something you might think about. when you zip the bags you're trapping air inside the bag however minute it might be but it will make a difference. you might be able to achieve your goal better if you were to zip the bag 3/4 of the way and leave a little gap. that way you contain the powder and are able to remove the remaining air from the bag. you can also use a paper towel as sort of an air filter if you put it in on top of your bags. just my experiences take them or leave them.

that's a great point to note, which is exactly why I do a pin prick in the bags.

A little tip for resealing the jars in a power-out situation: Ziplock has vac bags with a port, and the starter kit comes with a hand pump. It seats perfectly over the jar sealer attachment's port, and 7-10 pumps seals a quart jar tight. I found a couple of the pumps at thrift stores for a quarter each. ;)

Gently educate; make sure you're not dictating to others. Help them to come around to your way of understanding by educating them. A little bit of honey goes a long way in getting others on board. I can't even begin to tell you about all of the e-mails I've received from folks telling me that they are finally starting to get prepared because of the way I present things. You can't make it about gloom and doom and expect people to come on board with you.

Thanks...great information. I have had an "experiment" going now for almost 5 years now. I sealed brown sugar into jars and have been opening one every 6 months or so. So far...perfect results. The brown sugar is as soft and perfect as the day I sealed it. I didn't do anything special, just sugar and the Foodsaver. Love this method of preserving.♥

Kellene- Aren't you worried about the air that you trapped inside the zip-top bags when you closed them? I realized you squished out as much air as you could, but there's still some in there, trapped around the crumbs. Would it have been better to just fold over the bags, leaving them open so that the vacuum would suck the air out of the bags as well? Just a thought. Love all your ideas anyway!!!

The creator of the Tattler lid told me this personally. He's a good man and is passionate about what he does. Feel free to call the Tattler company and speak to them about this. They may have some simple little suggestions for you. But I know they won't steer you wrong. Personally, I save my Tattler lids for my "real" canning and use the cheap ones for the FoodSaver canning. If u can't get them to work for u (which I suspect you will be able to just fine) You'll just have to sell them to me.:-)

TIP: instead of using plastic bags for the Panako bread crumbs, place the Panko directly into the canning jar & on the top place a coffee filter. The coffee filter will prevent any of the small particles from the bread crumbs getting out of the jar while it is being vacuum sealed.

If these were zip-loc bags, you'd be correct, however, since this is done via Foodsaver machines which specifically expel the oxygen, then it's fine. However, no one should ever believe that ANY plastic is oxygen proof as plastic allows for oxygen exchange to still happen.

Hi Shell, If you're doing dry canning or water bath, then you need to sterilize the jars and lids. Pressure canning though, you can just wash them sufficient to clean them as they are under a great deal of heat and pressure as to sanitize themselves during the pressure canning process. Good luck.

@PreparednessPro
@PreparednessPro 9 жыл бұрын
You're extracting all notable oxygen with the FoodSaver so you don't really need to worry about any miniscule amount of oxygen that may still be in your bags. Plastic STILL allows for oxygen release, so as you're sucking the oxygen out, the oxygen in the bags is coming out too. Just give it a little help by pressing out as much oxygen out of the bag before putting it in the jar.

I know this video is ages old but just curious if you are still doing this? I want to get into canning and especially dry canning for flour, rice, pasta, etc. Love the idea of sealing powdery products (flour, sugar, etc.) into baggies within the jar. Amazed the FoodSaver is able to get the oxygen out of them even if they are in a sealed bag. Also wonder if you've ever used an oxygen absorber packet in the jar when you can using this method?

Im curious why you put them in bags before you put them in jars? reason being I would think a certain amount of air would get trapped in the bags (maybe) but you are going to reseal after each use anyway, why not just open, use what you need and then reseal?
@LiberLady
@LiberLady 9 жыл бұрын
if you put powdered items such as flour in a jar without putting it in the zip bags first, when the Food Saver is pumping out the oxygen, the powdered items can come out and get under the lid and up into the suction tube, and eventually damaging the motor of the Food Saver. I'm surprised PP didn't mention this reason -- (short answer to preserve the life of the food saver pump, prevent contamination of the suction tube, and to avoid getting the powder between the jar rim and the rubber of the lid preventing a good seal.)
@OKRMetric
@OKRMetric 9 жыл бұрын
Ann Agent I get what you are saying but it actually defeats the purpose. any air that is in the bags will stay in it so it wouldn't make any difference what the air situation outside a sealed bag. It could just as well be sitting on a counter.

