floors for growing crops and small livestock, Get/make Solar panels or alternative means to create energy to power electronics. Plus if anyone is infected, there's a nice incinerator in the ship to burn them to ashes. The other option is to just toss them overboard and let the sharks have them. Hopefully, by Walking Dead and other Zombie Movies standards, the Animals won't get infected if they eat the zombified flesh. Have a blacksmith shop on the ship making swords, maces, chains, etc and a gun range for training and recreation. The bullets that have been spent will be refurbished into new ammo. Most importantly, if anyone that is deemed useless or douchey, they have the best job of all..........Live Bait!! Because if you can't contribute, you will be zombie chow. I'd also have a quarantine process for anyone asking for shelter. If you're bit, scratched, lost a limb, whatever, you will be quarantined for a few days hopefully you won't turn into a zombie by then. Otherwise, you can leave and turn or be shot after you have turned or in the case of the cruise ship, INCINERATED!!! That's my basic idea. There are more details that I can make such as security but you can get the gist of it. All I can say is, BRING ON THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!! I see it as a way for that planet to get a fresh start and not be over crowded.

HI LINKARA!!!! In the first section you said "Walmart has entertainment to while away the hours." How many times have you seen or had a story in it where children walk away because they are bored and then get into danger/trouble. Bring the toys for the kids or make sure they are involved with the group of adults. Also, as my fellow commenters have said, HYGIEN!!! Weapons to recommend for Zombie Apocalypse- shields and melee weapons. Make sure to cover your face and clothing. Dispose of the clothing. Bio-agents can infect the entire colony easily if not.

Plans for a robot/AI apocalypse: 1) You go to your living room, and sit on something comfort; for example, your couch can be pretty comfortable. However, you can try your bed, too. Ya know what? Relax where ever the hell you want. 2) Next, wait for the robots to tap into our nuclear weapons because that's probably the greatest weapon against us. Survival tip: Avoid people during the first 24-72 houres of the outbreak. In the chaos of the first houres you can get distracted and infected easily. Get out of the city, by foot if nececary. Any other person during these first houres of the outbreak is a liability. Two people is the maximum. Then, once things are settled down,you go back to town and proceed with your prefered survival strategy.

there is actually a critical flaw in the concept of a zombie plague, assuming these are dead reanimated corpses not just violent sick people. If a zombie is dead entirely and is just the remaining flesh being animated by the remaining bits of the brain that are functioning ie the motor centers then there is a serious problem motor control don't mean that the autonomic functions of the boy are also working. specifically the HEART, the blood in your body carries every thing you body needs to stay active to every other part of the body, i won't list it all its a lot. If your heart isn't working but for some reason your muscles are then they aren't getting energy from where your body stores it. zombies wouldn't be able to use the flesh they eat because their stomachs aren't digesting food and even if it did it wouldn't move because your blood isn't flowing. With out that your body would enter starvation mode, which is what happens normally when you don't have any food, its got a technical term for it but starvation mode is simpler. Your muscles in order to move will start using its own cells as full, consuming its own tissue to power itself normally it would take a long time for this to set in but with the heart not working this would start Immediately because the stored fats in the body can't be accessed by the body without the heart pumping to move them -the zombies will burn through the bodies supply of energy within a much shorter period depending on how active they are. If you want to fight the zombies with low risk its really very very simple make them go towards something they can't possibly reach. Putting something on a high poll that makes noise, if their the blind walk toward sound type but either way zombies have a shelf life depending on how much meat is on their bones, if they don't then a regular shot in the chest would kill them. All in all its probably the smartest course of action is to make the zombies burn themselves out first then kill them with ranged or at least poll arm weapons. The more dangerous zombies will always be fresher ones older zombies will be less dangerous because their strength will be diminishing as the muscles consume themselves to the point they can't move. An average human should be able to push them easily the only issue is if there are a lot of them and you get mobbed but even then unless you go somewhere you can't run your going to be faster then them. Anyone who is good at long distance jogging could easily not only keep ahead of the zombies but wear them down

my plan would be to hold up in a pet store, plenty to eat (in both pet food and small animals), with sand bags of litter for barricade materiel, and not likely to be raided by other survivors. or a livestock feed store, lots of food, building materials, weapons, and depending on the time of year it might even have live chickens...