+thril switch I know you wrote this months ago. No disrespect meant but if anyone is going to vacuum seal rice and beans and not eat them for 20-30 years then it's stupid for them to buy them in the first place. And the reason you're having trouble finding the answer to your question is because storing beans and rice for that length of time is not a common practice.

Date: 06/17/2016. Review-Sometime back I purchased a FoodSaver 3230 and although it did last awhile, it was not as long as I felt it should of lasted because I only used it on projects and not all the time. It started smoking and would not seal, so I decided that I would purchase another Foodsaver Vacuum Sealer since I was in a bind and that is what they had in stock at WM. When I got the new one Oct. 2015, I felt like something was wrong but completed the project I was doing and went on to all the pressing things I had going in my life. Off and on I would use it for little projects and mostly for vacuum sealing jars. I recently used it and I'm feed up. It quickly over heats when heat sealing. Went online to contact FoodSaver and had a heck of a time getting a hold of someone. I originally submitted an email on 06/03/16 which came back saying they would respond in 3 days. As of 06/15/16 absolutely no response from FoodSaver. After jumping thru hoops for them, I find out from them that the newer FoodSaver models overheat quicker. FoodSaver tells me if I want a black color replacement like I had, then I have to wait 6 to 8 weeks and then they won't send it to me, unless I call them back and then see if they happen to have any in stock. They refuse to go ahead and take the information and send me a black one when it come in which is no way for customer service to do. Tried of dealing with this worthless company so I took the White color. Watch out... after they told me I would get a New replacement and I mailed it back in, they tried to say that I was going to get a re-furbished one, but I put a stop to that. I wanted to alert every one... you don't want to spend $90 on this piece of junk and a company like this.

Thank you for the info. I have heard that oxygen absorbors turn sugar into a rock hard lump. Would oxygen absorbors affect chocolate chips? Would using oxygen absorbors in addition to vacuum sealing chocolate chips be over doing it?

Kellene, I was wondering if I just wanted a food saver to do canning jars could I use the Meal saver?? I has a hose, thanks Kathy

The Meal Savers aren't intended for that purpose and they don't hold the seal. It took me about 2 hours on hold with their company to finally get that answer. :-)

There will be air inside those bags... They should be open so the vacuum would work better.

when using tattler lids do you heat the rings before using food saver?
@PreparednessPro

+Eye on art You know, I don't use the Tattler lids for my dry canning nowadays. I use the regular ones and save my Tattler lids for pressure canning instead.

I wouldn't store food in plastic bags for long term storage. Just put it in the jar directly and put a cupcake liner on top to keep from getting fine dust into your machine. Or a piece of wax paper. But don't store food in plastic!

Plastic is not impervious to oxygen, you're correct. However, it does help to manage the ingredients better for use.

seriously? You are wasting electricity using the vacuum sealer if your food is in plastic bags inside the jars. There is still air in the bags. Try using a coffee filter on top of the product to keep the powdered product from being sucked into the tube. Use pint or even half pint jars if you want the product in serving sizes.

I had seen a woman claim that dried beans and rice, etc., had to be heated in the oven and then sealed in order to kill off any larva or bugs. I am concerned because I found this information after I had put up about six half gallon jars of dried beans. What is your take on this?
@PreparednessPro
@PreparednessPro 6 жыл бұрын
Last I checked, bugs need oxygen too. :-)

If you don’t close those bags the machine will suck the air out of the bags
@PreparednessPro
@PreparednessPro 3 жыл бұрын
I close them and then just prick them with a pin for added protection.

I really like this method,but I was wondering why you don't use an oxygen absorber?
@PreparednessPro
@PreparednessPro 10 жыл бұрын
They are extremely unreliable and don't block the oxygen anywhere near as well as this method does. ;-)
@BasicPoke

All the oxygen in the bags will remain with this method, so I think an absorber would be a great idea.
@PreparednessPro
@PreparednessPro 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, the oxygen does not remain. Plus I usually do a pin prick too. The purpose of the bags isn't for preservation purposes. It's to prevent stuff from getting into my FoodSaver and to better handle the food properly for use. Sometimes I premeasure that amount I want to use so that all I have to do is grab a bag.
